It would be used mostly for sends, so that I don't have to bake and automate all the effects before I export tracks into my DAW from Drambo or have to repurchase the same effects on the desktop which isn't possible in some cases. I'd save the preset in the plugin, and then recall it in an AUM session thats hooked up with the sends in Ableton where I do the automation. Typically 6 stereo sends that have to flow in and out of the iPad digitally.
The other solution which might be less of a headache is limiting myself to effect plugins that exist on both platforms and just purchase them for the desktop too, price wise it would be almost the same.
In 44.1/48 khz you can run up to 20 mono channels (10 stereo) between the devices.
If one device is only sender and the other only receiver, this means 20 channels can be sent but in this case the sender cannot receive anything.
If send/receive are evenly distributed between devices, it means each device can send/receive 10 channels.
Any combination will fit, as long as the sum doesn‘t exceed 20 mono channels.
You can combine mono/stereo channels any way you like.
Yeah, the routing is fairly flexible which is the main advantage of it.
Thanks, that's plenty. To make it work I'll need the iconfig tool? Or is it possible with Auracle?
What about OS updates for iconfig and Auracle? How quickly do they appear after a new OS release from Apple?
Doesn‘t seem to matter much.
I‘m running iConfig 4.2.7 from 2017 on a MacMini M1 (Monterey)
iConnectivity have long given up on iConfig, but released the source into public domain.
It‘s continued as ReConfig4Audio on GitHub and also available (free) on the appstore.
iConfig should be used on MacOS or Windows, ReConfig has stabilized the IOS version significantly. You absolutely need one of these for routing.
Auracle is a piece of crap imho, and doesn‘t do the interface justice at all.
As mentioned frequently:
iConfig is kind of difficult to understand due to it‘s terminology and (partly) it’s design.
But it‘s use is actually simple... and it‘s worth the effort to learn.
My MacMini M1 runs Sonoma. Just switched recently from an old Haswell Hackintosh with Big Sur.
Allright, if someone can confirm that it works with Sonoma without problems I'll get one in the coming weeks.
Lol. And it seems that it's also lacking support for Sonoma, Ventura is the most recent version it supports.
Kinda strange that there is no competition with similar features yet. Is this due to patents?
Yeah, without it it seems that it would be more of a paperweight.
Definitely no patents. These dudes just knew how to program a microcontroller and about midi (there‘s a full sysex documentation for the interface)
Nerds in the most positive sense
I have the iCA4+ for about a decade now and consider it one of my most sophisticated devices.
I suspect that making the device a slave to two USB hosts, smoothly passing data between them, is a bit complicated, and not in too much demand. They need to have a decent processor in there to handle the USB interfaces and shuffle the buffers around.
I think there was a specific chip they used to enable the dual USB hosts in the discontinued model 4+ before the 4c. It was discontinued because the chip was no longer going to available.
We think of ourselves and our specialized needs as a significant market segment sometimes. We're really just a tiny niche. 😉
Too rich for my blood, but I'm happy to see iConnectivity Audio gets it though.
@kirmesteggno I can confirm that the iConnectivity iConfig app works on Sonoma on an M1 Mac. I use it daily. The graphics are glitchy in places, but it all works as intended:
Edit: ReConfig4Audio (the iPad app) is also available in the Mac App Store and runs on the Mac.
Thanks a lot for all the info folks. Now I'm thinking about a good USB-Hub strategy between the iConnect4c, the MacMini and the 9th gen iPad with Lightning, currently I'm just using a Dell monitor as a hub with the MacMini.
The idea was to get one of those stackable dock ones like Qwiizlab to save some space on the desk but use it with the iPad and 4c instead.
What is the right combination to use?
The ipad 9th gen also came with a Lightning to USB-C cable which works for charging and IDAM when connected to the TB ports ont e MacMini. I can't use that cable and plug it into the 3.0A port of the ICA 4C can't I?
Some iConnectivity models came with a special Lightning cable that could charge the Lightning iPad as well as providing the USB connection. This was clearly described in the documentation.
If your iConnectivity device only has a normal USB port, you will not be able to charge the Lightning iPad with the USB connection alone. You will need the newer "USB 3.0 Camera Adapter" which has a separate Lightning charge port alongside the USB port.
It's good they open sourced the iconfig software.
I've just found this Linux and Windows app for desktop control which seems a good alternative for using the stock iconfig app, not sure of compatibility with 4C.
https://github.com/dehnhardt/iconnconfig
maybe there are also other versions available, not sure....
if you go to releases it's there under assets:

Yeah it seems like the cable came with the older version from 2014.
I'm curious about the included USB-C to USB-A adapter of the 2021 version visible in the pic I've posted, if this thing can put through the charging power to the iPad using the single adapter, or if I need the other adapter below and connect a separate power source.
Are USB hubs connected to the USB-A Host port of the ICA4c (2021) accessible from both Mac and iPad?
Can I connect a SSD to the USB-A Host port on the back of the ICA 4c directly? In the manual there's only a word about USB MIDI devices, not other USB peripherals. If I can't connect other devices with additional storage the whole idea won't work.
So basically by adding the Iconnect I have to give up external storage options while It's connected. That's a dealbreaker unfortunately.
You cannot charge a Lightning iPad from USB-C Power Delivery, or from a USB-A connector plugged into a Lightning adapter. You cannot push power "uphill", from device to host computer with any conventional USB connection; Power Delivery is a special feature of USB-C. As I already said, you need the "USB 3.0 Camera Adapter", which is the lower one in your picture, with the separate power connector.
I don't immediately recognize the the upper adapter in your picture, or the connector in the hand (looks like USB-B printer connector). If you can provide a link to that upper adapter, I can tell ypu exactly what it can do.
The upper one is this one: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD821AM/A/lightning-to-usb-camera-adapter
I also own the USB-C to Lightning cable that came with my 9th gen iPad, and this one can push power into my ipad and transmit data at the same time when plugged into the MacMini.
I still have the older USB-A to Lightning from my old iPad Air 2 which doesn't work with the 9th gen.
I'd need a hub between the iPad and iConnectivity and thought that the 4c has one built in. If I can use another hub between the 4C and the ipad it could still work out, but so far all the info says that it needs a direct connection through Apple adapters.
That adapter cannot charge the iPad. You need the newer one with the extra Lightning power input.
