The KO II, or the OP-1 Field? Bro, say what you want about TE, but I plan to follow through with getting my OP-1 Field this coming Sunday. I mean for f--ksake, I've been watching some videos about the OP-1 and OP-1 Field on Youtube, and I see no downsides to the limited workflow that can cause happy accidents.

@Hainbach made such a compelling case for the OP-1 and OP-1 Field in that video late last year, and after so many f--king years of trying to suppress the GAS for the og OP-1 and then the Field, I just can't anymore.

Besides, the Op-1 Field has a headphone jack, lol!

My rule: Never buy anything just because Hainbach makes it sound good. It always sounds like shit when I get my hands on it.

LOL! Oh believe me , it isn't just Hainbach who caused me OP-1 GAS. It all started with seeing Jeremy's "Aquamarine" when it popped up into my feed back in Summer 2018.

The video was a couple months old when I first saw it. My jaw dropped to the floor, and I wondered what that amazing magical device was. Of course the price (even back then) was rather prohibitive. Still is somewhat, but I work two jobs now and should be able to afford a monthly payment of upwards to $200 and still live comfortably enough. :) Just means shopping at Aldi a lot more often and eating out less and being wise with money management.

Anyways, I'm at that stage in my creative life where I rarely have GAS anymore and can basically produce serviceable-enough music in any workflow and workstation I find myself utilising (except in miRack standalone, LOL). But I'd say nearly five and a half years of GAS for the OP-1 (and now the OP-1 Field) is more than enough time for me to finally just go for it. "YOLO" and all that tosh.

Right, when learning a new workflow and learning to produce a "new to me" genre, I expect to churn out at least a few pieces of rubbish at first. The point isn't about creating the greatest mindblowing music imaginable. It's about playing and experimenting with something that is new and intriguing and having fun, and if one of those early "turds" accidentally turns into a diamond, I will polish it and post that online, lol.

Given what I've seen and learnt about the OP-1 Field and its interactivity with the iPad's USB-C port (thanks to various Youtube channels and our mate @Tarekith as well), I have a decent enough understanding of the workflow.

The OP-1 Field is basically two devices in one. The first device contains the "workstation" (synths and sampler and sequencers and effects). The second device is a 4-track tape recorder that can mimick studio tape, vintage tape, porta tape, and mini disk. It doesn't record MIDI within itself, only committing everything to audio. (Of course the OP-1 Field can be used as a MIDI controller and, if memory serves proper, can be controlled with MIDI as well).

So instead of building a track with a bunch of MIDI in a DAW, you build a track using audio like using aural lego blocks. It's a completely different workflow than what I'm used to, but I've done enough research to know what I'm getting into (as well as just viewing OP-1 and OP-1 Field vids as gear porn entertainment, lol).

Anyways, so once I get my OP-1 Field, I plan to build my first track using what I've seen and learned from various videos, commit it all to audio, record the output via USB-C into Logic Pro for iPad, and use LP4i's master assist to polish it up for me, lol.

And hopefully once I get my OP-1 Field, I can pester Tarekith my basic noob questions. 😈 (I know, he's like "oh joy".)

Jim, you and me are on same page ol buddy. You sound exactly what I said to echo opera, ask him lol! And echo opera made me REALLY want to solidify the choice after Tarekith displayed his review and videos especially about the op1F and opZ.

    Great post dude

It doesn’t come with batteries? They should jack the price up another 500 and include the batteries.

    500, in what currency?

Also, not all would use standard batteries, just a nice USB-C powerbank…

    Certainly looks like it.
Looking forward to hearing what you create with it.

  • What advantages does it have over an SP-404 mk II?

I love my SP-404. It’s a great sampler and sequencer but it’s more than just a sampler for me. I use it as my main audio interface as well and use its effects when playing live.

Can this thing be used as an audio interface and FX processor as well as a sampler?

I’m trying to understand all the excitement about it.

Not the same thing but currently my GAS is pointing to a Roland SH-4d.

TE pricing has been justifying my GAS for other devices 😂

  • I understand why people want hardware synths, but this one baffles me. How is an ipad not ten times more fun and a hundred times more capable?

iPads have no physical keys & pots, and, even the cheapest iPad to buy is more expensive than TE KO mk2…

I did not know it was only $300. Are we certain this is the real TE and not some knockoff? Price seems way too low!

(Disclaimer - I'm more baked than a strawberry rhubarb pie right now. 🤪 )

I agree. The iPad is definitely a hundred times more capable than a KO II and even more capable than an OP-1 Field. Even my iPhone is more capable.

The KO II is appealing because of its price point and simpler workflow, but I plan to go for broke on the OP-1 Field on Sunday. See, while the KO II's workflow is similar to that of Koala Sampler's workflow, no workflow is quite like the OP-1 Field's.

After I saw Hainbach's video last year, I did my extensive research on the OG OP-1's workflow (there are more videos about that than the Field's workflow, but it's basically 90% the same deal), and at first it put me off. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised I can build up a track from scratch with audio instead of MIDI in a DAW. Instead of playing in or programming MIDI notes, I'd be molding and shaping the fabric of sound itself on a god-tier level like the god Apollo.

