When it hits half price...I'm in. Unlikely before Christmas I reckon, but I can wait.
Dubstep could be over by then.
@monzo @Kaikoo I've held off the one eyed beast (Johnny will make a comment on that one! ;-) ), because the demo video was all dub step wobble.
It's an interesting genre but not something I would make on my own for $25. I was wondering if it was good at other types of sounds and genres.
I don't play much wobble things! Monzo has telling it can do lots! I like the bass sounds. Cyclop is very straight forward on design anything you like. I actually find this is the easiest synth to use and to comprehend. Many youtube videos do good job what this is. But I believe there are much, much more than that! Particularlly, this synth can combine and layering well with other synths for many tracks. It can do very commercial type of excitment music! You can use more effects apps to extend what you want because Cyclop actually has very few effects within! This is the best synth I have ever purchased! I also find the presets not so well done; however, it is very comfortable when you do your own sounds!
As @kaikoo says it can do anything really. The dubstep thing has worked against it I think, by overselling that aspect of it they've alienated a lot of potential buyers who aren't into that genre, when the truth is it's actually just a really good, versatile synth, that can also do dubstep due to it's modulation features.
As for the price, it's about the same as a filter IAP for Auria, so extremely good value I'd say. I waited about 8 months for Turnado to go on sale - so for 8 months I went without the best FX on my iPad just to save 6 quid. Looking through their sales history they have sales in the spring, and in October. To be honest even if they cut the price by 50% tomorrow I wouldn't care as I've already had a few days of extra fun with it.
Since getting Cyclop my theory on the dismissive reviews (and even Non-review opinions by people. who. have. never. used. it.) is that many people judge books by covers: Cyclop was to some degree promo'd as a "DUBSTEP WOBBLE MONSTER WITH A VIDEO GAME INSIDE!" which steered peoples impression of what the thing is and the parameters of it's sonic capabilities.
The other thing is the presets: if you're just thumbing through the list the sounds confirm much of the above. Because of this I assume that anyone who says it's "too brash" or EDM etc just hasn't explored patching from scratch.
The first thing I noticed is that I could generate perfectly sexy Sine bass. Then add as much or little texture / grit / chaos / movement / etc on top. People would have you think subtlety wasn't an option and that the user is forced to "Bro" their palette out by the very act of using Cyclop and this is not true.
I watched a (long) tutorial on Cyclop and tried ONE thing demonstrated and that One thing is so pleasing to my ears that I've only done variations of it so far (and we're talking months) .. to say I've not even scratched the surface is an understatement and the fact that variations of one sound / trick / thing has kept me captivated says a lot about the awesomeness that is Cyclop.
@monzo @Kaikoo Thanks for info. I can see it's a must have. One last thing and it's a big deal in iOS: does it sync well with DAWs like Cubasis or Auria (Audio Bus, IAA, virtual MIDI). As we know just because it says it has something doesn't mean it plays well in real life!
Also can you can run other apps with it synced to a DAW and not have it crash or go out of sync? For example have Cyclop on bass, Diode for the drums, and iSem or Tera Synth. Have them all running at the same time playing MIDI tracks Thanks!
I've only got Auria, but that picks it up fine and so do my MIDI apps.
As @proppa says, there's a lot of fun to be had building your own presets and it's dead easy to do. I've just spent the last two hours mucking about, building and saving my own patches (something I never normally do) and enjoyed every second.
This app is the love child of iVCS3 and Thor, abandoned at birth and raised by Egoist.
I never had any crash from Cyclop! Running well on Cubasis Audio and midi! Transport panel for audio recording is there too! I sometimes have Bias Fx on it using AB. You just can not delete the presets that was annoying. Presets system is just not so smooth feeling, that's it! Air1 8.13
Awesome line. Makes it sounds complicated, but that's only because anything with iVCS3 in the sentence makes me afeared. But I'm not looking for reassurance in this case, I get what you mean.
Great! I'm a Cubasis user.
The love child of iVCS Thor, abandoned at birth and raised by Egoist? How can I say no to that? ;-) OK you guys convinced me. Cyclop and I are going to get acquainted.
Hehe! one more little indian!
I've been going through the presets and it sounds impressive. Very powerful. I think Cyclop will always be the lead in every song that it's in.
Heap Big Late-To-The-Party-Buyer Here Captain.
