I think I’d like to own a Field eventually. I loved the first. But then again I just bought the MiniLab3 a few hours ago and I think a large portion of my GAS for hardware was coming from being without a proper midi controller for most of this year. Now having something with dedicated knobs, faders, and pads, it sorta bridges that gap. So we’ll see what I feel I “need” once I wear this in. But I’m overall really happy with just my iPad right now. It can do almost literally anything I want musically and it’s more inspiring than a lot of hw I’ve had.
Then again, why do I have an opinion on anyone else having an opinion?
I love it when things turn philosophical here 😎
I’m going to be brutally honest and at this point I don’t care if anyone finds it too overt - the Op1F is the best synth and workstation in the business and nothing comes even close, at all, not even an iPad. That’s right : an iPad is an all purpose multi tool capable of DAW. The op1F is the best and most capable self contained DAW, needing nothing to make the absolute finest sounding electronic music
Anyone talking someone out of TE simply can’t afford it. I’m one of them. Which is why when I made up my mind to own one of these one day I realized the only people dogging TE, esp the op1f , can’t afford it, OR don’t want to pay the premium for the absolute best. You literally can cut an album from start to finish without even using an “external anything “ (except if you want to send it to your computer obviously you need a cable - unless you just broadcast from your own radio station instead then you need no cables lol)
It’s cute to talk around it and let people think whatever they want but now that companies are making this thing $190/month interest free, it’s time poor people can “afford” this just like an iPhone or iPad became affordable over the past decade. The op1F is the best, and better than an iPad/iPhone, because it was designed by musicians for musicians, specifically to make a self contained unit . Meaning iPhones or an iPad Pro are over $1000, but due to financing and leasing them, anyone can “now afford them,” and retailers are making this $190 down and &190 for 12 months which is amazing news !! I hope it lasts for a couple of months so I can take advantage of it.
Don’t kid yourself (esp Jim FWIW, treat yourself dude) - at least I won’t let anyone kid me on this point, I can clearly see most people hate TE for their price and their quality on the op-z, but everyone who owns an op1F says the same things: it’s the best synth+workstation they own, and the last piece of gear they would sell.
And then it’s gets even weirder when somebody has an opinion on those who have opinions on what somebody else wants to buy.
Things get even more bizarre when somebody has an opinion about someone who has an opinion regarding somebody who has an opinion about what someone else wants to buy. Fortunately, it’s a nice opinion
[to be clear im not convincing anyone else. Im making the point for myself .
It’s not an opinion when facts and anecdotal evidence result in nearly the same thing 9/10 times. I read and thought a lot about it: If you pay sticker price for the op1 fields *you get a lot for it. Pay sticker for an entry level iPad Pro and your out a little over a grand, you need a case, keyboard and pencil, ($400 for apple Magic Keyboard and pencil),then you need apps ( a few /couple dollars worth maybe to get your workflow and essentials if you Can find one reasonably quickly , again just going along picking things up as needed sticker prices), then you need hardware controllers (another hundred or more), so you end up paying close to the op1F or more.
Now at THAT point, maybe the iPad can now outperform the other, like buying a car and adding aftermarket stuff to it to beat some stock car. But now it’s no longer a comparison of similar items (because it never was to begin with). One is a musical instrument; an iPad is a computer capable of music making but it definitely is not an instrument as is, out of the box
Anything is possible. But the op1F makes it possible to not ever need an app, host, daw program, cables, controllers or anything. And it sounds as good as you could ask for.
My opinion is people don’t like TE for price/affordability. The fact is the op1F is incomparable . Anyone on here is an adult who can make their own mind up , as clearly I have and better musicians than me have as well more importantly . Anyway do whatever makes you happy.]
I definitely don't agree with all of this. I use my ipad for tons of things other than music-making, for one. Many people already have an iPad, so there's no initial cost for them. Then, if they have a bit of restraint and do their research, they could easily have a nice music making set-up for a few hundred bucks.
There is a lot that's valuable to discuss in relation to the phenomenon of a music gear company like this, with these kind of prices. And though as I said, I would buy a few of these toys it I had the money, that's honestly not the only issue to discuss. Any purchase made always comes at an opportunity cost. You used that money to buy A, now you don't have the money to buy B. There are likely plenty of ppl who wouldn't jibe with the workflow of some of these TE tools and would avoid them for more than just financial reasons.
There are also uncomfortable questions about the environmental costs of gear, why ppl are spending this money on gear when there are people starving all over the world etc.
This is far from a one-dimensional topic.
There is also, always, on this forum the very real question of addiction and impulse control. C'mon, you see people here who are clearly living basically day to day, absolutely broke as hell, who are yet buying apps that they really can't afford.
These are just a few points, there is more I could say but I don't want to spend too much time on this topic, it's not a priority for me personally.
Anyway, my point is that I think there are plenty of holes and oversights in your analysis. It's good to have a discussion though, I think we're all learning things from it and that's really the point of a forum like this.
I succumbed to serious GAS for an OP-Z a year ago, even though I'd read a heap of online comments about issues people had with theirs...
I finally convinced myself that my life wouldn't be complete without one. When it turned up it worked for a couple of hours, but then wouldn't charge. Turns out it was a known issue, unfortunately the cure was not so well known... 😬
After spending many days going down online rabbit holes in search of a working fix, and beating myself up about being a sucker, some magic incantation and Nintendo-like cheat sequence of button pushes finally got it able to accept a charge!
