  • Nice video, @thesoundtestroom. Pretty fast and fun workflow, maybe I'll have to reconsider and cave in for this Korg stuff.

So has anyone figured out how to import into either of the new gadgets?

Easy, just dump your files into the Gadget folder and browse from within the Gadgets...
    ...or use the import function.

Ok found how that works on Sydney (there’s a button on the sample window) I had been trying the program setting….

But can’t find a way to load new rhythms in SantaAnna

  • My 'hot take': While I appreciate the UI updates and added FX in Gadget 3, I would had prefer if Korg went the other way and made Gadget a AU host.

The app has been out for nearly 10 years and I've collected every Gadget except the Polysix . The standard Gadget-only synths (that don't have a standalone app version) cover a decent range, but tend be more limited 'bite sized' versions of different synthesis types. That's great for quickly finding a specific style for a track inside the app, but in the wider landscape of iOS synths there's always a better sounding, more flexible version from someone else. I've never been in AUM or Cubasis and wish I had Korg's mini version of Moog, Oberheim, wavetable/Waldorf, TB-303, or Rhodes piano. I think some folks are just addicted to endlessly collecting AU synths.

What I really would like is AU host in Gadget, as the FX are much more limited in scope. I love Gadget and have done a fair amount of commercially-released tracks and remixes using it, but it always comes to a point where I have to stem out the project, then mix in another DAW. So many proper tools for mixing are missing. AU host would solve that.

  • Yeah I get all that, but this is still very cool…. In a similar way, but slightly opposite: The only thing I wish was added now is gadgets sequencer to be used as an audio unit in another host LOL (mostly just AUM)

The strange ‘vertical orientation’ aside, I like using it so much more than GarageBands or Cubasis…

  • Did anyone else notice how awesome the ‘genre selection preview’ clip/scene loopers are?

I NEED TO BE ABLE TO LOAD MY OWN CLIPS INTO THERE! How amazing would that be?!

I don’t think you can… after messing with it for a few hours, it appears that it’s just a waveform sampler/looper that runs through some pretty decent guitar amp sims…u can change the start/end points and speed of those loops tho

This got me kinda excited and then went limp:) at I was hoping to finally get a Monopoly in AUv3. Maybe soon.

Unfortunately, that would like vastly impact Gadget’s stability and efficiency. A few developers I know that added AU hosting have mentioned that it has been hugely more time-consuming than they anticipated and comes with constant headaches because they have to workaround bugs in both the AUs they host AND bugs in the OS.

It’s probably wise for them to not dip their toe in that and use the time to port the remaining synths and develop new ones.

    Genuine question:
I’ve never tried Gadget, but own almost every other iOS sequencer, grooveapp, synth etc. I’ve got a lot.

I still haven’t found the golden workflow. Use my phone/ipad a as a sketchbook and sound design tool and always finish my tracks on my Macbook. Like patchwork. I like to create quick sketches and to optimise them later. I never use presets or commercial loops in my final tracks.

I’m always searching for better workflow. I own a Korg NAnokey.

What would I benefit in getting Korg Gadget?

    Thanks

    Try the free version first.

  • On a practical level: What is the correct midi mapping, say, for Bilbao in AUM? I would love to use Octachron or Polybeat to sequence it. Selecting the midi map for Gadget in Polybeat only gives 8 lanes; general midi doesn't quite align either.

Well I asked because I like the opinions from experienced users.

But Yes, I’ve tried it today.
The workflow is great and fast, and I made something slightly different than I do in other apps.
Not sure if it is enough to dive into their ecosystem (and economic)

I purchased nodes the other day:
Fun, fast and flexible as well.

It should just be chromatic, starting from C2.

I agree, but the lack of high-end FX is still the only downside to Gadget in my opinion. If I had Mixbox, Eventide, or Fabfilter stuff in Gadget, it would make finishing projects a whole lot easier. I can see from Korg's perspective they can now sell Gadget as more of a extra synth collection than all-in-one app.

