If we can’t afford Teenage Engineering products, we have to choose something else.

It is not about being able to afford it.

It is more about not wanting to buy from a company like this. $250 for a nylon backpack...?

    Now you’re silly…
There are a lot of companies out there selling merchandises bloody expensive, so, do you/we all boycott such companies also?

I'm not telling you what to do.

    But I don't buy from companies I don't like.

  • Well
    Call me a hype bitch
    Ordered mine
Might see it by January, and also bought a Novation circuit, whiskey and a new credit card has perhaps ruined Xmas for my kids, but I am sure they will understand ( one day )
Let’s hope I don’t break the fader when I add the knob

In other words @Simon , while buying from companies "you don't like" is your free choice, the reasoning is rather surface-level. You're upset because you don't like the fact they sell a backpack for $250? I mean I wouldn't waste that much money on a backpack, but I would spend it on a KO II.

The reason I don't buy a KO II right now is I'm aiming to buy an OP-1 Field to play around with. That's really the only reason. Down payment of $525 or something like that. Must save it first.

I'm not upset. I'm pretty happy this sunny Sunday morning.

It is the attitude the company displays that I don't like.

  • I’ve had really good service with them this year.
The tech department are on point, no complaints at all.
They’ve answered all of my queries and more.

I have MiRack already to play around with such a workflow. That said, the reason I want the Field is due to the unique, interesting workflow and its unapologetically digital sounds. Years of fun and more. ;)

  • My wife works at Cartier, so I’m not shocked by expensive goods, but I’m with @Simon on this. For me, the markup isn’t for the quality of the stuff. It’s like a designer brand now. Might as well be Supreme lol

But that’s just my personal decision. I’m not going to judge those who buy it and I’m sure it will be a fun little machine.

I think you're going to make some amazing music with that OP-1f.

Thanks mate. :) Well once I'm able to buy it, I'll just play around with it and make some noise. Just to get used to its workflow at first with whatever stock sounds and presets are within. Then I'll figure out what genres suit it best for me personally (although I have a sneaking suspicion that it'll lend itself flawlessly to Ambient with that new reverb).

I also have a sneaking suspicion it'll lend itself perfectly to Noise music as well as Musique Concrete.

Of course I'd be remiss if I weren't to attempt a Lofi beat in it as well. :)

  • It lends itself well to lo-fi, really well, as well as ambient, hip hop, dream pop, trip hop, experimental. It's inspiring, I find new interesting avenues to explore every time I turn it on.

Nice! Can't wait. :) Me and my OP-1 Field will have a blast once I can get one. :)

Well so far it's just one lone guy with the fader issue posting a video calling it fadergate. In another video he cautions that we shouldn't put the knob on the slider because that may be how he broke his slider, and he admits he pushed it on hard. So hopefully it's not actually a thing, we'll see pretty soon.

Not true unfortunately. There are more people in the Elektronauts forum. And two person had a dead fader right out of the box. As pretty as the limited Ali packaging is, it seems a bit on the light side, not protecting well.

I could only imagine the sh#t storm if it was a piece of Behringer gear. :D :D :D just a life observation btw.

The OP-1 is amazing for experimental music! I’m stoked to hear what you end up making with it! I’m not 100% sure if I’ll end up getting it or grabbing something else but I’m saving for it either way lol.

The Sampletrek and other SonicWare stuff also calls my name. Same regarding the Octatrack 🤩

  • GAS is inherently funny to me. Reading people’s comments which on the surface, appear to be part of a greater conversation with other members, when it’s actually internal dialog trying to justify the purchase to one’s self. I’ve definitely been guilty of this, so this comment isn’t a jab at anyone. It’s everywhere on all music forums. BTW, my OP-1 is still fully functional 👍

A CD player? Hope that's not it. 🤣

    PS1 player?

The bit on the bottom right hand side pulls out with a cord attached - the $500 portable field clothes line.

Quote of the month hahaha... Yeah man, I am glad that I generally have no gas for hardware but I've definitely been guilty of this in relation to posts / threads about apps

What do we call the nefarious GAS variant that causes intense cravings to build DIY controllers and instruments? I have no problem whatever passing up off the shelf hardware, but a few times a year can't help myself spending more than than a purchased controller, and a ridiculous number of hours building stuff I never end up using (if I finish the project at all).

I seem to have the long version of this syndrome, which is even worse than the original onset in that one loses interest about 90% of the way through every project.

I would be better off financially and practically if I contracted the GAS/TE variant.

  • @wim Me too. But it’s mostly daydreaming. I think about and research DIY stuff a whole lot. I try to imagine my ideal controller. I look at inspiration. And it’s been many many years without making a single decision towards creating something haha

Procrastination disguised as busy work. I don’t sound as skilled as you in the DIY department, but building templates and Drambo racks are my busy work to mostly avoid making actual finished music. I could be wrong though and you may have high creative output.

If you’re anything like me, resisting off the shelf hardware is easier because the expectation of good music is higher with the newest tech. My defense mechanism is to play it safe and be the under dog with the aspiration of an occasional wow from making something likable on an iPhone SE2.

  • Nailed it on both points @Blipsford_Baubie. You a psychologist or something? 😎

Dude! That's what I did around this time last year. After making my first Lofi EP, I made "Lounging in Another World" entirely on my iPhone SE2 in FLSM.

Now with my iPhone 14 Pro Max I'm pumping out a new EP in NS2. This iPhone is my music studio in my pocket. The fact that music studios once existed as rooms full of hardware connected to a central mixing desk now all in my pocket is pretty far out.

Perhaps I can wait a few more months before purchasing an OP-1 Field.

Yeah I’m in no rush on getting one either. I’m about to buy a new midi controller when I get paid this well (Akai MPK Plus) and that will get me exactly where I need to be. Knobs to fade in channels in AUM. Drum pads for triggering loops and finger drumming, and keys for the obvious lol. I haven’t had a midi controller in months since mine crapped out and I think that’s a big reason why I’ve been having GAS for hardware lately.

I’m gonna see how I feel when my controller gets here but I may end up just staying on iOS completely as I planned.

I've been doing some design stuff and that was a tester for sizes.
Ended up leaving it on the filter. 😉

On the open market customers vote with their wallets. If TE can get away with it, power to them but I’m probably not their target audience.

This is the first machine by TE that I’d be willing to buy as they cram a lot of stuff into a small box. However the fader issue is making me nervous as there’s quite a few moving parts in there and if the lowish price is an indicator of cheap components, we all know where this ends.
