@BvsMV that soundcloud embed keeps crashing the whole of that thread page for me on iPad, luckily the thread went to a new page so I can post this. I believe that you can change the Url by pretending 'm.' To make it a mobile url and then the forum won't embed the whole widget but show a link to it.
Oh man! Sorry!
No worries. We had a lot of problems before with the SOTMC when pages were full of soundcloud links. I think it must be down to the limited memory available on an ipad.
I really like that - has a Tangerine Dream (Force Majeure) sound to it, but with a more contemporary beat. Very nice.
Nice stuff - what's the drums created in?
Very cool sounds - nice to know what you're using.
Lovely, nice floaty backing and strong vocals. Funnily enough I'm in the middle of listening to the new Dave Gilmour album and there's a definite DG lilt to your voice - you want to get @flo to stick a guitar break in there.
Hi @richardyot, I think you've captured that melancholy feel well. The chorus melody is fine and the lyrics are good, although you sound a little ridged at the start, maybe need to sing the song over and over more to nail every nuance maybe, I don't know, I don't sing and I won't attempt to, so I have limited advise there. The drums and vox sit well in the mix but the guitar has too much reverb, which puts it in the distance a little, maybe you wanted it back there though I feel it should be more upfront. Good work. Thanks
@RUncELL thanks for the feedback. Still working on my singing, a couple of days ago I bought an app, Colla Voce:
https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1035254849
which gives realtime pitch feedback, very useful, and allows me to practice much more effectively. I've written the guitar and vocals parts for my October entry and I'm using the app to practice the vocals and also to help me to sing harmonies. I've got enough time to practice the vocals for a few weeks before I record them, so I'm hoping this will make a difference.
Last month I bought an iRig HD, and spent the first few weeks of this month starting to put together a couple of guitar based tracks, which come very close to being songs. Then last Friday one of my teeth snapped - followed by a temporary filling, then traumatic 'proper' filling a few days ago where the dentists tool snapped in my mouth, another couple of days of pain where the tooth hadn't been fixed properly, finally fixed by more drilling this morning. So basically, any attempts at finishing my lovely tracks were banished due to my head being in 'a bit of a state'. Having flu at the same time hasn't helped.
So instead this week I fired up Borderlands, Samplr and iDensity and recorded a live jam, out of my head on painkillers and flu remedies, into Audioshare, and over the last couple of days added some Timeless2 drenched Thumbjam and Nave overdubs. It's not pretty, but if music is meant to be representative of how the musician's feeling at a particular moment in time then it's done the job. I'm hoping to get back to pain-free happy noodlings next month. Anyway:
@monzo Ouch! I feel your pain through your song. Had the same problem myself last weekend but fortunately for me the dentist kindly ripped the offending nasher straight out of my grid. Hope the pain has now gone mate. You've done a great job of translating your physical pain & suffering into this dark, menacing tune. That glitchy sound that pans left & right sounds like a mutant mosquito & more relevant to you....... a malfunctioning dentist drill. Sums up your situation to perfection. Whose are the voices? Perfect for your song which to my inexperienced ears, has been performed & mixed very well. Nice one.
Very kind comments, thank you -and hope your gnashers are good now too!
The voices are a very mangled @johnnygoodyear and a field recording I made at a local fete. They get the same old farmer to do the announcing at all the local events here, as he's the only one with a vocal PA! He's totally unsuitable for the job though, being grumpy and bossy by default but I think everyone's used to him now.
@monzo yes, thanks all good on the tooth front now. The relief I felt after the extraction will be similar to how I will feel when I actually finish a SOTMC tune. Ah yes we have the same type of bloke who pulls his old Peavey PA out once a year to do his announcing at the village fete near to the town where I live. If he's not announcing then you'll find him in the warm beer tent! You wouldn't need to mangle his voice after 5pm as it's messed up enough after guzzling down a gallon of real ale. Great idea though & how you've mixed it all in with Mr @JohhnyGoodyear voice is the perfect accompliment to your pain felt song.
Looking forward to the guitar tunes.
Yeah it's a bit of a challenge getting something done in time for SOTM - but good motivation - look forward to hearing your stuff
Our local announcer has one of those old 1960's fete PA's with the big grey trumpets - nicely distorted with loads of feedback!
@monzo mostly asleep in a lovely home away from home in Sandy, Beds, still somehow on Austin time, and wondering if this is my 'Paul is dead' moment. Hope so I pity you the mouth trauma and wish you increasing well.
Recovering here from an attack of London all day yesterday. Far more like Hong Kong than I remember. The Tate was a vast rugby match, but just about still worth it. Borough Market a Bosch painting and probably not despite the steak and Stilton pies.....Sartre was in some ways right, hell is other people....
London's pretty unrecognisable to me these days, since I moved from the South East nearly 30 years ago.....England is a very noisy, crowded place. I can recommend a trip to Wales if you need to breathe deeper, and pop in for a cuppa if you're passing the bit in the middle.
@Igneous1 a jazzy, busy (in a good way) vibe with lots going on to enjoy. Cute drum patterns & they hold it together while I catch all the other sounds to stimulate these ageing ears. Good stuff.
@touchconspiracy Got my feet tapping on the beat & my head nodding on the hihat. All crystal clear & crisp delivery. I like that bass sound at 5.27 & found it an altogether an-uplifting tune.
@dblonde some great live playing by all, highlighted by the guitar work. Maybe some more drum fills to mix it up Chilled, cool tune. Marvellous musical tribute to your friend.
