You are correct, sir!
Tbh the velocity keys themselves are very responsive and show a digital readout of their velocity in 1-127, if that helps at all. Also there is some on screen menu editing. Not deep like the Arturia software but it’s there
(Lol And I thought the same thing. Maybe their name brand suggest they don’t hire teens for QC)
Well. My buddy just got his today and it won’t turn on… Go figure. T.E. Strikes again… as I said before this company is lame.
😂
The KO II, or the OP-1 Field? Bro, say what you want about TE, but I plan to follow through with getting my OP-1 Field this coming Sunday. I mean for f--ksake, I've been watching some videos about the OP-1 and OP-1 Field on Youtube, and I see no downsides to the limited workflow that can cause happy accidents.
@Hainbach made such a compelling case for the OP-1 and OP-1 Field in that video late last year, and after so many f--king years of trying to suppress the GAS for the og OP-1 and then the Field, I just can't anymore.
Besides, the Op-1 Field has a headphone jack, lol!
Yes, the Op1z is arguably (and I say that carefully around here) the “best” of its kind, perhaps the only real machine of its kind . TE rules man, and I feel same as Jim ^
Nothing limiting about it; in fact it’s a plus
I will say, TE has had some QA issues, but my experience has been fine. I mean my pocket operators still work and I’ve had them for years. And my OP1 was rock solid. Sure there are some bad ones out there but it’s definitely the minority I would say.
I love my op-1 field, yes even though the battery is loose. Everytime I turn it on beautiful sounds come out of it. For me it’s the best thing in the world for Ambient. I could sell all my other gear and euro rack and just keep the OP one field and I would be happy. I’m sure you’re going to love it.
BUT. T.E. Should NOT get a pass for all the broken stuff they put out. More people need to put up a stink about it and be very aggressive towards them, otherwise they’re just going to keep on doing it. Would you guys be ok going into a restaurant and having shitty food put on your table? Would you want to pay the bill?
Yes! Can't wait to build Ambient in it for sure.
Okay you make a fair point. Have you contacted TE to air your grievances?
Oops, I forgot to reply to you mate. Well said.
Yep
Good. Make sure to stay on them mate if they refuse to utilise good quality control.
I just read some adoring reviews of that new mic and recorder (not actually released yet?). Beautiful pieces of kit, both, I'd certainly like to have them, but my god those are really high prices.
…
Was initially proud of myself for resisting the KO2 hype but they had plenty in stock at GC. Left having to have em and Moog Grandma.
Having a blast with them so far. KO2 is mos def a winner if you can get one that isn’t DOA. Good materials and feel for the price. Excellent sound and impressive factory sounds. All usable. Clearly poor assembly (evidenced by wide spread faults), QA and down right gross packaging. This flimsy box is disrespectful to the GOAT (Ali) and not even suitable for a cheap box of chocolates.
That aside, happy with the purchase but likely wouldn’t shop TE again.
My rule: Never buy anything just because Hainbach makes it sound good. It always sounds like shit when I get my hands on it.
LOL! Oh believe me , it isn't just Hainbach who caused me OP-1 GAS. It all started with seeing Jeremy's "Aquamarine" when it popped up into my feed back in Summer 2018.
The video was a couple months old when I first saw it. My jaw dropped to the floor, and I wondered what that amazing magical device was. Of course the price (even back then) was rather prohibitive. Still is somewhat, but I work two jobs now and should be able to afford a monthly payment of upwards to $200 and still live comfortably enough. Just means shopping at Aldi a lot more often and eating out less and being wise with money management.
Anyways, I'm at that stage in my creative life where I rarely have GAS anymore and can basically produce serviceable-enough music in any workflow and workstation I find myself utilising (except in miRack standalone, LOL). But I'd say nearly five and a half years of GAS for the OP-1 (and now the OP-1 Field) is more than enough time for me to finally just go for it. "YOLO" and all that tosh.
Right, when learning a new workflow and learning to produce a "new to me" genre, I expect to churn out at least a few pieces of rubbish at first. The point isn't about creating the greatest mindblowing music imaginable. It's about playing and experimenting with something that is new and intriguing and having fun, and if one of those early "turds" accidentally turns into a diamond, I will polish it and post that online, lol.
