I don’t understand the Ko Tanzaku mode. Regardless of whether my iPad is in portrait or landscape, the “viewfinder” remains horizontal. Yes, I get a “vertical “ photo when I click the button, but shouldn’t the viewfinder be in that configuration before I take the pic?

"Ko Tanzaku" format is broken after the last update. At least for me.

No, as far as I can tell it's working as it should.

Ko-Tanzaku is vertical, so the images are saved vertically. If you hold your phone in portrait mode, the viewfinder will show you what the image will look like.

It's labeled "Experimental Bonus Feature" because it's a very specific little gimmick which is probably too niche for most photographic settings.

This is how you traditionally use a Ko-Tanzaku: you hang it vertically on the wall. It can either contain a landscape motif or a piece of calligraphy.

Obviously if you want to use it in landscape orientation it's easy to rotate it that way, but conceptually it made very little sense to save the image in landscape orientation (as was pointed out to me by the forum members who suggested the feature).

I’m an artist, if I position the camera horizontally for a certain composition, I want that camera to save the true desired orientation. If you noticed my photos in that format are not intended to be anything close, such as respectful Ko-Tanzaku art. It’s just an exploration of that format.

Sure. But that doesn’t make it “broken”, just slightly less convenient for your use case because you have to rotate the image 90°. Hardly the end of the world, is it? ;)

How do you even enable it? I only have 6 film type choices.

You need to go to Settings->XP4N->Ko-Tanzaku->On.

Haha, you almost got me, but unfortunately physics is exact science. 🤗

But on my ipad version, there's no "settings" button. You have to click on the "xp4n" logo to access settings. Just to be clear for @Darkstring :)

    This one:

  • In the latest update I’ve moved the settings into the app itself (in the about/settings screen).

Tap the XP4N logo to access it.

Apple broke something - either in the new XCode or in the updated libraries - causing changes in the settings app to be unreliable. This accounted for some of the unexplained weirdness that was reported yesterday.

I didn’t want to wait for Apple to look into it so I just moved the settings inside the app instead to circumvent Apple’s setting system..

Ah! ok, that one. Thought you meant settings within the app itself.
Anyway, Bram mentions what I was talking about in his post above..

Oh man, thanks for this! I have a lot of apps and having to go to the setting app, then scroll all the way down to the X’s was very tedious. Much better this way :)

  • Agreed, a lot easier to do it in the app.

Also, I love that the iPhone 16 has a dedicated camera button to open the stock app. Now I can set the action button to open Xp4n!

  • Thanks for all the continued feedback and support, guys. XP4N has been quite a learning journey for me, going outside of my usual field. <3

  • On quite a few occasions XP4N loads and starts showing the video feed in the viewfinder but then goes black after I tap to change the film.

The only way to get it working again is to force quit and start over. Then it’s usually ok again for a while.

The last time was directly after updating to the latest version.

(Tip: if you swipe down on the settings list you can type a few letters into the search box for faster finding of things. It doesn't always work great, but its way better than scrolling.)

Duh! 🙄 I forgot you could do that. thx 🙏

I was having this problem too. I tried deleting the app… hard reset… then reinstall. Has not yet done it since. However, he updated it again before I reinstalled, so I don’t know if it was the update or the delete/reset/reinstall that seems to have fixed it

  • Sorry but what is "Ko-Tanzaku"?????

Really nice with all these colorful reflections!

  • Just had a nice walk around the area where I work (really lends itself to the new Gritty mode and the Low Light mode).

    Love that one 👆

The wide format and the film stocks are really inspiring to use. A lot of the photos I've taken with the app would be really boring had they been shot with the regular phone camera, but the XP4N processing gives them so much vibe. It's really fun and inspiring.

  • I enjoyed all new entries. 🤩 I would probably have a hard time choosing which one is the best.

Here, meet my trusty friend Fred. He likes to watch and pose, he also prefers Gritty mode. 🤦‍♂️

I'm really enjoying it myself as well. Interesting how I find myself taking pictures of trash containers and actually liking the result :D

Just bring it on, this graffiti is like a portal to another universe.

I also like this one, the colors are spectacular. 🤩

Maybe not the best composition but the objects are both lovely and you get the reddish glow in the 0-CTRL’s buttons knobs

  • Had a few days in Glasgow last week. My favourite city in the UK , hands down

This is at Kelvingrove Museum/gallery. Loads of cool stuff there. Free entry. And there’s an organ recital every day at 1pm
I took pics of these heads on different settings,… will upload in a sec…
