Just wanted to say I finally picked this up last night and I'm pretty impressed with it. It's exciting to know it's going to get even better.
I wanted to post something here though just to say the biggest reason why I picked it up is the participation by the Diode developers here on the forums. I hate the idea of getting comfortable with an app in my workflow only to have to abandon it because it's not being maintained (and improved even) by the developer.
I didn't need another drum machine that badly but now I have one that is quite functional already and I know I can count on for a long time to come.
Thanks and keep up the great work!
I don't need another either but I'll get this for the same reason - great support. Sounds like the Auria issues are related to the new MIDI beta version, I think...
Thanks Paulyboy (and the others that are appreciative of developer responsiveness, and appreciative of the Diode). Our goal is to make Diode-108 the best sample-based drum machine on the iPad. We want to give some new tools while still making sense, we want people to be able to trade kits (you can do that even now, sure would love to see a grass roots kit-trading community), we want people to have fun and make music. We know Diode is quirky (and has lots of wanted and unwanted personality--what would be the point of making a drum machine like all the others?), and we're glad that so much of the response has been very positive. Honestly, I want you to love the Diode!
Even while I'm wrapping up MIDI sync, another developer is working on our next big feature and and another is working on bug fixes and stability. This train is moving.
MIDI, Audioshare, and AudioCopy were huge features to get in, and they were based on input from users all over the place (obviously here in this forum). With 1.10 (coming soon), we think we have a product we can start marketing. We need to do PR, grovel for reviews, etc. People will always want more than we give, but we want to be sure our app is causing more delight than misery, and with 1.10 hopefully we have crossed that bridge. We're serious about Diode and committed to it.
Also, we sure could use more reviews on the app store!
The beta version of Diode is the first version with MIDI. We hope to come out supporting as many apps as possible and being as transparent as possible and providing setup documentation. My goal is to make it as good as possible, as it's a key feature (especially given people's comments about DM1's MIDI).
We are rock solid syncing to many apps. Yesterday I was alerted by a beta tester that Auria and Diode are doing a drunken dance with each other, so I'm looking into that today. I'm not 100% clear on how good Auria's MIDI is in their current version. Maybe it's fine, or maybe I'll have to write a little code to compensate for what I'm seeing.
I have an in-town beta tester who says Cubasis sync is rock solid and left it running in sync for 45 minutes last night. I'll try to see it in person soon to see for myself. Until we have been out for a while with 1.1, all the MIDI compatibility claims should be assumed to have asterisks next to them. I will try to get some youtube videos up soon showing an iPad perfectly in sync with this & that (probably Volcas first).
MIDI on the iPad is ... challenging, but when it works it's a blast!
I was referring to the beta version of Aria - as far as I know the current version doesn't support MIDI (though I'm a new user and might have missed it). I'd record the drums as an audio track so I'm guessing it'd be fine with that.
Oh! I don't have the Auria Beta. I'm using Auria. It does have MIDI, but a surprising number of people think it doesn't.
Yeah there's no problem recording an audio track and using Dropbox to transfer it (or, in 1.10, AudioShare or AudioCopy) if Auria supports that. I'm a newbie to Auria myself, and all I'm trying to do right now is make sync work well between Auria and Diode.
I wasn't aware of that, could you elucidate ?
@Igneous1, You weren't aware that it has MIDI, or you weren't aware that people think it doesn't?
That statement was too sweeping. I meant to refer to MIDI Beat Clock in particular. I believe Auria used to have just time code. The app's been around a long time, so searches for MIDI sync on Auria turn up a lot of mixed assertions.
Anyway, it does have MIDI beat clock now.
Hello Diode person,
I meant the former, not the latter
I'm running the latest Auria. In Menu/Settings/MIDI you can send and receive clock. You are supposed to be able to "Send MIDI Start and Stop" but that doesn't seem to work, so Diode treats a Continue as a Start (for now).
Thanks for the info - I didn't realise it had this feature. I'd be recording via audio anyway so not an issue.
OK. Just spent some quality time with MIDI sync.
