Thanks, but I'll not blow your skirt up lol

Second comment about the beats being straight forward..there are some changes along the way

Can you give an example of a track of this genre with intense beat change ups?

I'm kind of old school, don't spend much time listening to new stuff

I don't really do genre's - it's all music to me. It's not the style, or even the sound of the drums, I'd just like a bit more variation. With real drums every sound is different, so it's tricky getting a fixed, sampled electronic beat to hold interest. I guess breaks, layering, FX, and other tricks to add more movement and depth would add a but more spunk to the thing and reduce the flatness of him. Or even some recorded live drums.

RECORDED LIVE DRUMS? JG goes and has a little sit down....

  • @Igneous1 Hey man,I've given your track three listens and I like it! If I'm honest though it maybe had toooo many things going on in it so that now as I sit and think about it I can't focus on one particular hooky bit I liked best.I don't make your type of music so please don't take me on my word. However I like a lot of variety within a track which yours does really well, but personally I just need it to come back to a main hook every now and then:)

  • I understand what you are saying here, I have dnb tracks on my soundcloud..but I feel our tastes/ expectations of music differ somewhat..but cheers for listening!

  • Sideliner comment...as you may be aware, your posts are public...people might listen. That's my intro to stating that I enjoy these threads, even if I don't participate. The contributions have been wonderful. Some dissension periodically, as would be expected, but I've learned a lot from many...most of you. Tip-o-the hat and please keep it going...many great songs. I hope to contribute at some point...once time and creativity meet.

  • @funjunkie27 You know the Truman Show, right? This is actually just like that. We only do this for you. You're the whole ball game. Thank Bejesus that you do wander by and listen occasionally. Some folks were losing heart :)

And, on a slightly more serious note, we do have your name in our little book as regards possible future contributors (it's really just like a cult :).

The Orb would be a good example, probably an extreme one, but they do some very interesting things with their beats. I remember getting Orbis Terrarium when it came out, and being blown away by how everything evolved....

  • Alex Patterson is a genius..few can come up to his standard..

    Same as FSOL life forms...

They call it "brain dance" :)

Hi - Long time listener, first time participant here... Originally planned to upload a song I was struggling with with hopes of getting some help from the community and develop it further, but think I will try that next month and instead share a song I came up with and completed with little struggle. It's a bit higher tempo than I'm used to working at (103bpm) - most of my stuff fits in the trip-hop, chillout, downtempo, groove category and is in the 70-90bpm ranges. I deliberately have been trying to make stuff a bit faster in tempo lately and this is one of the results. Not sure what category I'd put this one in. I'm very happy with the end track - only thing I would possibly change would be some EQ'ing on some of the synths after the breakdown as things get busy and maybe a tad muddy. Anyways, here it is:

    m

I've already checked out some of the entries (this month and in the past) and hope to comment on many of them soon - I have trouble commenting on songs much more than "I like this" or "I like that part" but i'll try and make an effort.

@Halftone Love piano, but was surprised when it came in as it wasn't the instrument I expected. Sounded very mellow, not apologetic, but certainly lowkey. Some of us hereabouts are always talking/asking for vocals and this sounds like the perfect canvas for 'the rest of the song', especially the first half.

I like the tempo, what did you put this together with, app-wise?

Maybe I'm in a gospel mode right now, but I hear some slow blues/gospel over this so clearly. My guess is that the final 'chorus' could be extended or doubled before the out, but overall I like the framework you have here and the sound. Just want some more meat :) Good stuff.

As for commenting on other submissions; there is no right way or right amount. Just share your feelings as honestly and respectfully as you can.

  • yeah - forgot to mention it was made in Gadget - with a few drum samples from Beathawk imported. I also felt there was a slight bluesy sound to this Johnny.

@Halftone nice track with some real swagger and menace, quite different to the more chilled stuff I have heard you post before.

I like the bass, love the electric piano, some nice catchy and hooky melodic parts on them. Nice build-up of instruments too. Overall a great track, quite dark sounding to me, in a good way.

(edit) I was pretty sure it was Gadget, the bass sounds like it was done in Miami :)

  • Hi all. This is my first time in SOTM. Because I have a track I would like some fb on.. But first. DISCLAMER - everything I say is just my opinion and will be in the nicest way possible and in no way that what I say reflects what society in General would think..
    ?
    That's my ass covered.

@Igneous. Nice, very musical. Many attention grabbing parts. I like that. It's got a kinda Ozric Tentacles meets Beverly Hills cop vibe.! Very well done.

@touchconspiracy. A club toon. No drops or crowd teasing builds though. Like some others have said it could be more attention grabbing if condensed down a bit. If we're my track I'd add some vocal fx/stabs.

