See you next month Mister Igneous. I know I'm taking a bit of a flyer assigning you a gender, but the hard rock/doberman combo smells like boy so I'm going with that.... :)

Yes, I am a feller, but don't be fooled my pooch and the heavy stuff, I mostly make wistful, airy music primarily :)

  • @richardyot Oh there's a few, for sure, but can't say I blame them for keeping themselves largely androgynous, and why not.

Knew a woman down in Mexico who bred dobermans, had them by the hatful. Called them all doberpuffs...

  • Kind of early for my submission. Went with a slightly more straightforward composition this time. The xylophone/marimba-ish part was supposed to be a guide for a vocal part but the instrumental grew on me and I didn't get any lyrics together on time. Maybe next month I will submit a "real" song ;)

@Jocphone What machines did you use for this? Have to say I don't really get on with the atonality (this is a word I use when I mean 'I don't really like all those black notes' etc), but more than almost anything this piece makes me feel old in that 'is this what the kids are listening to today Virginia?' way. And thus I excuse myself from being a reliable witness (as if I ever was).

Johnny, I have no better idea of what the kids are listening too than you.

If you give it a couple of listens you'll find it's not nearly as hostile as it first seems. I've been wandering round the house humming the marimba melody for a few days now.

It seems to me that we get all this sonic power for so little outlay, may as well explore a bit.

To answer your question, it's all gadget again apart from a little Thor trumpetty elephant sound near the end which I chopped up in Abu.

  • My song of the month... it's still June in some parts of the world :).

Gadget. With a little spinkling of Cylop (just a 1 bar break), Sunriser (extra little stabs of sub bass grind in places) and some TC-11 effects at the start and end. Plus a vocal sample mashed a little bit in Samplr. Main drums are samples I bought in.

Apart from that it's all Gadget. I'm quite pleased with the main bass patches which were made in Brussels and Phoenix respectively. I also used TC-Data to play some of the pads more 'expressively' which worked out ok. Lots of Chiang Mai and KIngston for pads and effects in this one...

I HAVE listened to it again and am still confused, but think that that might actually be a good thing. Why shouldn't I be confused? Why should I get/approve of everything that folks make? I am a contrary bugger I know (no!), but am beginning to like this track because I don't like it. Or don't understand it or don't get it. Have scheduled to listen to it again at 6 in the morning and see if I start humming the marimba line :)

  • Still June in Maine Matt.

This is very sweet, almost delicate. Of course you somehow missed the languid female vocal that you surely meant to add in there somewhere. You adept-ness with Gadget is becoming increasingly fluid. Impressive. I will admit to being somewhat stuck on the narrative/storyline train and while I can impose some on this fellow with his one word and tomorrow, I still want more, to make sense of things somehow I guess. But, as I was muttering to @Jocphone about just now, perhaps that kind of editorial feedback should just come in the 'it's me, not you' section. Of course if I were writing my thesis on this I would ramble on about how you are probably cocking a snook at everyone wanting meaning by offering 'just one word', but I don't think that's your intent...

One of the emerging things about SOTMC (to me anyways) is how it kind of transmutes us all into singer-songwriters in one form or another. Required to fill in all the different blanks a band or some other sort of collaboration more commonly results in. Still like it though and still like this also.

Ha ha thanks Johnny. I was just hoping my monthly love letter to the forum might warm at least one heart..

@Matt_Fletcher_2000 only a first listen, while still getting used to these miracle Chinese earphones, but I must say i prefer your tracks when they are a bit raw like this (relatively speaking). Will try to give better feedback when I do the mammoth listening job of all this months submissions though

  • @Jocphone what shocked me the most in your song this month was the tunefulness of the bass line, you must be slipping, because there was a bit of a melody in there :)

I think a lot of the elements worked quite well individually, but didn't necessarily mesh together all that well - that may well be intentional on your part, but like last month I'm not clear what you're trying to communicate.

I spent part of my youth listening to Einsturzende Neubaten and the Butthole Surfers (I'm sure mr Monzo is probably familiar with the former), I even played guitar in a noise band, in which I played scratches, scrapes and feedback over a more structured bass and drums, so I'm not uncomfortable with the weird stuff, but I think that the music must communicate something, and it's that something that I am trying to find in your tunes. Maybe it will click for me at some point.

  • @MattFletcher2000 It's interesting watching your evolution, because it's clear that you're becoming more demanding on yourself, and the music is definitely improving as a result IMO.

I really like the melodic chime in the first half of the song, it works really well to give some interest and something for the ears to latch on to. And even though the melody is there, it isn't overly pretty so it doesn't take anything away from the grittiness of the music. For me this is the right balance between menace and melody, because without that melodic interest the tune would be far less compelling to listen to.

The second half of the song is darker, without that lead part, but again that adds variation and it only enhances the mood. The structure and evolution of the song is great, works very well. The only criticism is that maybe there could be more variety in the vocal samples.

I listened all the way to the end. I like the structure — the overall map of what occurs when. Stuff happened just about the time I would have liked stuff to happen, and stuff came along as a surprise, just about the time I was open to a surprise.

@Jocphone - some nice rich sounds. Like the marimba... you can't beat a good marimba.