Now... I absolutely love it!! 👍
Oh yeah I agree with the point you’re making here lol but there are some comments here that sort of go beyond opinion and into trying to talk people out of things (or at least it felt that way) and that’s when it sort of becomes weird for me. Unless you’re they’re wife lol
Jim needs a wife like Simon, yep, would save him a fortune 😂
Fair enough Gavin
If you already own an iPad Pro - it’s a bit of a different story , I will concede that
Btw hotstrange I wasn’t trying to convince you to go through with it, I was just saying it would be cool if you Jim and me all ended up with one at the same time but it’s just a silly thought, I’m not trying to convince you to get the op1 AND Minilab 3 lol
People don't need an iPad Pro tho either, that's the thing, buddy! Plenty of ppl here doing good stuff with more basic ipads and there's a huge market for 2nd hand and refurbished stuff.
As I mentioned in an earlier post tho, the main danger is that many people are not good at saying 'enough is enough' and instead fall down the app buying rabbit hole. I imagine that buyers of the op-1F could also find themselves in that position though, buying lots of other stuff. It's hard for ppl to be satisfied with what they have and our society certainly hasn't bred us to be easily content with what we have.
Good counterpoint
Seems that the speakers contacts aren’t well seated now, causing the speaker to stop working, seems like a cool device, a decent price, but QC looks AWOL.
The OP-1Field is a great synth. Full stop.
It will make you a better musician if you use it.
So will the iPad once you find the app that suits your unique workflow. Full stop.
Soooo…use what inspires you and keeps you tuned to your craft.
It does suck that you can’t surf the web with the OP-1F or the new KO2 EP…or does it 🤓
Onwards and upwards 👊🏼🎚️💕
It’s not about power or performance…it’s about the aesthetic relationship one has to the instrument they create music on.
Why buy Jordan’s when Keds will do?
My comment wasn't really about the OP-1 and if it is worth getting or not. I don't know enough about it to give an opinion.
It was more about consumerism and people buying lots of stuff. Jim has talked in the past here about buying tons of apps - e.g. how much he has spent on getting everything Korg.
When he wrote a post that sounded like he was having second thoughts I wanted to kind of say "hey, you don't need to buy everything that takes your fancy". It was meant as a message of support.
I can cook too.
I’d be very surprised if such a high price aka premium manufacturer wouldn’t be doing their utmost to rectify the problem for existing users as well as fixing the product still on factory floor.
If this perception of reliability spreads further it can really hurt their business.
Woah that's some crazy off topic guilt spilling out there. You'll feel better if you sell your iPad and give the money to some of the brokeass addicted AB forum members you're talking about who are living hand to mouth whilst typing on their expensive tablets. Gddamn musicans are killing the planet with their samplers.
Hahaha….that’s funny
…but also there’s some truth in it. It’s not the musicians but all of humanity chasing their tails because there’s so much stuff they are able to buy, even in the so called ‘cost of living crisis’.
It’s not the musicians but everyone with cheap clothes that then end up shipped to poorer countries in aid but being such poor quality they end up discarded pronto ending up in landfill. It’s the kids toys too, man, these are my personal scars as a father.
I’m not saying we should run for the hills but I certainly recognise and see this problem on a daily basis. Perhaps music toys aren’t the best example as they do have a huge second hand market and generally do last longer than a £10 new plastic coat.
But I see the point @Gavinski is making.
I now pronounce you husband and…well who wants to be the wife? 😆
Yeah, my main point is that discussion in a thread like this has a hell of a lot more going on than just 'can I afford this or not', I'm glad you see that too, cheers
Google about the bent OP-Z and the issues with the original OP-1 and TEs lack of action. It doesn’t paint the prettiest picture. But then again it’s usually the loud minority complaining while the satisfied majority don’t leave as many glowing reviews. And I’ve always read where people say TE went above and beyond. I had mine for a few years and it was still going strong when I sold it in and everyone I know personally had good luck. And my pocket operators have been working since release. So it can’t be all bad lol
Yeah, it could be the juxtaposition of the high price with failing equipment. If one spends a lot on something and get burned they will sure voice their pain everywhere esp now with social media etc.
All comparisons between an iPad and the op1-f is difficult to describe…
All in all, nothing compairs to Teenage Engineerings OP1 Field - lightweight, size, functionality, sound quality, onboard workflow - nothing on the market just now is better or more fun for real synth nerds…
In the same time - really loves my iPad Pro and all 1000 music apps bought since 2009, but, it ain’t an TE…
I agree. Gavin is right, about people spending and knowing enough is enough, but also, I have to just say I 100% with Erkka on this. His main point is the central point - nothing else is like it, nothing else does A-z so well and refined, and yes, you Can get the same results with an iPad, but there is something to his point of all in one function in addition to what echo said, it also has an extremely gorgeous aesthetic appeal. Combine it altogether and with the updates with firmware, you really have an incomparable package.
And I type that from my iPad M1 full disclosure, which I would trade with my apps for anyone who wants to trade their op1f….j/k, I’m keeping my iPad and saving for the op… the only thing I want to know is if recording with AUM is somehow easier or has a better way of routing the incoming audio than cubasis does ? Like for example would you use AUM to separate the 4 tracks in the AUM oR ape matrix mixer before sending out to cubasis or can you do that from the op 1?
Just build it in Drambo, will ya?
Done.
Lots of talk about the op-1 field here so I thought I would mention that I heard from a good source that an update is coming soon. I have no idea the details but I’m extremely excited.