@monzo So first year of college given to Mister Bytes. I would typically spend a good few first hours getting confused and so forth, but must soon wander off to watch Holland vs Japan. It's work. Sort of. Our biggest client is from Holland. Must keep up etc. And after that (if not during) there will be sleeping. What would be kind is if you, or other users, could pass along the Rough Guide Top Five Tips of What I Would Focus On From the Getgo If I was Starting All Over Again. Doesn't have to be five of course.
Think of it as sage advice -bound to be ignored- on his wedding night to the terribly enthusiastic virgin who is, of course, all fingers and thumbs.
@mkell424
This is good! Supple. Add a sequencer and a reverb.
To be honest I'm doing my usual 'lets not bother to read the manual and just twiddle some buttons like' thing, and gradually getting to see what works/doesn't. Tied up with work at the mo but will pass on some things I've learned along the way later.
Last night though I loaded up some of the simpler patches, and then added automation, effects, sequencing etc. Using your own audio is fun too.
@monzo Predictably stayed up late and after an hour just about figured out where the Init patches were
Don't understand how the automation really works yet nor how to bring in audio. Went through the (again predictable) phase of 'oh, this is a waste of money, this is just, I dunno, like Attack but different, a squeak box, could do all this elsewhere etc etc' and then went and wound down making pretty things in iM1, BUT your own enthusiasm (and coming from one so churlish after all persuades me that you have got further up the mountain and the view improves etc. I thank you for that. I'm going out. I may be some time.
We've reached peak dustep now that everyone owns Cyclop. Gonna need to find a new synth now.
@Kaikoo Thanks. Sounds great and looks like it is easy to use. But the best part it's not a wobble!
Actually, You can use TC-data to drive it to another level! Or, use Bias FX to make very interesting differences.
Too lovely little robots, it sounds well. I guess Cyclop needs a special drum pal to sing together! Let's wait Auria Pro to dirve Cyclop!
I am available for Special Drum Pal singing adventures, subject to standard non-disclosure items etc. Cyclop is very confusingly rich and pregnant with possibilities etc.
Never mind, how come you the last dinosaur. Haha, couldn't imagine and comprehend what you will make? "I don't give a damn" remix? Hehe, when 1950s meets 2015!
And I'd been doing so well...
After reading this thread yesterday I ended up buying it. No regrets, I can definitely find a use for this one.
I should be on a commission - I reckon I made as many converts as a Doug vid
@monzo I'm doing my best to hold out. I helped you by making Attack sound less appealing and then you spring this cyclop business on us?
I thought I could resist cyclop. I really did..
You have a USP like no other, built up assiduously over time (very clever brand management Mister Monz....): Be a cynic and a sloth, wait for a long time, sit on many fences, worry, bite nails, whine a little (not too much), almost plunge, prevaricate and then when you're done with that equivocate some, finally dive in. Wait. Be disappointed. Public displays of self-recrimination. Job done. And then....
....on any D-Day cash in on the previous by buying an app, standard delaying, but not too much, and then love it and sit back and listen to the sound of a thousand men jumping off fences and splashing straight into the pool. Kerching Doctor. A fine business plan well-exectued.
Apart from the commission bit.
You did a good job on Attack (and glad I held out as they haven't fixed it yet), I'm not interested in that one at all now. Not sure if I mentioned this before but I really like Cyclop.
I'll use an affiliate link next time. I'm working on hating Attack still so when I get that and love it I'll use it then.
I'm going to say you've found your soul mate and leave it at that.
I love Cyclop.
Here is what I did to properly get a feel for Cyclop.
I went in order thru each preset.
Listening and rating it for myself with the "stars" system.
Along with that, the ones I really liked - I took note and examined the setting and automation used with them.
That way I got a "whole" picture of the app's potential, not a snapshot of my mood and what I stumble upon at the time.
That way I have the star ratings for real reference point as I learned the app inside out.
@RustiK Good comment.
I hafta say that in my first hour of blundering around (Where is that bra strap? Where are my hands?) one of the first things I noted with great appreciation was the filing/rating system. Seems so obvious, but not utilized anything like enough. I wish iM1 (for example) had the same. But then I wish everything had Zilli's pattern thingie. Lord knows if we ever make our own app we're going to have a good list of fundamentals to get started with....
