Just wanted to drop in again and say how much I love Diode's Swing Control and how I wish Gadget's Swing Control was more like it. Thank you!!

Thanks! By the way, there's a fix coming (waiting on Apple's release of 1.1.1) that corrects the swing at the very beginning of the song.

will try midiflow ,elastic and diode later today ,but keep in mind that I had no issues with audio inside audiobus.

You're welcome! Hopefully we can get a kit-sharing community started.

@Diode108 The clock from ElasticDrums is a poor clock source as even at 60bpm the clock was jumping around in Diode-108. Driving both apps with MidiBus or Midiflow was reliable for both. iOS 8.3 on an iPad Air 2 in Audiobus 2.1.13.

Thanks Paul. Maybe the ElasticDrums clock comes in lumpy. I think I'll get it and look at the timestamps on the clock messages. Actually taking a break this weekend though. Family stuff.

I think diode108 does not run in the background like Elastic. But I can drive them in sync both through midiflow ,when loaded on audiobus (keeps diode in the background)

  • Korakios, do you have the BACKGROUND AUDIO switch on (on the SONG page)?

Lol, no I didn't! Found it ,ok! Now I load them both thru midiflow and no audio problems and they both sync.

OK. So the right answer with Elastic Drums is to use a third app for clock, right?

When creating my first custom kit, I've found several small UI glitches:

    1) when renaming a pad (changing voice label), underscores become spaces. I mean it does not substitute them with spaces but rather renders them invisible when you click the name and the onscreen keyboard becomes visible

    2) pad's label is not displayed in uppercase after you load a new sample. Go to another tab and then back to Drum Machine, and only then it becomes uppercased

    3) when you save a new custom kit, it does not have an icon (or displays the icon of the built-in kit you based your custom kit on) until you reload your new kit

    4) when you delete your custom kit, it remains loaded and it's a bit confusing. Maybe it's better to make Diode load one of the built-in kits after deletion of the currently selected kit?

    5) also, I think it should ask the user whether he/she wants to overwrite the already existing kit

As you can see, nothing major. Most users probably wouldn't even notice such small imperfections. But I have a good eye for such things and some people hate me for that. Please, don't hate me :))

  • Thanks yug, we don't hate you, we love you!

  • Spent another 2 hours with Diode and I must say I love it. UI is a little bit slow on my iPad 2 but still pretty comfortable.

Custom kits, midi in, midi learn, Audiobus, ability to rearrange pads/rows... looks like it's got everything I need. Great set of features for an app that's been released just 2 months ago. Keep up the good work, guys!
The only thing I'm missing is midi out

And now about the only thing I don't like - Dropbox permissions. Diode creates his folder in the root Dropbox folder and therefore requires full access to all the files in my DB account. That's not a good practice. Instead, it should use a dedicated app folder (/Apps/Diode-108 instead of /Diode-108). More on the matter: https://www.dropbox.com/developers/reference/devguide
I hope this gets fixed in one of the next versions

Again, great drum machine. Time to delete DM1 and other similar apps that could never satisfy my needs :)

  • I'm getting it now.

Not because I need another drum machine but because I'd like to support the developer that's been residing in this thread every day since launch and responding in every way to all the queries. I also appreciate the dedication towards finding out how to make the sync work. In fact I hope @Diode108 and @Michael get together at some point to swap notes to give us what we've been waiting for since birth of IOS music.

P.s. I see there's no reviews in the UK store. Give them some love guys!

  • Sorry I haven't read the entire thread to check but has anyone managed to slave Diode to loopy? Diode is receiving the tempo information but won't respond to start/stop apologies if this has been already discussed.

Yes, it works brilliantly. Maybe you didn't press play in Diode-108 before using start/stop to control it from Loopy? Have fun :)

  • Cool, yeah @Vecoto got it, thanks. Sync is close to perfect.

Sync can possibly be "fine" even if the numbers you see in Diode are fluctuating wildly. I think the numbers swimming around might unnecessarily disturb people (although it will probably steer people into using more consistent clocks). I probably should smooth out the bpm displayed and instead have a quality-of-clock measure visible somewhere. Or color-code the bpm green, yellow, red.

@Michael is the right one to solve this MIDI sync problem, as he's produced code programmers already respect, and lived the sync nightmare a long time.

Of course, I'm happy to talk with developers writing MIDI clock consumers about my approach. The more sane MIDI apps, the better.

  • @Vecoto I think a lot of people are getting stuck on needing to press Play. We should probably fix that.

I think it's the kind of thing that's easy to remember once you know about it, but yes, if you can make it more automatic that'd be great.

  • It is easy to remember but not quite ideal when playing live.

  • @Diode108 Please do consider adding 'grid-resolution'. I'm personally fed-up with almost every beatbox being limited to 16th note grid :(

The Molten Drum-Machine has a very good and useable way of setting/changing the resolution, it is also track independent. (This can be seen ~30 seconds into the clip).

I've been having a lot of fun with Diobe 108 since the last update which did a great job if addressing sync. In fact Diobe is the best app out there for syncing.

I love easily you can create new patterns with the matrix. Very well set up. The sounds are great too.

    Two questions I have:

    (1) Are there any new sound IAP packs that are going to be released soon?

    (2) I wanted to know about creating and exporting patterns to make audio drum loops. As far as I can tell the best way to do this is with Audiobus because with the export function you have to take the time to trim the loop. Also from what I can tell you need to create a new song with one pattern to get it out of the program and into another app. Is there a way to directly to just a pattern without creating a song?

  • +1 on @Samu's comment about Molten and grid resolution. The best feature of that app is the easy ability to quickly subdivide any beat of any individual instrument into any reasonable number of hits. This makes it trivial to throw in triplet fills to a 4/4 beat, which drummers do all the time, but most drum machines make difficult.

Maybe add a sync start button?

+1 ,and don't forget adding the play/stop button on the audiobus panel!

  • @JohnInBoston, Yeah, I can do triplets in Diode-108. It's not too hard (using the Special FX), but then it's hard to find them later.

  • @mkell242 We don't have any immediate plans for sound packs, but we're likely to add more sounds eventually. We're hoping that people start sharing kits, since it's so easy.

I've thought about building in some loop tool. Possibly that will be easier once 1.1.2 is out with its new start and stop markers in the sound that let you concentrate on working on one part of the song at a time.

We have thought about this. It's a pretty big change, but it would be cool. I definitely see the value.

It's a big change with a big increase in flexibility of the app. It would be ideal for recoding the pads in as near real time as possible. I'd happily pay for the feature to be included ;-)