Side note- I've also owned a Nanokey Studio for many years and it's probably the only hardware/software combo on ipad that comes close to desktop-level of integration. The Nanokey has a native Gadget mode where all the knobs, pads, x/y, etc. are automatically mapped to the app. Combined with the 'walled garden' approach and it's stability, that combo makes Gadget feel more like a hardware groovebox than anything else on iOS.

  • Holy freakin’ moly.

  • Finally seeing some tests of the new gadgets. Sydney seems like it should have been included in the update for free as a quality of life improvement and maybe people could buy the sample packs or something. The guitar gadget is situational and I think it’s fine as a paid update.

Sydney would solve the lack of time stretching in gadget with audio.

  • It only just dawned on me: Santa Ana… Santana 🎸😎
(yeah I get kinda slow during the hibernation period)

You can buy all the Gadgets as AU/VST3 and export projects from iOS Gadget as Ableton sets. It’s pretty seamless…

  • Have some of the effects disappeared? Gadget 2 had a shimmer reverb, plus a “submarine” reverb (octave down anti-shimmer) and I can’t see those, or some others?

  • @coolout For me, there are plenty of more fully featured synths than one can shake a stick at out on iOS. Having the AUv3 versions of the "bite sized" synths works perfectly for me (having just spent over a month producing in the OP-1 Field). Now if only the external Gadget-compatible apps can get AUv3s, but it looks like that's already on the roadmap. I just wish Korg didn't remove the ability to transfer gadgets like Darwin and Pompeii from iPad to iPhone. That's rather short-sighted, but maybe they plan to make the iPad-only apps universal, removing the need for transferring in the first place.

  • Welp in light of this news I finally bought Otorii and Ebina. Wanted them both since release but never bought them because I was using Gadget less and less. Now that I can use them anywhere I instantly snatched them up. Santa Ana is quite good too. Haven’t tried Sydney and also realized I bought Vancouver years ago and never probably tried it lol. A lot to chew on now 😆

I have a very quick question for the Gadget pros…
If I tweak a dial — eg the fine tuning of a drum sample pitch in the Recife gadget — how do I reset the dial back to 0??

No matter what I do, such as double- or long-pressing, I can’t seem to reset the dial/parameter. Surely it doesn’t rely on having super-fine motor skills? I’m beginning to worry this is one of several small usability quirks that dampened my enthusiasm for this app when I stopped using it so avidly back in 2017/18.

Hopefully there’s a quick and simple fix.

p.s. apologies for highjacking, but common sense dictates you ask a question where it’s most likely to get an answer

  • Hi Korg, remember when we fell in love for the first time? Then I cheated on you and took a wild ride in the vastness of other beauties. I even deleted you from my system and thought things were completely over between us. Dear God, I was not thinking clearly…
Can we try again please? I would like to introduce you to some of my friends. I’m sure we’ll all get along pretty ok.
Thanks Korg, you’re looking great btw, as always 🥰

  • Does the LK built in midi mapping for Gadget work for for the AU apps ?

  • Didn't wake up this morning thinking I'd be getting Jazzed about KORG Gadget again, but here we are! If nothing else I've wanted an AUv3 of Chicago for a long time. But I just watched the Khordmaster Video on the subject at the features in the Gadget app look great too. Heck, this has me thinking about the desktop app!

  • Ok can confirm LK mapping for named Gadgets as AU works out the box.

  • Hell freezes, pigs fly, blood comes from stone…
    F-ing Brilliant! Thank you Korg!

  • I'm having a great time dusting off all these easy to get a grip on mini synths again. 😎

For some reason the one that tickles me the most to have to slap into projects is Tokyo. I always get a big grin when I play with that one.

  • @Samu said:
Over all Gadget 3.0 is a nice update but sampling and internal resampling is still quite a chore with export and import...
...Imagine if the 'sampler gadgets' had an option to directly sample any available input or track on the fly?

    Again @Samu with a great point .

No double-pressing to reset unfortunately. But most gadgets (and others settings) support a ‘flick’ gesture for small increments.

  • I was (ok, still am) quite happy about something small like the new eq. The original has a somewhat strange, unpredictable behavior in certain setting. I like there is a graphical interface now….but it‘s too small and fiddly. And „finetunine“ the values does not work well. Korg has still some work to do but it‘s a very good direction 👍
