Song of the Month Club - September

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, is often the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. Instrumentals are very welcome, and songs with vocals are especially encouraged, so if you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

Another catchy little number from myself. All done in Gadget, with some crafty time signature changes towards the end. As usual, repeated listenings are recommended. (Mastered on the Desktop this time)

    Critical Mass

  • @Igneous1 A lot going on in that piece, definitely very musically inventive with one melodic theme succeeding another in constant succession. It has a definite prog-rock flavour in that sense, with the constant shifting of musical parts.

As a result though it feels restless, and doesn't settle - it might have benefited from some kind of recurring pattern thrown in occasionally to anchor it down, because as it stands I'm definitely going on a journey, but I don't know where.

There are some very strong melodies in there, I really like the pentatonic melody that comes in at 20 seconds, it would have been great to hear that one again later in the track - but there are so many interesting sounding parts in there that could have been used more (the section at 1.20 is another candidate).

There are also lots of interesting dynamic changes going on.

Production-wise the only (subjective) comment is that the drums might be mixed a bit low, but then that does allow space for the melodic content to take prominence.

It's definitely a very creative and musical piece IMO though, but I would (personally) prefer just a little more repetition in there for my ears to settle on.

  • Ok, posted this a few days ago but didn't get much comments but loads of listens

So rip into this..just ask you actually listen all the way through cause it's seven minutes long

A very deep atmospheric progressive tech trance track that swiftly changes mood halfway through into proper dark techno then builds again

Absolutely needs to be listened to all the way through for context

    100 percent gadget as always

    Thanks for your ears..

  • @richardyot

Cheers for really taking the time to give my track a listen. I know my stuff isn't really your thing, but good on yer for giving it a go !

I think you're right, it isn't 'settled' as such, but I actually quite like that element of things and I did try to give it more in the way of development as a composition. The drums are two instances of London and one of Abu Dhabi, so getting similar levels from each of them was a bit of a challenge.

  • @touchconspiracy I will have a listen tomorrow, but you do realise that the main reason you don't get many comments is because you never take the time to comment on other people's work, right? It's a two way street and so far I don't think I have seen you make a single comment on someone else's work in the several months you have been posting on SOTMC.

You can't expect everyone to take the time to listen to your tracks and comment on them if you don't reciprocate.

like the track but dont like the drums at all. They need to be less cheesy and less hand clap for me. musically though i like it :) The build up and flow of the track is modern and has reminded me of the days I spent at the Brixton Academy at raves and trance evenings off my face :) Those days are long gone for me now but thanks for the reminder. Keep em coming!
    cheers.

    @Igneous1
Ryuichi Sakamoto would love this back in the 80s 90s. needs David Bowie or maybe David Sylvian to add some vocals and its a winner!!
seriously like it and I love the busyness of it. Soundtrack music to my ears :)
Added an edit because I played it several times, seriously good track, thank you!

  • Woah

Maybe u need to review what you said because I do get comments and quite a few on this song of the month thread, I've had positive and negative feedback and took it well, responded as much as possible. I have also commented on a few tracks, especially those that are made in gadget.

I don't have time to listen to everything and, if I listen to something I don't like I would rather not critique publicly cause that is simply not my style, nor would I put myself in a position to advise someone how to improve their work to be honest, sometimes it creates bad feeling and I'd rather avoid it and keep silent.

Suggest you back track if you have time and you will see that I've comments on a few tracks from time to time.

But to be honest, I don't like "soundcloud tag", ie I'll listen to you if you listen to me, it is not my kind of vibe, it's too conditional, and if I'm even more honest, I just put my stuff out there and see what happens, and I'm not bothered either way. It's a fun thing but not at all the kind of professional atmosphere I'm looking for ( not these threads, I'm referring to soundcloud in general ), and wish that there was a alternative to soundcloud, a kind of more interactive bandcamp per se.

For me this is not a hobby, it's my life, music.....

I put stuff in here just to contribute, like I ocassionally start interesting threads.

To just give something in a non expectant manner

However, I was referring to the track "the realm of surrender " that I posted as an independent thread a few days ago because you didn't yet start the September thread. That had hardly any comments but my previous independent thread about my track "I behold the truth in her eyes" had a lot of comments and all of them positive , and it's had a decent amount of listens too. And I replied and thanked everyone for their comments, as I do on your threads.

Perhaps I'm not interactive enough on your threads, sorry about that, I just don't have the time.

With that in mind mate, I'll post seperatly from your threads but still read them and comment if I see/ hear something that catches my attention

    Cheers

@touchconspiracy I think you misunderstand me, this isn't about egos - I don't consider this to be "my" thread, it's a collective effort.

You are welcome to post your tracks here, but you should take the time to comment on other people's work. You say you have done this, but honestly I just can't recall seeing it on SOTMC. If I was feeling really petty I could trawl through previous months to check, but it's not worth it. I am willing to bet a handsome sum you made absolutely no comments about anyone else's work in the August thread FWIW.

Anyway, I'm not interested in a bun fight. You can take what I've said on board constructively or not, it's up to you.

  • @Igneous1 Kept my attention throughout. Great groove. The flow works for me.. Will listen again.

