Like the drumming. Love the hats particularly...

It sounds like a film soundtrack. A good one. It makes me thing of a slow moment in Whiplash or something...

Drumming is definitely my favourite bit... or at least the way it works with everything else. Piano part also sounds pretty good to me.

Anyway - ignore all of that since I already said it's not my thing. And forgive my honesty, too tired to write anything sugar coated :) ...

It requires a bit of courage to be critical, but ultimately I think it provides better feedback, as long as the recipient knows not to take it personally.

  • @Monzo

Weirder than normal :). I like it... the vocal samples are great... It's a like a mellow space jazz story... I'm sure that's what you were going for.

Some lovely high bleepy / glitchy stuff in there. All very restrained and well mixed...

Is that some Phase Rings I hear in there, too?

The kind of string-sounding synth part at 1.40 is great - it starts to come into focus as a sort of jazz / chill out track at this part. then about a minute later its' off again.

    It's very good...

    @Marcel

Pretty lovely, to be honest... the music is great, the singing parts are very delicate and work really well. Overall really enjoyable and I want to play it again (so I will :))

    Only 2 things i'd question.

    1. The end. Needs an end I think...

    2. The spoken parts over the sung parts... not sure they are needed and it kind of broke the spell a little bit for me.

I like the start of this track, the drums are pretty good (if a little soft maybe). I like the electric piano type patch. And the flute.

I guess I feel a little bit that as it progresses it kind of meanders and doesn't particularly head anywhere. It could maybe do with a definite quiet bit, build up, climax etc. Some more obvious structure for the listener. That said, the end where the new bassline comes in is interesting and I like the double time rhythm thing going on there.

The overall feeling is it's a very "synthy" style of drum and bass with some interesting stuff in there.

  • @u0421793

It does it's job... it's pretty obviously saying "the robots are coming and you better be scared".

I can't, to be honest, think of much else to say about that 12 seconds :).

Nice keys... that electric piano part is the best thing i've heard from your tracks to so far I think... really like it. The flute's pretty good in this one too.

It's a nice piece of chilled out music. I think the drums could be a bit more polished. There's kind of a drum roll that happens quite a lot but it doesn't roll up to anything (it just stops), it's used too much and it feels a bit robotic in my right ear :). I prefer the jazzier drums used elsewhere.

There's not a particularly obvious hook or verse / chorus thing going on - or "build up / break down" - so again, I'd probably say that it might be good to sit back and look at the overall structure of the track and identify and emphasise some different parts.

  • @AFitz63

Short and sweet. The horns/brass are nicely played. It sounds very nicely mixed and generally well put together.

Feels like one of those short tracks on a soundtrack album for a film you haven't seen that's called something mysterious that relates to the film like "Stephen leaves" :).

Would have liked to it have been more of a full length track TBH...

  • @Igneous1

I like the mood. I like the slow build up. I like the hand drum feel of the drums. I like the little touches like the "field recording" type noises mixed in during the first minute.

The last quarter could maybe have had a bit more to it... Feels like it peters out a little at the end. Good stuff though.

Hi, I am happy to hear you like my song! :) Thanks for your comment.

Indeed the end is not good, you are right about that. But I keep it that way, cause I have finished it, and it is no big issue.

The spoken words: I have the opposite opinion, I think it is rather good, and adds an extra dimension to the whole thing. But no problem that you don't like that, no problem at all, as a matter of fact I am happy that you would like it more without it, cause I thought the spoken words were essential. But not to everyone I know now.

Just after I finished the song I was not happy about the singing part, but after a while I have grown more fond of it. It is not perfect, but it is not that bad either.

@Igneous1 The sound is really good! And the composition/concept is interesting. Not my type of music, but nevertheless I enjoyed listening to it. The layering is really good. One point of constructive critisism: a little more variation in the composition would lift it in my opinion.

Thanks Matt, yeah I think I was after a loose, spacey jam type thing. It originally started with the Elastic Drums rhythm but I drifted off from that and added some Venusian Jazz. The lead synth bit you liked is iFretless bass - using one of the synth bass sounds.

  • Thanks for the comments guys, all useful stuff that will keep me going for a while.

This is especially important for me as this is precisely what I was trying to do. In fact rather than continue (or before I continue), I was thinking of adding film as I'm very interested in making soundtracks.

Nice sounds and structure, I particularly like the Tangerine Dream-esque (Force Majeure) sequence driving it along.

Here's my entry, it's called 'Discerning Space'. It was created entirely in Gadget and mastered in Final Touch.

Like this one too - nice rhythm - subtle beats but they really fit well into the overall groove.