@dblonde. Cool track. It's just the sax is very loud and upfront. I can only suggest gain down a bit and roll-off some hi's to push it back in the mix. And the lead (acoustic) needs gain up and roll-On some hi's to bring it more upfront in the mix. I'm a bit unsure about the double tracked sax (harmony) parts. Good work, great musicianship.

@Halftone. Nice. Lovin' the intro. Elec piano works well, great work on the kick, sits nice. Got a little busy around 2:30, not sure what's causing ! Nice vibe. Quite original.

  • This is my track.. Using Nave sounds only (for the Nave competition). I would appreciate some help/experiences/opinions on the mix. As I'm kinda hoping I can get away without doing one !.

Apps used were - Nave for all sounds. Cubasis for recording, midi and audio sequencing /arrangement. Twisted wave for Nave sample editing. NanoStudio as a sample player.

VOCALs :- I am Nave and I do soundwaves, semitone to an octave, attack an decays, sawtooth sync and phase, and cross feed delays, this means there are many ways, that you control how I behave...welcome to the spectrum section, noisy modulation and keytrack direction.

Hello @RUncELL, glad you've pitched up hereabouts :)

Like seeing your piece via the apps in play (as it were). Gives a different feel/insight. This piece isn't my bag of wingnuts, but reminded me of July 3, 1991 when less than year after coming to live in Queens, New York from London, I went to the cinema to see Terminator 2 the day it was released.

And your tune put me in mind of dystopias and their soundtracks. I do struggle with the 'I Am Nave' sound, not because it isn't a really good example of that ilk, but more because it's like hearing the same distinctive voice in a thousand different settings.

Be interested to hear other more informed opinions. Thanks for putting it up here.

  • @RUncELL - I liked your piece. I've been feeling in a bit of an industrial mood the past week or two and this fit the bill. I think you could get away without doing a mix on this, it's definitely passable on my medium quality speakers at work. I'm with Johnny as far as hearing that Nave-y vocal sound too often - but it works here well enough to not take away from anything.

  • @Igneous1 - the overall composition & mix is very good. I like your bass sound - it's a busy bassline but that keeps it interesting throughout. Sounds like an 80's instrumental with some jazz influences - probably cause I hear a lot of iM1 i think.

  • @touchconspiracy When I heard you say deep and dark I was excited to listen - but for my tastes I'd say it could go even darker and deeper. I kept expecting it to lock into a deep groove - it almost came just after the 3min mark but then quickly was gone. I see what you were going for though and it fits that style of music well enough I'd say (haven't listened to much of that type of music for a few years)

Thanks JGY. Glad to be here, happy to help where possible.. In fact song of month suits me well as I only manage to finish one track a month.

I think Terminator sums it well, thanks. I was thinking machine music whilst making. Could maybe classed as Electro/dubstep/atmospheric machine music.. Or Electronica. I dunno!

Btw I thought you were a Brit :) thanks for listening/watching.

  • @dblonde - good recording and mix, thought it was ok, but a little generic sounding for the first half - but I liked the 2nd half much better with the guitar.

  • I'm old school mate, I don't do the dubstep, electro, pop trance methodology..not what I'm aiming for..that stuff is really predictable..strictly 4/4 me

But cheers for feedback and listening!

  • @Halftone....oooh, I like this...wait I'm giving it another listen be right back...really cool beat/vibe/bass I think the only thing I would suggest is something u are already aware of and that's creating a bit more space in the busy bit towards the end.Well done mate and good job for challenging yourself to do something different.Very commendable! I've not heard any of your stuff before so I look forward to more!:)

well, like I said it's been years since I've listened to alot of tech/trance/club/house etc. music. All of my CD's are in boxes and old mp3's stored away on hard drives. I've forgotten 80% of the stuff I used to play ... but let me think for a minute here...

2 groups come to mind - "Breeder" & "Tilt" - both deep and dark progressive house-type groups from mid-2000's (maybe earlier) that I loved alot. Just youtubed them now and gave a quick listen, sound a bit dated yes, but that's the dark and deep groove I'm referring to. I'm sure there's better examples but those 2 sprung to mind - if i think of a better example I will post.

  • @touchconspiracy hey man,a bit long for me this one I'm afraid...I did stick with it though:)
Nice bass and I liked the marimbary sound thingy u had going on that played the bass melody in parts.Im afraid to say that when u lot were all off your faces in a field dancing away to this stuff I was busy reading smash hits trying to learn the words to "ice ice baby" and Aha!!! Hahahaha! I think I've probably lost any kind of respect I had!!!:D oooh, now I remember I did like technotronic and Snap aswell...still not cool?? Oooh,& KLF!! Any how, keep at it my man!