Okay so I can do the same thing in AUM, Koala Sampler, NS2, LP4i, FLSM, Cubasis 3, Loopy Pro, Gadget, BAM, dRambo, whatever. 😂 Wait...now that I think about it for a second, I'm trying to decipher what appeals to me about the OP-1 Field. Physical buttons and pots can be rectified with a MIDI controller (but then again, the OP-1 Field IS a MIDI controller). The tape workflow can be emulated in a DAW, limiting oneself to what can be used through self-imposed rules. And the lofi effects of the four tape types can be faithfully emulated with UA's lo-fi-af plugin.

The Field's screen is bright and colourful, but so is my iPhone 14 Pro Max's screen. The OP-1 Field's battery is powerful, but so is my iPhone's. The simpler synths are neat in the OP-1 Field, but so are the plethora of simpler synths in Gadget. There are many apps out there with workflows that are limited in nature, such as using Koala Sampler in standalone mode.

I think what appeals to me about the OP-1 Field is the vibe and aesthetic to be honest. It's like when you see a certain painting, and you can't really explain why it appeals to you outside of "vibe and aesthetic". And in that sense, everyone's taste in "vibe and aesthetic" differs. Some people laud Jackson Pollock as a genius, and other people consider him overrated, scratching their heads as to why one of his splatter paintings would sell for such a high price. Same thing with the OP-1 Field. It's not for everyone. Some people laud it as a great piece of kit, and others consider it overrated, scratching their heads as to why anyone would want such a limited workflow for such a high price.

Thank you for reading my incoherent babbling. I'm sure once the high wears off, I'll probably wonder why the hell I wrote such crazy sh-t, lol. Okay, yeah, Sunday is when I plan to order my "vibe and aesthetic" from Zzounds. Cheers mates, and happy music creating no matter what you use.

Gav! Trust me my dude, my 420 session has only just begun, rofl! Man, I don't know why weed makes me think more critically while the room is spinning like a laundry machine. We'll see how I feel about the OP-1 Field by Sunday. When it comes to vibe and aesthetic, I like the OP-1 Field's vibe and aesthetic, and I still want it. But can I wait any longer? That remains to be seen. Right now it's not a question of "if" but "when" I will get an OP-1 Field.

MAN! Imagine randomly clacking keys and twisting knobs and making sounds while more stoned than a caveman. The randomly plopping it down in the tape recorder and making a bunch of aural rubbish, lol. Like splatter painting, but audio. Can you imagine doing that in an OP-1 Field?

Yeah, IDK wtf I'm on about either, so your guess is as good as mine bro.

HHH, I can imagine it actually, and if money was no object I'd buy that, along with that upcoming recorder they have coming out, and probably that mic. The field table would be a hard pass even if I was a billionaire. But no, money is a factor for me, and if I bought either of those I think when the novelty wore off, I'd feel a bit like I'd just mugged myself 🧐👻

I guess it's fine if you only buy something like that every few years. Certainly I spent a LOT more than that on my ipad, apps and controllers in my first year of really getting into ipad stuff. At least with this you're likely to actually use it, whereas with overbuying of apps, there's more chance you genuinely just wasted your money. Hopefully though, you won't accidentally drop it or splatter it with something during one of your smoking sessions 😂, try to keep it in good nick so you can resell it if the novelty wears off haha

Fine. But do you really need to purchase and own the painting? You can just admire it without having to buy it if you wish.

There are a lot of gadgets I think are great but I don't feel I have to buy & own them.

  • Why does anybody have an opinion on what someone else wants to buy? So fucking weird.

You've never had a friend who said "I'm thinking of buying XXXX but I'm not 100% sure" and then you talk with them about it?

Haha, I know what you're saying but, in fairness, I don't think it's that weird. People do always have opinions, and especially about what other people do. And a lot of the time it's at least partly because people are often influenced by the behaviour of others. So suggesting to another person that they might not need X can be a way of talking to themselves about their own urges, but can also be genuine helpfulness or concern for the other. Being too judgy is another story though, and I guess that's what you're referring to here.

    That's what she said. 🤪😂🤣

Not to worry, I'll make sure it's safe and sound. ☺️

And yeah, overbuying of apps is far more costly than an OP-1 Field. Thousands invested in the iOS ecosystem. But yeah, I will definitely use the OP-1 Field.

I think what appeals to me about the OP-1 Field is the vibe and aesthetic to be honest. It's like when you see a certain painting, and you can't really explain why it appeals to you outside of "vibe and aesthetic".

Fine. But do you really need to purchase and own the painting? You can just admire it without having to buy it if you wish.

I've admired it for years, and I will get one. Just because you hate TE doesn't mean I have to.

There are a lot of gadgets I think are great but I don't feel I have to buy & own them.

Good, you earned a gold star. 😂

Why does anybody have an opinion on what someone else wants to buy? So fucking weird.

I can see both sides. It’s fine to have an opinion about the worth of a piece of gear to you personally but yeah when you start involving yourself in other people’s purchases to the extent some are here it’s definitely weird.