Situation: I'm running Diode-108 synced from MidiBus (using a solid wall of 16th note hi hats). Everything is nice and solid. Simply running Auria alongside these two programs causes a gallop. Auria isn't even involved yet--it's a bystander. This happens on the lowliest of the low Mini and a brand new Air 2.
Just to sanity check, I try the whole deal with Gadget instead of Diode. Same thing only worse, as Gadget gallops even harder than Diode, makes scratching noises, and even exits out sometimes.
I try nordbeat 2 instead of MidiBus. Same thing.
For now, rendering the Diode song and pasting it into Auria is the sane way to work.
I'll try to get in touch with the Auria dev to see if there are some ideas for the current Auria or hope for Auria Pro.
I'm open to ideas, and eager to find out if y'all can repro the problem with other apps.
In this thread there is someone who has managed sync with many different apps, including Gadget, so it's possible that the settings and procedure have to be just so. So maybe Diode already works in Auria and I just don't know how to set it up right: http://www.auriaapp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=12903&hilit=sync
This is a boss ass post. Totally appreciate the details and I'm hoping you find it's merely a setting and can get on with more interesting stuff!
Thanks. Not a lot more that I can do for the moment, so I am indeed moving on to more interesting things as soon as I make a few tools in Diode to detect any similar problems we may run into.
@Diode Hi. I finally have some free time from working for music. I've been reading your posts about Diode and sync but I missed the part on how you actually implement it. I can't find any MIDI settings in Diode. Thanks for you your help.
Hi. It has been submitted to the app store. Some people here are beta testers. When 1.1.0 comes out, you'll find MIDI settings on the PADS view. We'll be making some MIDI videos (today?) and bringing up a MIDI FAQ soon.
@Diode Cool. About how long does it usually take for an app to make it to the App Store for sale after you summit it to Apple?
It's hard to predict. I found this site: http://appreviewtimes.com/
I just had a beta tester confirm that having Auria open screws up timing of other apps. There must be some way around that.
@Diode108,
Could you help me on syncing loopy HD with diode? I can't find any midi settings on diode and on loopy hd , the only option is network midi and can't set loopy as master nor slave...
iOS 8.3 mini retina and latest loopy audiobus and diode-108
Hi Korakios, the version with sync is going through Apple's approval process. 1.1.0 is the version you are waiting for.
Sorry if all the sync discussion has been misleading. If you would like to be a beta tester and get the MIDI sync now, please email our support page.
Ok, it makes sense now! I'll wait for the update. Thanks for the feedback
Really looking forward to this
I have never been much of a sync-er but have decided Diode is going to be the one (I think watching @supadom's sync-awesomeness has got me motivated...)
Hello, Before I bite, does this app have any like ummm......... Drum set sounds? Like an acoustic set? I listened to Doug's vid, and heard mostly electronic style beats. Which sounded good, and may be all that is intended for the app. It looks very cool....
Thanks!
We'll be working on a set of videos soon. Obviously we need one where we walk through the kits!
There are a few acoustic kits using sounds from 99Drums. And another using a jazz kit from Orange Tree Samples. Here's an example using that kit:
We're hoping that people make and share their own kits, as well!
Thanks @Diode108 !
Sure. And remember it's pretty easy to build your own kit. Just get 16 samples you like (searching for "free acoustic drum samples" turns up a bunch of great candidates), put them into dropbox, then run Diode and load one sample into each slot. We analyze the samples so that you can play them chromatically in Note Mode!
Get the volume levels the way you want them. Then save it as a custom kit. A kit is a zip file with all the samples and settings. If the samples are freely distributable, pass the kit around!
Thanks @Diode108 !
Very cool, Sold.
I'm having trouble importing drum samples from dropbox. I don't have my samples zipped. They are individual .wav files. I moved them into the diode108 folder, tried both under the Kits, and Samples folder, but I get this error:
No files are available to import.
Place exported kit .ZIP files on DropBox in the Diod - 108/kits folder to import.
Help please
I know the answer to this one!
Put your wav files into the Samples folder.
I think you're now trying to LOAD KIT.
Don't!
Instead, tap on the NAME of a sample all the way down at the bottom of the screen, under all the dials. THAT's the load sample. You can then choose the source Dropbox.
