Garage Band Update

  • Has anyone with multitrack studio checked if GarageBand shows up as an audio unit instrument?

  • It figures they would bring drummer to iOS the day after I buy DrumPerfect Pro.

  • I tried to google this but to no avail. Does anybody know of a list with what Audio Unit compatible synths and effects are on the AppStore?

The two are quite different. I did the same

  • Yes, I know. I just think it's funny.

Cool. I just see it as a bonus. Now I have two sources for drums with humanish feel.

Must say, I'm loving this update and can see myself using GarageBand again.

  • I've got a pretty comprehensive collection of apps and so far only isem is available as an AU. If there are more there can't be many, but I'm hoping the floodgates are about to open. It'll be interesting to see how Patterning manages it with that interface.

  • Yeah sure Apple could produce an all singing all dancing daw. But then they would kill all the competition and people would complain about that too.
Strikes me they keep the balance about right produce a tool that's good enough to get people interested and able to produce some good results but leave space for other people to develop more powerful products and still make money at it.

  • It is certainly an update that is exceeding my expectations.

Not only can I use au on a track -- now I can make a midi loop in iSem and play it on the grid, that is pretty cool. I hope more synths will follow and support au functionality.

No automation for iSEM parameters... :( wish it will come up in a next update...

Well I can't control iSEM midi when using it as AU in MultitrackStudio either. When I asked Girl Bremmers (MTS dev) about it he said MTS is pushing all midi to the AU instrument. Therefore it has to be an iSEM problem.

I have filed a support ticket about it with Arturia after giving up hope anyone ever will reply to my post in Arturia forum (early Dec).

  • GB has some great tools, but is missing some fundamentals, particularly in the areas of fx and mixing. It also doesn't play that nice with other apps so it can be a pain to start in GB and then export everything to say Auria Pro. If it could be an Audiobus Input, and maybe have Link too, then I would use it a lot more. I was initially quite excited by this update, but apart from Drummer, I kind of now feel that this update was aimed at people other than me.

    Hurray for the "clip matrix"
To bad the eq and compression are such a joke

  • Correct me if I wrong but there's only iCloud to import samples to the grid? :/

The drums from what I heard were nothing much to talk about especially when compared to say drum perfect pro or rock and funk drum machine. Are they that deep really? I was not going to bother clearing space for garbage band but perhaps I will have to seek out more examples? I have installed it three times already only to remove it after finding it lacking any features worth the space.

I'm liking what I see so far. AppleLoops can finally be transposed freely and are not limited to the tuning of the section. This makes it possible to have say 8 bar section with a few repetitions of a 2 bar bassloop and each 'copy' can be transposed at will. I's also possible to half or double the tempo

Are you saying that I can transpose the loops to follow my chord progression?

You can transpose the AppleLoops by +/- semitones and when importing the loop into a section it matches the root-note set for the section.

I'll play are with GarageBand once my iPad is done charging :)

  • Go to grid mode

    Press edit button bottom left

Press cell in grid and select edit - changes to an audio track view

Press on audio track then press paste.

  • No need for AudioCopy to get sounds into GarageBand. Just copy to general pasteboard in AudioShare and paste into Garageband, unfortunately it's a 'one way street', ie. no way 'copy' from Garageband to AudioShare.

  • I'm finding it better than my initial impressions. I still find it lacking in FX use, but so does Gadget.

So I have another sketch pad app, that gets so close to fulfilling my jamming needs, but again no cigar.

No midi learn yet for iSem in MTS but you can automate the controls via the editor at least. Not that I've had time to play with this much.

  • Too bad the 'Sampler' in GB doesn't support pasting of sounds.
(It would have been nice to just select a 'section' of a recording and dump it to the Sampler).

The IAA-Recorder nicely waits for input.(Wish AudioShare could do this when recording from IAA sources).
There seems to be no way to permanently trim the recordings, bummer.

The 'loop thing' makes it very easy to play around with Apple Loops.

It would have been nice to see 'Link' and 'IAA-Generator' support, who knows maybe next update :D

you can drag an audio region to a sampler track which is awesome. What I was hoping was that you can drag multiple regions to create a multisampled drumkit or smth.

  • PS: You can import audio from iCloud and when that document picker shows up click Locations and choose Dropbox or whatever you want ;)

  • Also works with Import from audioshare or any other document provider in iOS

The "loop thing" makes it very easy and relaxed to come up with structure
Verse & chorus intro drum break whatever
Without having to move little bits of audio from this to that side on the screen anytime you changed your mind ...

True, just like in Ableton Live. Plus it records clip automation, although you can't edit synth parameters, but it's good enough for me.

It seems no one thinks that you can take this project and import it into Logic and go bananas!

Thanks for the tip on dragging audio to sampler track to create an instrument, pretty neat :)

I can't find iCloud Drive anywhere in GarageBand!?!(I don't use 'Apples iCloud', only the iOS Filepicker).

You should write Rolf from Tempo Rubato and NOT Arturia about that!He did the port (and Nave or Nlog) and he is doing a great job if it comes to support.

@topic: had no chance to try yet but i'm not too impressed.Still too many mandatory features missing (or half baked) and ignoring common standards. But i wasn't expecting any new features besides AU support (but where are the FX???) and well...it's free so...

When the loop browser appears, click AUDIO and below you have "Import from iCloud Drive"

  • Can the slide up control bar on iOS be disabled? Got into my groove with some drums and loops. Problem is the FX sliders are so close to the bottom of the screen, that I kept sliding the control bar up and changing settings :(
