That must just be bad luck. iOS is responsible for the exposure and the focusing. The only thing XP4N does is suggest an EV bias. I then just request iOS to take a picture and iOS does all the exposing and focusing.
I reckon it uses the same exposure algorithms as Apple's own camera app. If not, that would mean Apple keep the best algos for themselves.
Ah yes, orientation lock is a known problem (and one I can't solve). There's no way for me to programmatically determine if orientation lock is enabled. It simply stops giving the app updates about rotations, which will mess up the camera feed.
You can swipe on the viewfinder to change the EV bias, and it will be sticky until you reset it
If you’ve got an action button on your iPhone it’s fairly easy to create a shortcut that allows you to open XP4N or the standard camera, depending on the way you oriented your phone. The only thing that’s bugging me right now is that if I want to open XP4N with the action and volume button on top, the camera is upside down. After changing the orientation of your iPhone, it eventually corrects but then the shortcut would have no function. I guess this could be solved?
To create the shortcut:
Within the settings of your action button, assign the shortcut.
Couldn't decide if I preferred the Balanced or Contrast BW shots, so why not just upload them all 😅
Wow! The colors in the second one are gorgeous, but the wide angle effect in the first one is also stunning!
My vote goes for B&W, it’s more dramatic! 🤩
Yeah that was my winner too

One thing I really love about this app is that you don't need to do any post-processing, every shot I've posted is straight from the Camera Roll, and they look great just as they are.
.
At the first Version of XPAN4 the file Name was IMG_1200.jpg
Now the file Name is QAFB8256.jpg and, of corse, every time different. That's not comfortabel. What happend?
Not sure what's going on. I could just reproduce some of the saving issues, even though I haven't touched anything in that part of the code for several updates (just looking at the code now to verify I'm not going mad; there's literally nothing that should be causing these file saving issues).
As I wrote above, the only thing I've changed is that I am now using the new XCode with the new iOS18 Libraries which Apple conveniently decided to install for me.
I can't reproduce the "black screen" however. Is there a way to consistently make that happen?
The Gritty mode is indeed washed out. The Metropolis look is very desaturated/gray/drab with only a hint of color. So that's not a bug.
In fact the names should be "XP4N (film mode) xxxx.jpg". How are you exporting the files?
Exporting from where? I download it from my iPhone 15 (via USB cable) to my MacMini, short import to LR, eport to my MacMini. Thats it.
The original file Name are the same (.jpg)
A quick note about this forum. It is slowly becoming confusing. I don't know whether it makes sense to post so much photos here.
Therefore my XPAN 4 photos here: Flickr
This seems to be a known iOS problem I have no control over.
For example, this seems to be a similar problem:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254826013
If you airdrop an image from the phone to your mac you should be seeing the actual file name it's supposed to have without iOS changing it (you can also see that if you look into the photo's details in the Camera Roll):
Funny thing is, at the beginning september my first pictures don't had this problem.....
I had to change the file saving method in order to include the EXIF and location data, which wasn’t possible with the method I was using initially.
I could either ask apple to make the JPEGs for me and have their filename numbering but no EXIF and metadata, or I'd have to create the JPEGs myself and use my own file naming (which Apple apparently ignore and mess up when exporting).
It still does not explain why Apple mess with the filenames in the first place, but Apple gonna Apple.
FWIW XP4N works just fine with the new Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 Pro right out of the box, functions the same as the normal volume buttons. If anything it's been more reliable for me, I still once in a while was having issues with the volume buttons not doing anything in the app on my iPhone 15 Pro until I restarted it. Nice!
Nice one! I was hoping that was the case! There's no way for me to test that as the iPhone Simulator doesn't have the Camera Control button, but the API for it was pretty straightforward.
You're the first to confirm
I don’t understand the Ko Tanzaku mode. Regardless of whether my iPad is in portrait or landscape, the “viewfinder” remains horizontal. Yes, I get a “vertical “ photo when I click the button, but shouldn’t the viewfinder be in that configuration before I take the pic?
"Ko Tanzaku" format is broken after the last update. At least for me.
How do you even enable it? I only have 6 film type choices.
No, as far as I can tell it's working as it should.
Ko-Tanzaku is vertical, so the images are saved vertically. If you hold your phone in portrait mode, the viewfinder will show you what the image will look like.
It's labeled "Experimental Bonus Feature" because it's a very specific little gimmick which is probably too niche for most photographic settings.
This is how you traditionally use a Ko-Tanzaku: you hang it vertically on the wall. It can either contain a landscape motif or a piece of calligraphy.
Obviously if you want to use it in landscape orientation it's easy to rotate it that way, but conceptually it made very little sense to save the image in landscape orientation (as was pointed out to me by the forum members who suggested the feature).

Not for me on my ipad. "viewfinder" stays horizontal regardless of how I turn it...
Make sure you have latest update, then click on the Xp4n logo in the app , which takes you to settings. It's in there.
It's not in the list of film types
That's probably a limitation of using an ipad versus a phone then. Is it not possible to get the iPad to show the app in portrait (don't have an iPad nearby atm)?
Ah, ok.
Unfortunately I have an iphone 6 which won't allow me to install ios 13 ,...because it stops at ios 12, so I can't have XP4N on my phone.....
Fuck you Apple!!
I’m an artist, if I position the camera horizontally for a certain composition, I want that camera to save the true desired orientation. If you noticed my photos in that format are not intended to be anything close, such as respectful Ko-Tanzaku art. It’s just an exploration of that format.
Just realised that I didn't answer this question. No, is the answer
