  • This app is expensive because software development is expensive. A team of say 3 devs, 1 designer and one PO with salaries on the low end would need between 20-30 thousand USD per month of development. It took a few months so we're looking at costs of almost 100k.

The reason you see 0.99 apps is because:

    • there are devs developing them in their spare time
    • there are teams paid with VC money, effectively burning money with no profit
    • the companies are swallowing the loss because they think they will get other benefits (brand image, product sales, etc)
    • the company has invested money and is hoping to make up for the low price in volume.

So yes, apps are actually very expensive, especially if one has to make a living from them. Here's a detailed acount from an indie developer: http://blog.jaredsinclair.com/post/93118460565/a-candid-look-at-unreads-first-year

  • hey guys ive just posted a video, its still processing so wont be available just yet but hopefully soon

  • question about the loop slicer, you can have slices with independent tempos is that right?

  • yeah, I was wondering about the Time Slice feature. Sounds like it utilizes timestretch of some kind since it sounds like sliced loops will keep in sync with tempo changes. I wonder if the timestretch works in realtime?

  • Well my video finally uploaded but I just saw that Doug has one so mine is now pretty redundant lol

  • I have a few questions for anyone who owns Bilbao:

    • is there a length limit on the sample length (I am thinking to use it to add vocal lines for example)

    • would it be possible to set up a kit with the same sample tuned to different pitches, so you can have a psuedo keyboard sampler (which I was hoping for but they didn't include in this update).

    • can you sample directly into it, or do you always need to sample elsewhere and then import?

  • edited September 2014

Hi i just bought bilbao for the exact same reasons. Sample length is very limited.... ( 5 seconds ) Not nearly enough to make vocal hooks, melody lines etc. Also, yes you have to use audiobus for monitoring while you record.
Can someone tell me if the length limitations are the same in abu dhabi?

    Cheers

  • Abu seems to cut off the imported samples at 10 seconds. I can see the reasoning behind it, samples will quickly fill up the little RAM we have available (and make the whole thing unstable), still a bit too low limit though IMO. But I really hope Korg ups the limit here as iPads with more RAM becomes available.

No time stretch, it analyzes the transients and slices the audio (which ends up sounding way better when altering the tempo a lot, since the audio stays untouched/un-stretched).

  • @PhilW

    1. Yes, there is a 5 second maximum, judging from the length parameter going from 0 to 5000ms, playing with a bass loop I imported it seems to chop samples to 5s that are longer.

    2. Yes you can, the pitch control runs from -2400 to 2400, it seems that the first two digits represent semitones and the last two cents. As this is controlled via a rotary knob over such a wide range precise setting is fiddly. Also, using the same bass loop, as there is no time stretching (that I have found) when I pitch the loop up an octave it reduces in length accordingly. I plan to make my own samples from other sources, so multi sampling pitch ranges outside of gadget would get over this.

    3. There is an option to import via AudioCopy sampling, but I haven't played around with that yet. But as AudioCopy samples from mic or line in, you can't sample direct from other apps, like you can with iMPC pro through IAA, for example.

I must add though, that despite these seeming limitations, both the new gadgets add value to the overall package. Personally, preparing my own sample library using other apps is just part of the fun with iOS and being able to prepare sequences in iMS20 and iPoly6, create cool patches from a range of synths and process them with effects and then bring it all together with the rest of the gadgets and take advantage of the workflow in gadget for arranging full tracks makes a solid update. Add in that we can now export individual tracks or use external effects to process the master bus, run a number of these types of apps (impc, the other korgs etc) in sync inside a daw and the options are quite staggering.

I only got the ipad a couple of months ago and the idea was just to use it as a sketch pad away fom the studio. I have hardly been in there since I got this lot, I was not expecting to be able to do as much as we can with iOS.

  • @Xen. Thanks so much for the comprehensive replies.

  • Yup, thanks.

  • When Gadget first came out, there was talk of a road map going forward. Will there be audio tracks in the future? Can anyone tell me what the road map is. I like Gadget now, but I have tons of synths (not the only one, eh?). Seems like it could be almost a one-stop solution for ios music making with the right add ons in the future.

  • How much space does Gadget take up now with the new gadgets added in (apart from samples added by user) ? iTunes listings aren't always accurate on that it seems.

