PS: You can import audio from iCloud and when that document picker shows up click Locations and choose Dropbox or whatever you want ;)

Thanks for the tip on dragging audio to sampler track to create an instrument, pretty neat :)

I can't find iCloud Drive anywhere in GarageBand!?!(I don't use 'Apples iCloud', only the iOS Filepicker).

When the loop browser appears, click AUDIO and below you have "Import from iCloud Drive"

I can only see 'Apple Loops' and 'Music' on the Loop browser :(

I'm wondering if Apple 'disables' iCloud Drive/FilePicker in GarageBand if Apples iCloud Drive is not active on system-level?!? (Yepp, that's it, have to enable iCloud Drive on 'System Level' to get the Audio Tab in Loops menu).

I would of liked to see GarageBand in the input of Audio Bus.

and Therein lies the problem. GarageBand is Host only. I can't send the output from GB to any app. This reminds me of Korg Gadget.

What do you mean?Gadget works as IAA and in AB.

    Well... dooh :D

It is a BIG DOH! since other apps that use iOS FIlepicker/iCloudDrive do not have to have iCloud Drive enabled on System Level :)

Thankfully Garageband doesn't automatically copy all sounds to the 'iCloud Drive' hosted by Apple or otherwise the standard free 5GB's would fill up very fast and I'd rather use that for other things like mail...

  • There are no AU-compatible apps for iPhone yet, right? Only iPad?

Maybe nLog will be the first...

    Holy Batman!

This update is HUGE! I really hated that app, but this changes things... perhaps. We shall see.

    Good job.

BTW, post any 'decent' tutorial links (from YT or wherever). The Apple docs for these things are a bit weak IMHO.

Strange that they not have added woodwind to the touchinstruments...

Many have waited years for trumphet, sax, flute etc...

    But, this update looks great!

No sax, but flute, oboe, clarinet, brass, French horn and more have been added. They are within the "Keyboard" instrument. The flute and brass sounds are mighty fine too!

Overall a good update, sure it's lacking some items, but at the price...hard to beat.

  • I hear many people complaining (including myself) but then take a step back and think: man, it is only garage band. It is a simple and user friendly piece of software. It isn't supposed to do anything that other major DAWs do because they like it to stay simple.

I expect Apple will roll out some kind of light version or Logic within the next couple of years and THAT probably will satisfy the less satisfied. Yes, isem automation would be nice but I think that already verges on the 'advanced' and more likely than not will never come, non less because isem is a third party app.

What I find truly irritating is the babyfication of mac version of Logic. In fact I had to go back to version 9 to feel like a grown up again.

  • My iPad4 can barely handle the drummer playing with one instance of the iSEM AU but GarageBand is now probably the best audio looper on iOS. The other looper app developers will have to work hard to adjust to the new (not new on desktop) standard of clip launching AND traditional timeline working nicely along each other.

Same here. But just as Loop Library/Loop Player, GarageBand would worth the price.

Sorry, genuine question. I haven't done much playing with the new looping feature.

How can it be the best looper app on iOS without midi to connect external gear? Also does the loop section support different time signatures? At first glance it reminds me very much of the Novation launchpad app.

  • If it had Link and AB in input slot @ 3 times the price it would be a must have

  • "Loop launcher" would be a more accurate description for what GarageBand LiveLoops does.

I don't think it works for "looping" performances where you are recording live instruments on the fly. ...but I'd love to be schooled if anyone can show me how to do this in GarageBand

I should have said something like - best for my specific needs. Thanks for the correction. I'm not looking for the midi trigger features but I was hoping that Loopy Masterpiece would be something with Ableton like clip launching AND timeline workflow and now this is it. And there's no other looper on iOS at the moment that does that so I'll be using this till the bar is raised again, hopefully with the release of Loopy Masterpiece

  • It fails in several ways vs. Launchpad, alas.

    1) when you import to LP, you're asked to punch in either BPM or bar length. Punch in one, it calculates the other. With GB, I load a loop that works as 4 bars @ 97bpm. GB does not calculate this. When I open the loop in the timeline, it calculates as 2 bars / 1 beat?! Can't tell it any different, shy of starting the project at that BPM. Hell, GB won't even let me pick a decimal point for the BPM.

    2) Effects; they're locked to the overall project. Can't assign echo or stutter, etc. to one instrument. Useless there.

Granted, LP is a performance-only app, but what it does, it does well.

Well done Mister Toz hadn't noticed all of that 'other' section.....just had a nice ten minutes playing clarinet :)

Well done indeed! Totally missed those on my brief visual inspection

  • Ah, nice. I hadn't seen that either. Very good to have these sounds in there.

  • How or where do I find this “loop launcher” thing? Is it an instrument, or a “mode” or something?

  • Ouch my ears..fucking skrillex wanna bees...skrillex killed dubstep..

Create a new song, select "live loops" at the top of the screen. It's only available for the iPad Air, iPad mini 2 and higher.

  • This playing of loops is like playing someone else's music to me. I'm probably very old fashioned, but give me something with a melody and interesting chord changes any time.

little correction: the itunes store description says Live Loops is for ipad 4 or higher - not just Air.

    Can't have both?

  • edited January 2016

    @Samu
You can transpose the AppleLoops by +/- semitones and when importing the loop into a section it matches the root-note set for the section.

I'll play are with GarageBand once my iPad is done charging :)

Sorry, I'm a little thick here  but how to do this? Do I have to record a section with smart instruments to set the chords to follow??

Create these changes and put em in. This is a performance tool. I'm with you, but this allows you to effectively remix and arrange your own stuff on the fly.
