New Korg Update: Gadget 3 with AU Support!

  • With Gadget and Patterning now going AUv3 I can't see going back to the standard desktop/laptop DAW setup ever again.

I've been using iOS music production apps exclusively in my home studio since 2015 and nearly every single "wishlist"/"I can dream can't I?" line has been crossed. We have an Apple backed, near parity version of Logic; AU's have become the VST's of this format; there are exclusive ground breaking app developers creating brilliant apps for iOS only, as well as industry standard plugin devs like FabFilter, Moog, Waves, etc porting code perfect versions of some of the best plugins available regardless of format.

It's seriously heavy duty and I'll be the first to admit I take it for granted all the time. Announcements like the AU Gadget update shake me back around to see just how incredible the technology has become. A device that's less than the size of a magazine is more powerful than the major recording studios of the 80's, 90's and 2000's.

Thanks to Korg for changing Gadget from a composition/production environment to a powerful suite of world class plugins.

Yeah. I always think how heavy a reel of half or one inch tape was compared to an iPad. And that's just the tape - not the recorder. And mixer and all the other stuff...

  • @Samu : Thanks for the wave box tip

  • I was hoping Rosario and Durban would show up as FX I can apply to inputs.. why don't they?

    That would be super cool.

  • @coolout : Dontou need an actual lap/desk top to configure nonokeystudio for Gadget?

Hopefully, they will roll out AUv3 of the standalones like OdysseI and MonoPoly and ims-20. Fingers-crossed.

Yes, those are the ones that I would like to see, especially the iMS-20.

I haven’t had Gadget installed for a long time. Not sure if I would use the included gadgets much, so might not update. Maybe I’ll watch Doug’s video and decide.

It’s a free update FYI! Or is it just a matter of not having storage space that has you hesitant?

If you have the storage, would probably be worth it to just upgrade and try out rather than rely solely on demos.

I just posted the remake of Daft Punk's One More Time using the new Gadget Sydney.
The reconstruction was so much fun!
From the new IFX, I used a pitch shifter to correct the tuning,
and inside Sydney I used a HPFilter to make the intro.
Edit: Sorry for the laggy recording.

Sydney seems right up my alley for Justice-styled fodder within Gadget! (Although for Justice-styled fodder I may just stick with Koala Sampler standalone for those duties.) Either way, job well done mate. :)

No. It automatically integrates if Gadget is running. In fact, you have to go to the advanced settings for Gadget to turn that behavior off if you don't want it.

I have a very quick question for the Gadget pros…
If I tweak a dial — eg the fine tuning of a drum sample pitch in the Recife gadget — how do I reset the dial back to 0??

As far as I know, all KORG apps supports the "flick" gesture for rounding/fine tuning.
Simply perform a vertical, quick and short drag on the knob.
If there is decimal values, it will be first rounded. After that it will inc/dec by 1 unit.

Don’t get me wrong, I started in music recording in 1994 and as we old dudes often do I totally look at analog through rose colored glasses. We forget just how much more fiddly and intricate the technology was. Even in my home setup of cassette PortaStudio’s and pro-sumer reel to reels you had to clean the heads, condition the pinch roller and demagnetize the tape path between sessions.

The convenience of digital probably helped it overtake analog as much as sound quality did.

  • Hope this is fixed soon… will be nice to see the instruments…

  • Anyone know why Rosario and Durban can't be added as input FX?

  • It’s really nice having all these drums and Stockholm as audio units now

  • As some others here, I have not used Gadget much of late until this update, of which I love.

Quick question though, why do the loop and midi buttons light up after going on the ifx page? Is this a bug?

Nice demo - really shows how the original was put together by mangling that disco sample.

Also wondering why they aren't available, been trying to route things to them in AUM prior to this update with no luck and was hoping this would finally let me use the FX Gadgets.

  • While the Gadget 3.0 update in general is pretty nice some of the AUV3's do have some weird bugs that need fixing.
For example in the Phoenix AUv3 the waveform selector is not working at all after choosing the init preset, all options (Tri, Saw, Square) produce a saw-waveform :(

The Phoenix Gadget inside Gadget works as expected, so it's a glitch/bug in the AUv3.

I honestly have no energy to go thru all the Gadget AUv3's and check that every parameter work as expected...

    Cheers!

Anyone had any issues with Brussels? It’s been the only AU that has caused a crash for me so far and it caused all 4 loaded Gadgets to crash (Tokyo, Abu Dhabi, Berlin plus Brussels). Didn’t have any issues with all 3 until Brussels was brought into the number 4 spot.

    Edit: Chiangmai crashes also.

Edit edit: Chicago too. This one merely in just one instance with nothing else. Guess it’s time to do some reports to Korg.

Having some of them crash by simply just sitting there. Don’t even have to touch anything lol maybe it’s an OS issue.

I must admit, as much as I absolutely adore Gadget and love working in depth with it more than any other app, I do find myself double tapping dials and sliders to reset them out of habit from using that gesture in just about every other app! And it's frustrating when nothing happens. Some dials I find extremely troublesome to fine tune even with the flick gesture, like the tuning dial in Bilbao for example. But overall it's a small annoyance compared to the huge fun and productivity that the Gadget environment provides me.

It's a pretty simple and standard function. I'm surprised it has so far never been implemented in Gadget.

Wooot, i absolutely love this flick feature, i think it should be implemented in ALL apps 😂😂😂