Given what I've seen and learnt about the OP-1 Field and its interactivity with the iPad's USB-C port (thanks to various Youtube channels and our mate @Tarekith as well), I have a decent enough understanding of the workflow.
The OP-1 Field is basically two devices in one. The first device contains the "workstation" (synths and sampler and sequencers and effects). The second device is a 4-track tape recorder that can mimick studio tape, vintage tape, porta tape, and mini disk. It doesn't record MIDI within itself, only committing everything to audio. (Of course the OP-1 Field can be used as a MIDI controller and, if memory serves proper, can be controlled with MIDI as well).
So instead of building a track with a bunch of MIDI in a DAW, you build a track using audio like using aural lego blocks. It's a completely different workflow than what I'm used to, but I've done enough research to know what I'm getting into (as well as just viewing OP-1 and OP-1 Field vids as gear porn entertainment, lol).
Anyways, so once I get my OP-1 Field, I plan to build my first track using what I've seen and learned from various videos, commit it all to audio, record the output via USB-C into Logic Pro for iPad, and use LP4i's master assist to polish it up for me, lol.
And hopefully once I get my OP-1 Field, I can pester Tarekith my basic noob questions. 😈 (I know, he's like "oh joy".)
Just grabbed my unit from Guitar Center and everything is operational as designed. Hoping to have some videos posted in the next few days.
oh joy
Sounds like you know what you're getting into, so it won't take you long to get up to speed. I think the thing that throws people the most when they first get the OP-1 is how rudimentary the tape editing is, and how often you'll likely be doing it. No bar markers, tiny little visuals of your tape, the SLOW process of lifting and dropping large audio files, etc. Not saying it's bad, but it's definitely something that takes a bit to get comfortable with given how simple it is.
Once you learn to get everything in sync, and how to bounce it all down to free up tracks, it becomes a lot easier. Hoping to record an OP-1 Field first thoughts video this weekend if all goes well.
@echopera I'm super curious to hear some first hand information, videos would be appreciated. @Tarekith as usual I'm interested in your thoughts. I'm looking forward to all the videos.
What is it - 1962?
The Polyend Tracker Mini is the only thing to catch my eye, but I’m not familiar with a tracker.
That's a very good rule that applies not just to Hainbach but basically to any influencer. Anybody worth their salt can likely give ppl gas for anything if they put their mind to it
I'm with you there, that sounds tedious af to me. Some limits are good, creative tools, others are just a pain in the arse!
It very much feels like an old school tape machine experience using the OP-1, no doubt about that.
LOL! 😂
Sounds like a fun challenge to me. 😉 I mean, Stockhausen knew how to manipulate tape in a destructive workflow (this was physical analogue tape which he sliced with a razor and rearranged, not virtual tape in a portable workstation) and created some of the most prolific pieces of Experimental and Musique Concrete. It'd be fun to use an OP-1 Field like a virtual version of that I'd imagine.
Yes! Exactly.
That'd be super cool mate. Hope all goes well.
4-track machines weren't invented until 1963. 😏 Try again.
This is true, and I've learned to control my GAS for the most part. But even without Red Means Recording and Hainbach, I know I want the OP-1 Field for at least Ambient and Experimental purposes.
I've never handled a creative tape-based workflow despite briefly learning about these techniques in uni as part of discussing the history of Western music. I've always wanted to handle tape irl, but lacked the funds to get the equipment. Just because Hainbach has done it with physical tape doesn't mean I have to. 😉
The OP-1 Field seems to handle all of this virtually, rudimentary or otherwise. What some people
may consider a wretched pain, others may consider a fun challenge. It all depends on perspective, patience, willpower, potency of the weed, etc. 😏
Unfortunately none of the guitar centers near me have it in stock. Was hoping I could go in tomorrow and try and convince myself not to buy it lol looks like I’ll just be getting a midi controller 😆
I’d love to see this!
I didn't mention 4-track.
There were 3-track machines in studios in the late 1950s.
👍👍 we looking forward to that mr Echo!