  • @raz I broadly agree with your argument about pricing. In my personal case it makes no sense to purchase gadgets with limited functionality although I would have been a fool to think Korg would add a fully featured sampler to their collection. To be honest I haven't used gadget as much as expected hence my decision not to buy the add ons. I would definitely consider it however, if it was down my alley. I shall wait and give the little money I have to developers who feed my creativity with apps like samplr, Impaktor or turnado. I'd easily pay 3times as much for them if not more. I've spent enough cash on music apps to sit guilt-free in my easy chair while waiting for another gem to drop.

  • does gadget have a swing function, does it have individual swing per gadget, and is it possible to disable the swing altogether?

  • No swing. It does have triplet grids as well as normal, and you can have one track playing normal and one with triplets, but there is no specific swing parameter.

  • edited September 2014

It does have global swing (along with the triplets per pattern), press the tempo button under the mixer to bring it up.

  • thanks Chris and Phil…., I'm having a diff time on this one, I keep deciding not to get it right now, but then have second thoughts… I believe if the abu slicer only had good quality realtime stretching I would probably not be able to resist, but without the time stretching and in light of the editing limitations +sample time limits it's difficult to pull off. brrrr brrrrrrrr

    @kobomato

Not withstanding what I posted above, these IAPs are not essential and I'm sure they will be on price drop soon enough. At which time I will bemoan my haste as I see another app-bargin slip by.

The update to landscape, MIDI, AB and IAA, export individual tracks, Ableton compatability etc are all solid advances that improve workflow and increase options when you view them in the context of finding new ways to take advantage of all the possibilities the audio app market provides.

I've always intended to spend time prepping samples on the ipad, so these Gadgets fit the bill for me right now, but if you want more features and the current price isn't attractive then being patient is sensible.

+1 @xen Very good contributions which will benefit those with their fingers on the trigger, but were also helpful to anyone like me who has already emptied their chamber and is now, somewhat bemused, surveying the field :) Thanks.

  • @kobamoto I think the core app sounds great on its own and it seems like a productive environment - enough options to meet most creative needs, but not so many that you drown in them and never get around to creating any actual music. And some of the gadgets are unique, such as Kiev. Well worth getting while on sale (IMHO).

  • @kobamoto said:

Everything is relative. $10 doesn't mean the same thing to all people.

Exactly. I don't consider $10 to be "peanuts" and I certainly don't consider Gadget "dirt cheap." I took the plunge on it a few months ago because of the glowing reviews and the fact that it seemed like the most fully-featured iOS music app. I don't regret buying it, but I will never consider a $30 app cheap.

    @kobamoto said:

I'm still interested but I will wait for it all to go on sale below $20 to try it out, cause for me $50 is too much to get those samplers comparing the Bilbao to impc pro and Abu to Samplr.

That's basically where I'm at. I don't doubt the new gadgets could be really useful, but $10 per is, for me, way too much. Make them a couple of bucks and I'll consider them, but they'd have to be game-changing to drop $20 in addition to what I've already spent.

  • Posted int he other thread, but there's some Gadget thread diversity going on... ANyone with Abu Dhabi know..

If you import exact loops, do they map to the song tempo 16 slice points?

i.e. can I import 2 files, 100 bpm and 120 bpm and each will map to the full length of the 16 slices whatever the tempo of the song? Or does it just import the file as is and it displays 16 slices worth at song tempo regardless of whether the file is faster or slower?

The example in the vid from from Buska seemed to truncate a whole bunch of silence from the end of the audioshare file.. so I'm not holding out much hope.

  • @serosin

Go to iPad settings and find Gadget in the apps list. You can change other stuff there as well like latency and switching the knobs from linear to circular.

  • edited September 2014

    @serosin said:

Is it just me and my inability to locate it, or is Background Audio not yet available?

Some settings are located in the iPad settings, under Gadget. You can enable/disable background audio there. Latency/responsiveness and few other things as well.

    Edit: What xen said! :)

  • I think Korg has priced the new Gadgets fairly. We get major, useful new features as part of a free upgrade and major, useful new instruments as OPTIONAL IAPs. Its a win/win IMHO. I have adopted a behavior of not spending money on the crappy $1 and $2 apps. and save it for quality apps. such as Gadget, Z3TA+, etc.

  • Can someone confirm that it's not possible to drag folders of samples into Gadget through iTunes? It appears that I can only drag individual sample files, which would mean that I would have a giant list of samples to browse through, rather than having them organized into folders in Gadget. Please tell me I'm wrong. PLEASE.

  • edited September 2014

Can't even create a zip archive, load it through iTunes, then open it in Gadget and have a folder for samples.

I make it a point to never ever curse on the internet but fucking hell. wow. :(

    edit: maybe iFunbox will help.