It reminds me a bit of Fever Ray (Swedish band) until it gets more techno-like.

The really mad bit at about 2.20-2.40 lost me a bit - but apart from that I thought it was pretty good.

Have now listened twice. I think it's my favourite track of yours actually. The mix of sounds is good and I like the slow groove of it.

I guess the only criticism would be that it feels a bit 'slight' - (guess because it's quite short and doesn't have a really stand out hook or progression or words or samples). To me it's a good instrumental piece that might easily be the sound track to something (an advert?). Baring the slightly over the top bit (IMO) at 2.20...

All sounds nicely mixed etc... What did you make it in?

  • By the way, can anyone guess who the sample is on my track? Cupcake for the winner...

  • Nice tune matt, kick and snare really tight and sharp

The mid range bass sweep is sweet too

Liking the bleeps also, a couple more like that, we've enough for the mix I promised!

Very nice Matt, I particularly like the bass. Clever percussion too - I can't get my head around that stuff.

I like it, it has a Residents feel to me, I can almost hear their vocals on this.

I look forward to your entries, a nice bit of alternative twitchy twitching sideways wonderment.

Sorry for not staying 'on brand' Richard ;)

The meshing thing is an interesting notion and I guess by trying to plough my own furrow, as it were, that I will run the risk of making things that sound wrong in some sense. When I first got my hands on synths I found that I was effectively just recreating the popular beat combo of drums, bass, guitar, lead etc.. and that felt pretty unsatisfying, that I wasn't using the opportunity provided by these new instruments.

It sounds like we were knocking around in the same era and probably following a lot of the same bands. The JAMC had a big influence on my thinking for a while and it seemed that 6 minutes of howling guitar feedback over some repetitive drumming was all that a song needed. I'm not sure I can put words to what I am trying to communicate other than the playfulness and joy of exploring musical boundaries.

At any rate, I'm not trying to create a lasting legacy with these songs. I wouldn't sweat it too much if they don't get you fired up the way they do for me. The great thing about the SOTMC is that we are different and we take the time to appreciate each others efforts even if they are outside our normal choice of music.

    Thanks Matt,

like I said, this was supposed to be a track with vocals but marimba is so delicious and it fits the current UK weather in the evening, so I left it.

Don't know Fever Ray, will have to take them for a spin.

Funny you should mention the mix. I actually spent a bit more time trying to get to grips with what all those sliders and buttons do in Audio Mastering and took a little of the harshness out of it (not too much mind) Then again maybe it's the new magic earphones..

Other than that it's all pretty stock Gadget, more tracks than usual and the little Thor trumpetty elephant sound in Abu for the madder bit that you mentioned ;)

I get that, and doing something original is a worthwhile pursuit - just don't forget to occasionally entertain the listener. :) Tease us with a pretty melody before unleashing the madness (actually that's more or less the direction your song for this month is going in).

It entertained me, we all like different things.

Don't know if I've ever taken the time to listen to the Residents. Heard them mentioned tons of times. Probably should rectify that.

Thanks Monzo. I'm collecting all these descriptions for my first album release!

Not denying that - but feedback has to come from a personal perspective. I try and say what I think, everyone is free to disregard the feedback they get, but at the same time there has to be room for criticism without offense being taken (or deliberately intended).

...ok,put me in coach!!:) So here's a song that I finished the vocals last week (still counts right?) I'm running a bit ahead of myself this month but it's cool as it buys me more time for next months song.
So this one is arranged and inspired by the 80's retro pack in Novation launchpad. Its good,CHEESY,80's fun.If all the guys from the Big Bang Theory were to write a love song this may be a close representation!:D
I will submit songs where I actually do all the music from scratch but this one for me was just about challenging myself to write words that I've never used in a song before to what I think is an awesome sound pack in the Novation app.
Thanks for setting up this club Richard.
...takes his place on the front line...draws his sword...screams "FREEDOM"...charges..

Brilliant and very polished! 80's with some nice, modern flourishes. The hooks are great. If I had any suggestion, it would be that the arrangement could use a little "breathing room" -- more times when certain instruments take a break so other parts can be heard better. Also, the fadeout is a bit abrupt, but that is nit-picking to the extreme.

    Very nice job!

  • Thanks very much @thus!!

@Matt_Fletcher_2000,Loved the bass in your track mate.it really made it for me.Your style of music is not what I normally listen to so I'm in no position to offer any critique but One day for fun I would love to try and write something to one of your pieces,if u were up for it?:)

  • @jocphone I enjoyed this one a lot more than last months mate.i loved the break at 1.30ish and then a good strong finish.Who doesn't love Marimbas right?:D some cool little additions at the end as well.
Again same as Matt it's not my usual cup of tea but as a fellow iPad warrior I appreciate how much time, effort and energy goes into these songs of ours.I mean,we're all writing for ourselves anyway right??:D unless someone wants to start a new brill building era?! Haha! I'm rambling I know but I'm enjoying listening to stuff outside of my box & im desperately trying to figure out how to be a good critique of such stuff...il get there...bloody hell its hot in the UK today!!!! Let me know if u hear the ice cream man ok....99's are on me!!:D
