@Matt_Fletcher_2000 I totally get the desire to perform rather than program drums. I've also experimented with different approaches, like using Impaktor to perform and then Drumagog to replace the sounds, or using DrumJam to add variations on top of sampled loops. Samplr is also a great way to mess with loops. Anything that gets away from the grid is good IMO.
A deeper understanding rhythm is something I personally could really do with, getting a feel for syncopation and being able to create interesting interactions between different elements of a track is something I'm very interested in.
Yep - it's really interesting what a key role drums play I think (depending on the genre of course). I find it fascinating. I started off hating doing drums and found them 'difficult'. Now I actually really enjoy the drum track most, I think.
Getting the balance right between repetition and variation is one of the interesting things. Also using drums as a kind of 'tour guide' for the listener through the track - letting them know that something big is about to come - or cutting out so they can focus on just the music for a beat or two. Then there's the question of where drums cease to become drums - the drum synths i'm using can produce great tonal synth sounds that are obviously 'rhythm' but not necessarily 'drums' as such. The interplay between the drums and the bassline... All really fascinating stuff I think...
Apps like Patterning and functions like "remix pads" on Genome and the "beat flutter" on iElectribe make it all the more interesting to spice things up.
... you know what - I REALLY wish Gadget had a better internal drum synth.
Tokyo is pretty lacking when you put it next to iElectribe, SeekBeats or Elastic Drums... not least because it just has 4 instruments.
@Igneous1
Feels like part of your catalog certainly... I can feel a definite voice/style coming through.
I don't have a problem with it skipping around structurally... It;s got interesting rhythms and stops and starts and twists. That's all cool as far as i'm concerned.
My only complaint, personally, is the choice of sounds, and maybe just those jazzy little phrases now and again, give it just a little bit too much of that 'light and breezy shopping mall music' feel to me.... for my personal taste - to be honest. Lounge music - or whatever it is.
But i'm aware that's a matter of taste and it mainly comes from the choice of sounds I think.
@touchconspiracy
Nicely mixed...
Some really nice bleeps and bowed sounds....
That pumped Brussels synth at about 1.00 and later feels a bit too familiar to be honest. Feels a bit 'default Brussels' .
I like the breakdown at 1.30 where I hear some really nice watery Darwin type sounds come in. Very nice - my favourite bit.
Again I like the middle section breakdown. Like the use of delay on the plucks and pips. Nice full sound and nice atmospheric stuff.
So i'm at about 4.30 now and to be honest it's starting to feel a little long - but i'm aware that i'm not in a club at 2 in the morning getting down with my bad self .
The section at the end is familiar and obviously brings the main hook back... It's pretty decent - although I fine that Brussels patch bit too trancy for my tastes (but i'm sure many love it).
All in all pretty tight stuff - great 'production values' - all sounded very well balanced etc..
@dblonde
Like the drums a lot. Very laid back and groovy.
Guitar is nice. Sax is interesting...
It all sounds really well played.
I guess it meanders a bit - but it's got a nice riff-like feel to the different parts.
Yep - can't really fault it to be honest... It's not the type of music I seek out to listen to, but if the house band were playing this and I was enjoying a nice drink I think i'd be pretty happy.
Good job.
Nice funky ending too. Pretty cool all round.
@LostBoy85 @Marcel
Very cool sounding track. Beautifully produced. Lovely playing and lovely voice.
As a song I think works too. It doesn't try to hard in terms of a "Big Chorus" - but it kind of seeps through on a couple of listens and ends up being pretty catchy.
My one big criticism - the ending! Feels to me like someone just walked over and turned the volume down ('hey, I was listening to that!'). Really doesn't feel like it has a proper ending to me at all.
But it's a great production - very impressive.
@rkmonkey
Great photo - really like it.
Also like the track. Feels very 80s punk... Has a 'recorded live' feel to it.
Your voice is unique and good. The slightly out of tune higher notes add a bit of character I think and aren't a problem.
The guitar solo is great. Maybe the FX on the guitar (or whatever it is you guys do) could be a bit more pro sounding - but then I personally like the 'recorded in a garage' type feel to the whole thing.
The pan pipe type synth sound gives it its 80s feel I think.
"Bitter stamp" is very nice as the hook. What does is mean? "Stamp" as in 'stamp your foot'? It's good anyway. I love the way you scream it as the track fades out - that's probably my favourite bit actually.
All in all - really like this and want to hear more...
Actually I'd love to make an LCD sound system type track one day with your vocals on it! (You like them?)
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 haha! I must have sent u a message just as u wrote this! That's just how CRAZY my life can be sometimes:D
Anyway,thanks dude! I can't speak for Marcel but for me I seem to suck at 'Endings'.
I will work on that for sure in the future.Johnny,please make a note of that in your book thingy!:D
@Monzo thanks for your comments mate.
...right,I'm a bit behind on listens,speak to y'all later:)
@myoss
Nice build up at the start... I like the drums being very low.
Then the bass hits on the drop and it's great. Really cool moving FM type bassline. Would love to know which synth you used and how you made that in Gadget (or did you use effects from Cubasis?).