@Halftone Chuggingly dark start with the scary bass line that holds together thru your song. Interesting contradiction when the piano kicks in as it lightens your track. Solid drums superglue your tune with crisp hats.
@LostBoy85 & @Marcel Great collaboration. Another well played, sung, mixed tune. Marcels nice ghostly Cure sounding guitar work marries well with Lostboys, as usual, top vocals. Car, wardrobe it doesn't matter. Your voice would sound good recorded anywhere.
@rkmonkey Great guitar playing which sound even better after the verses & especially at 2.30. I agree about the 80's ref to the sound/style of your voice. I don't know why either but it is. Energetic enthusiasm played with freedom. Enjoyable first effort.
@myoss Yum wobble bass which I've only discovered since joining this party. I like the sounds after the bass as well. Drums are tight, soaring lead sound. Real good tune that is easily danceable. (I couldn't keep up but I know a crew that could & would).
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 & @JohhnyGoodyear Another brilliant duo entry. Great idea. Tight groovy tune. Love the bass in at 2.12 laying down a smooth carpet underneath. Your cool voice is perfect for this top dance tune. The start of something huge I feel. Totally ace. Both your solo tracks hit home as well. That video was awesome.
@richardyot I haven't been around long but for me, your best song yet. I like that slide guitar work & your vocals allowed me to hear & understand your message. Have you used brushes for the snare? The drums sound real. Like you've put a felt beater head on the bass drum. I like it.
@mrufino1 some lovely sounds going on. Chirpy hi hats with a straightish beat works for me. The bass adds a tinge of darkness to your positive mood groove. I can't open page 7 to see what you said about your song but it's all played & mixed.
@RUncELL paints a bleak post apocalyptic scene with manic robots grooving to your tune after they've cleared out yet another human outpost. Not many left now. Could be used in a terminator film. I enjoyed the vid & again as I can't get onto page7, this way I could see what you used. Grimy, industrial, really good.
@monzo have commented & listening again it has reinforced the pain you were in. I hadn't even heard of that PA before but it certainly works for the farmer announcer. Totally with your tune how you've used/re worked his & Mr Goodyears voice was an ace move.
I think that's all. Hope I haven't missed anyone. Now the only song I will be singing over the next couple of hours will be "Blue Moon" as the mighty blues work together to get a win over Spurs. Blue moon....I saw you standing alone........
@DaveMagoo really enjoyed the track. Like the change in dynamics when the drums drop out and return.
@Monzo very cool track. Interesting and twisted in all the right ways for me.
Thanks @Bluepunk. That's a cool description.
@Monzo sounds like a great reflection of how you feel. Hope your back to yourself now. Sounds like you had some sound mangling fun, very trippy and Future sound of London esqe I must add. Good work
@myoss. Sorry, not forgotten you. I've had 4 or 5 listens over the last week. I like it. Some good sounds, good arrangement, beat works well. It's definatly dancefloor worthy. Nice one.
I'm slightly hungover this morning, so @monzo's entry for the month reminded me of coming down from bad mushroom trips when I was younger and braver. I like the atmosphere at the end.
Thanks
@monzo thanks for the kind offer. I have found my week here a swirl of familial responsibility mixed in with lots of hiding. Belgium tomorrow. To be honest I can't wait to get back to my own hole, and think I would feel that whether it was Taiwan or Texas. The Road is terribly exhausting.
Thanks - I'm going to record a few more of our local announcer's performances, might get a concept album out of that one.
Thanks!
Thanks, I'm at an age where illnesses seem to drag on forever but getting there - and thanks for the FSOL comparison! I play their Environments series quite a bit - must be making a subconscious impression on me
ok...
My sympathies - fortunately most of my family are UK based so the worst I have to deal with is a visit to darkest Essex.
Plonked this out. Red Moon Rising - because, well, you know! Droney ambient track.
Preset available if you want it.
Thank you, cheers for listening !i
@lostBoy85 (feat Marcel) Wind of Change: smooth and easy to listen to - i love that kind of guitar tone (what did you use?) and the vocals were much better than I expected - very good. Overall nice smooth, clean production on the track.
@rkmonkey - Bitter Stamp: vocal stylings/flow were very original i thought. not usually my kinda thing - but they fit well for this track. The solo guitar bit around 2:00 was very good.
@myoss - Closed Irritation: Intro went on a bit long for my tastes, but some cool sounds. and then that awesome bass sound! love it! Nice beat. I really like the plucky synth thingy that comes in the breakdown around 2:05. Overall quite nice track - my only thoughts are that it could maybe be fleshed out a bit more...
@SHAM - Coolin': just started listening .. but works calls .. so more to come on rest later..
@MusicInclusive Definitely space and red moon inspired. Will certainly play it if I am ever aboard a ship to the moon.
@Halftone and @Bluepunk thanks for the feedback.
Thanks very much to @Halftone and @Bluepunk for your feedback:)
Thx for your positive comment! About the solo guitar tone: I used in GarageBand the "dreamy" preset in Audio Recorder. I also used a clean tone from Bias FX (and put the "dreamy" preset on top of that). This GarageBand preset really colors the tone nicely.
If you try to search for this "dreamy" preset: it is a bit hidden: in Garageband go to Instruments > Audio Recorder > record something (voice for instance) and only after recording it is visible.
thanks @Marcel - I'm definitely going to try that soon! awesome