Honestly... not really my thing... Felt quite long to listen to. It's great guitar playing but I just felt it meandered a bit and with no lyrics or anything I got a little bit bored TBH. I preferred your other tracks - they had a bit more bite to them - or something.

However, I liked the bit where the guitar was kind of screaming (the harmony you put in)...

Anyway - ignore all of that since I already said it's not my thing. And forgive my honesty, too tired to write anything sugar coated :) ...

Thanks for your honesty, @Matt_Fletcher_2000 :) We can't all like all types of music. No problem with that :)
Glad you liked my guitar playing anyway :)
Took me a while to find out which song you were commenting on as it was quite a few pages back and I had forgotten I had posted it in this thread lol :)

Thank you, Matt! I've always been a fan of active drummers and do my best to compose that way.

Funny you mention the hats - the ol' quick aside hi-hat clasp is one of the only parlor tricks I know when I play acoustic drums (usually for a glorious 8-12 bars before I crash and burn spectacularly ;)

Looks like you're doing what I need to be doing and catching up on the thread.

  • @bsantoro two entries in one month!! C'mon man, ur making us look bad!:D
I enjoyed your track mate.i loved the variations on the beat and where u placed them in the mix.i loved the sounds I felt like I was watching a scene in a movie driving through a city at night...or something!:) now the only thing I might say is you may have been going for a slightly loose playing style and forgive me if I'm wrong but there seemed to be parts of the first 90 seconds that seemed a little off beat? Again, I may be wrong as it's 1am & Jazz is my wife's thing not mine.
Anyway good stuff man...& please no more tracks this month!:D

  • @fitz nice job mate! Like bsantoro's track it felt like part of a soundtrack.one day I hope to get to grips with Gadget.i know what u mean about having lots of ideas and little time! I think u have made a good choice to kind of go with one app and attack those ideas as I've spent many hours literally listening to presets from the bajillion apps that I have and getting nothing done!!

  • @Igneous1 Like it. Good stuff. I'm going to be a hard-ass though and say that to me it's not the sum of its parts somehow. AND that's a thumbs -up which means I like the rhythm, the sounds, the layering especially, but I wanted to go somewhere and I didn't. Like your mother used to say; I wouldn't care if I didn't care :) Seriously though, good work. Now I want to hear that quality in a piece of work I become emotionally attached to...

  • @Matt thanks for listening and for your generous comments.trust me my next track should have plenty for u to help me out with as I'm cocking up my musical ideas as we speak!!:D

  • This is a redo from my previously submitted piece; thanks to the constructive criticism from you all on this forum. BeatHawk was used to create the drum parts. SynthMaster was used for all the rest of the parts. Recorded into Cubasis. I did a lot of tweaking of levels and timing in Cubasis.

  • edited June 2015

@Igneous1 That's a very good track, I like the slightly unusual rhythm and the constant evolution of the instrumentation, sounds and melodies.

The only minor crit I have is that it would be good to hear some more complex melodies evolve, using longer phrases and/or more notes. But it's only a minor thing as there is already a lot going on with the intertwining and evolving sounds.

Good production and choice of patches too.

Definitely one of my favourite entries this month, along with JohnnyGoodyear and LostBoy85.

  • @bsantoro the new version feels much more dynamic and interesting, with more variation - I think it's a big improvement.

  • Many thanks to everyone who has commented on my track !

Yes, it's a primarily rhythmic thing really and I take on board the comments regarding it possibly needing some development towards the end. I had a lot of 1 bar scenes that were duplicated and added subtle changes scene by scene.

For anyone interested, I used 15 tracks in Gadget - including the expansion gadgets:
Montreal (2 of), Glasgow, Alexandria and Darwin (2 of) and it ran to 55 scenes. The limiter was turned off and I lowered the output master level to avoid clipping - leaving level maximising to the mastering stage.

Having spent a fair bit of time now in Gadget, I can see that some way of dealing with large numbers of scenes regarding song arrangement would be very welcome. !

    Ahhhh. Basslines!

Always the toughest bit to get right.

Too heavy, too soft or just plain wrong sounding!!!

I have some time this evening so I'm going to need to knuckle down if I'm going to get this track finished. And it's under 4 mins long.

Four minutes? War and Peace mate. Knuckle down and bring forth......

  • Cheers Mr Googear,

SOTMC was a good 'nudge' to get me to finish a single track from the many half-finished things I was working on.
    A good exercise, methinks !

  • See you next month Mister Igneous. I know I'm taking a bit of a flyer assigning you a gender, but the hard rock/doberman combo smells like boy so I'm going with that.... :)

Safe bet, there is a distinct shortage of ladies around these parts. Apart from BiancaNeve who I presume to be female I can't really think of any others....