It's a simple track - but extremely good!
Slow day In the office mate??:D @Matt_Fletcher_2000
And finally @JohnnyGoodyear
I like the GrainScience stuff... it's deep, dark and slightly menacing
piano playing is very nice and atmospheric.
It's good. Musically, it could be the start of another nasty Scandinavian crime drama.
Efficient use of a late lunch break. If I don't get this done in one go it hangs over me .
@JohnnyGoodyear Hey man,nice music and interesting video.I took (and failed spectacularly) media studies at college and my class mates would have loved dissecting the video to this one:) have fun in London mate.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 I just bought Ielectribe last week but haven't had much of a play.You do make it sound like a lot of fun though.I love the super fast delay bits? Very cool! I must admit that the music felt a bit more like a backdrop...a plate that u had to use to serve up your Beat casserole!! Kudos for the "Kind of live" jam session though mate.
@myoss very tight production mate! Good variety.I especially like the breakdowns.Good job...& welcome by the way:)
Thanks Mister R: I suspect that the 'distortion' you mention at 30 secs. is a perfect example of listening back on different headphones etc. It is supposed to do that to coincide with Tilda Swinton (and Kevin) shoving their heads below water, but the effect I'm hearing and the one you are are probably coming out differently. My fault, but good to know.
Thanks for your comments. Like song-writing I guess. Some put the music to the lyrics, some the other way round. I hadn't worked before like most film-score people do whereby they have the celluloid and have to add the music to it. I DID have this idea for the shots and wanted to see if I could make the music reflect the mood of what I intended. A different task altogether as it turned out and, somehow, felt a lot more technical or manipulative than my normal 'just go with what you feel and throw it at the wall' approach. Enjoyed doing it, but not certain it's my calling etc.
EDIT: Oh, and for the record, I'm not moving back to London (who could afford it? , just visiting family...
Thanks. I realized that to explain the meaning or purpose of this would take me 500 words a shot which would kind of defeat the purpose. So I failed my media study too
Thanks Matt. I find Grain Science really good but only to a certain point. My lack of ability to fully understand the effect of the knobs I'm twiddling leaves things feeling a bit limited, but I do like the ability to bring in samples. Wish there were more presets to work from. But I think the UI was/is ahead of its time.
As for the piano, I like Module but rarely use it. My mistake probably. I started out with this melody in Notion, but actually found it easier to complete in the Gadget piano roll (played live and then corrected). I felt for a long while that piano sounds from Gadget were too mechanical, not enough feel, but a combination of turning the Quant. off and then (very slightly) varying the velocity makes a huge difference...
Ive been busy this evening...
Here's the MF2K / @JohnnyGoodYear track... almost entirely Gadget - i just used some 808 samples taken from (and played with) DrumJam for the intro - and some more ethnic DrumJam percussion a little later on.
I'm really keen to know what people think of this one:
@Matt_Fletcher_2000, @LostBoy85 Thanks guys for your comments! Glad you like my track:)
Main bassline is from Chicago with ensemble effect on it, after that I applied hi-pass filter and some high-mid eq and compression.
I've attached screenshots from my gadget session, so you could recreate it. Play low notes on these patches and adjust envelopes to make rhythmical movements to bassline.
Instant steal! Thanks @myoss !
A warm welcome to the club
How long have you been making DnB for @myoss ?
@JohnnyGoodyear sentimental feeling from the video and track. Felt like great art.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 very cool track. Again not qualified as a critic but loved it as a listener.
Cheers Matt
Brussels is the only gadget I use "as is" cause I just feel it don't need much alteration
Funny , I didn't use drawing tho, might have been Kiev or Helsinki
Right now I'm feeling more into progressive house / trance and those type of tracks are longer, and if u remember our old vynil days, tunes on 12" would be 6-8 minutes long
But now they are 3-4.5 minutes long aimed at the charts to be honest, and I don't feel that.
But I do appreciate your points tho
And thanks for listening mate, always appreciate it
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 @JohnnyGoodyear /passage
Another great collaboration for this month. Drums are great. Especially love the 2+ min mark "the rest is up to you".......
Thanks for watching/listening @Matt_Fletcher_2000. No worries, i realise it's not to everyone's taste or moods. I decided to mix it in the end and also made a video using Naves waveform display.. So now everything you see and hear is just Nave (that's if you decide to give it another go).
Feels good to hear that someone really appreciates some music I've (always) poured a lot of energy into. Thanks. Make the bass clear is now downloadable for you.. And most of the video footage in The balance has slipped was, Ahemm! ripped from you tube.. It's of Hashima island off Japan's coast near Nagasaki, deserted since the 70's, also known as Battleship island.
Interesting take on dnb...sounded like it wanted to kick off but didn't really. It's well made and has all the right elements for sure but..needed a bit more "prominence" to get me going.
I think you should carry on working with Johnny, I listened to his 1 minute something track just now and he certainly can pull off some delicate chord work, now if he could immerse himself in listening to current dnb, especially liquid, I'm sure both of you could come up with a killer track!