@touchconspiracy I was one of the listeners on the other post. Always look forward to your tracks and contributions. Great track. I too am not the greatest contributor but enjoy listening to the contribution and learning from other's posts. hope you and @richardyot go easy on each other

@dblonde great track and mix. I especially get into it at the 2 min mark with the guitar. Sweet. Great tribute for your friend.

  • Not an ego thing mate

Just stating facts, you clearly said I never contributed comments, not true, maybe not in August but in previous months I know for sure I did

In others words it was a mild accusation not based on fact

I'm not interested in a fight either mate and as I said earlier, because I cannot commit to listening to a lot of stuff and commenting on everything , it's only fair that I don't post on these threads if this expectancy is there. Just wouldn't be right would it lol

It's no big deal, no harm done, no fight

    It's all good

  • @dblonde Smooth and wistful. No knock on your own go at it, but I'd be interested in hearing the sax mixed/effected a little different. I think the Vocal Live doubling etc sounds great when it does, but in some spots it maybe draws the wrong kind attention. Just my feel. I really liked the guitar and the whole live/playing vibe, which I think the bass really helps promote. Nice nod to your mate Alf.....

It was later revealed that @dblonde did, in fact, make good use of WIST.

  • @Igneous1 I agree with richardyot that track is a bit chaotic structure wise. I love stuff that is unpredictable and chaotic in structure but for me the choice of sounds needs to be a bit more chaotic/raw for that structure to work. The sounds are a bit generic sounding so it doesnt work as well as it might if you went as out there with sound choice as with structure.

@touchconspiracy I liked the productionon your track, some of the sound choices a bit ravey for my taste. I think there is a really solid 4 min track waiting to be born out of the 7 min version. The middle to end sections were bits i liked most

@dblonde Great laid back vibe, very nice guitar work. My only constructive comment would be to maybe slip some more drum variation in (as you have at the bit at 1.44)

Interesting point. The project of which this track is a part of is intended to be a primarily composition driven thing. Yes, I'm using Gadget module presets, but I've chosen those particular sounds to 'construct' how a particular band might be comprised (if that makes sense) i.e. - fretless bass, rhodes, ethnic percussions, pads etc. Sometimes the sound of a clean strat or an chorused electric piano is exactly the sound that is needed for a particular part.

Incidentally, sound design is something that I've done for years, but making interesting sounds wasn't what was needed for this project - it's more about sounding like a coherent musical ensemble - like Japan / Sakamoto, as some astute people here have pointed out :)

  • Hi folks!
This is the current playlist for Synthmaster iOS player contest. Please listen to the songs and vote for the ones you like. Thanks alot!

  • Ok, the word gadget got my attention here..

Nice vibes, not my usual kind of music but it has flow, overall mix sounds clear and good, wish drums were a bit louder though. I think the preset choices work really well. Sounds like a lot of effort and careful listening went into it

  • Thanks !

I'm an old raver though, I guess one will always find reference to that vibe in most of my work

Seven minutes too long you think? I could condense it, but the problem then is that it loses progression..I'll see how it feels if I trim it a bit...

  • @touchconspiracy I like the track overall, some nice tuneful hooks in there. I would add my voice to the comments aobut the drums and the length though, the drums are quite harsh sounding and the kick/snare combo could be more interesting, it's just a straight ahead backbeat, which does propel the music forward, but could be more interesting and varied IMO.

The breakdown from 3.30 to 5.50 doesn't really add that much to the track for me, maybe if there was more going on it might be better, but as it stands I think the tune could be much shorter and be better for it.

But musically I enjoyed the synth riffs and it didn't sound too retro for me.

  • @dblonde nice piece with a very jazzy feel, lots of complex and competent playing going on there. Maybe the bass feels a bit disconnected from the drums - not sure if that's a mix issue or the playing.

Some nice improvisation, I really felt the piece getting stronger towards the end with some really interesting rhythms played on the guitar, it feels much more purposeful from around 2.20 onwards.

I guess it might sound a little "muzak"-y, but that's always a danger with softer jazzy pieces. Some great musicianship on display though, both rhythmically and melodically inventive.

Guess I agree. This started life as an acoustic solo piece that eventually got the time of day. Thanks for the guitar compliments, it's my misspent youth shinning through- 30yrs of playing and I think I have finally some feel for melody etc. :)

Yes the bass sits on top of the sample loops and so it's a compromise.

Thanks for taking time to respond.

Nice, got a bit of an 80's prog feel to it, complex but not unnecessarily so. Only critique I'd add is that I find the bass cuts out short - it uses a natural bass sound, but it doesn't decay naturally as a real bass would.

  • @touchconspiracy said:

Good sounds, nice and clean - probably a bit straightforward for my kidneys but nicely done. As a feedback thing, I'd recommend a few changes in the rhythm - I think the straight consistent beat all the way through puts me off a bit. Some variation would blow my skirt up.

Top quality recording and playing, nice to hear 'real' instruments. Reminds me if the latest Gong album, minus Daevid Allens vocals and madness.

Thanks monzo I love real instruments also, it's a great base for building an authentic sound.

  • Thanks for listening
I thought I did a few variations with the snares and hats along the way..

It is a "progressive track" though, and generally they build slow without abrupt changes and are generally longer
