Propellerhead: [reasonable business decisions]

EDIT by Sebastian: I've replaced the clickbait-y headline with something more calm, since I have friends at Propellerheads and I know for a fact that they're smart and reasonable people.

I remember the first app I bought. Figure. Oh wow, that was a great feeling. The magic of making real electronic music with an IPad. So, with Figure and Garageband, I bought Audiobus. Next I bought THOR. WHAT!?

Using Thor that first day I realized the future had changed in making music for me.

Unfortunately, it seems Propellerhead had a different future in mind. And REBIRTH - F yeah! Amirite?

Propellerhead was obviously embarking on making serious music production apps for IPads. At what point did they turn into a hipster "share if you care" Community based jingle platform?

What happened to the serious company making serious apps? All I get now is spam and other useless nonsense regarding "faux" remixes of 2 bar loops from Figure or maybe some person singing a bar with auto tune with the accompanying non sense app Propellerhead spends so much time maintaining.

So, what is the deal Propellerhead? I can do the math and understand WHAT you are doing. I am just confused on WHY you chose to go down the community based hipster "jingle" app.

Am I alone?

  • Not to mention the neglect of Thor, and the lack of ports of other apps, like ReCycle, which would rock on an iPad.

  • @RustiK
Do Propellerhead have a 'Reason' for doing this ? he he he

I get what you are saying, I remember when Rebirth came out on the PC, it was a revelation and a view on the future, Reason was that future back then.
But I agree on iOS they have not fulfilled the same initial promise that they showed. Perhaps one day.

You're not alone but i think iOS is still a main platform to attract people to their full desktop things.... When that not works there are millions of consumers out there who want to make their amazing ring tones.
Are there any other "big" companies taking iOS really serious..... Not really yet!
The independent developers are the ones who push it and that doesn't seems to change!
Then i understand all those developers not to release more "pro" apps because of the app store rules etc.

  • The hipster type apps are probably driven by market research. I guess that market isn't the for hardcore iOS musician, but the more casual ones. Maybe they know their market, maybe that's where the money is. Maybe they've got it wrong, who knows?

    Korg, Steinberg, Ableton...

  • Rebirth on the iPad needs some serious 'developer-love', Link and Proper export options at least 'Open In...' for the wave and iCloud Drive for the rest.

It's already possible to export the *.rbs file using 'Open In...' but no way to do the same for recorded audio :(

If I don't recall it's our 'favourite' developers(ehm. Retronyms) that helped Propellerhead to bring Rebirth to iOS...

C'mon, we do have to give Korg some credit here.

But like i said.... These are very light apps and not what i would like to see on devices like an iPad Pro!
So where is Abelton Touch iOS, Cubasis is very limited too.
    Korg....yes you're right maybe here!

  • Yamaha has some pretty cool apps.

Roland managed to give us the SoundCanvas and revitalised it for the Desktop, just hoping the iOS version catches up with the desktop version.

Arturia and Waldorf are in it too.

And I'm pretty sure all the 'big' players will release updated version this year.

And well, Korg has my respect and what ever IAPs the next version of Gadget gets I'll get them too :)

  • I filed a complaint with Propellerheads over a year ago regarding a crash in Rebirth. I have reinstalled everything without any positive result. Every time I press the Audiocopy button, the app crashes to the iOS home screen with rebirth closed in the background. They acknowledged receipt of the complaint and failed to release any update. They have continuously failed to implement any user requests for figure and rebirth, and Thor development seems stagnant. Figure could have been something serious and special, but as is, it's nothing more than a toy. Figure needs some proper editing ability but I can't see that happening either. Bad Props. ☹

  • Propellerheads kind of suck these days.. I've been with them from reason 3. They should be doing so many amazing things like an iOS version of.. Any of their reason racks really

  • I heart KORG...

I mean come on - what a great company... both hardware and iOS apps... And just so fricking cool to go with it...

  • Grid and/or Piano-Roll editor is one of my wishes for Figure and while they're at it Link would be nice.
And add 'Open In..' or at least replace the 'iTunes' with iCloud Drive. AudioCopy as it is today should just disappear and be forgotten.

Lost my love for the Props some time ago, you don't tend to get much for your upgrade dollars IMO. Luckily now I have Ableton, Logic and an iPad bursting at the seams with music apps. Life is good. The Props are perfectly at liberty to try and win me back anytime they choose, but for now.... (I'm old school, I had the original Rebirth and Reason from version 2, and boy did the sequencer suck back then :-) ).

  • Nobody can deny Auria Pro is "serious" about ios..IK multimedia too ..Korg also..But Auria Pro for sure.

Rebirth also has some serious flaws under iOS9:saving a copy of a song under a different name is an insta crash. And it happened two times that rebirth got stuck while overwriting an existing file and the result was a corrupt project file (can't open them anymore). They should do at least fix those real issues but i have to admit that i was to lazy to write them yet.

Like i said too..... Auria Pro is maybe what come clostest to a full bown DAW and it´s made from an great independent developer.
While i love IK multimedias apps really they are just very light versions of their desktop tools too!

  • on Rebirth and Retronyms,

    Damn Retronyms
(although i think someone else took over rebirth maintenance)

  • I lost all hope in there Apps, blame the person they have in charge of App development. They don't respond to mails or even fix reported bugs.
To be honest Figure was one of my first Apps, but thes days don't even use it , any app that does not support landscape, delete.
They have some of the best apps if only they would listen to the users and update these apps.
I have all respect for Korg, Gadget is not perfect , but al least Korg listen ,

  • Korg. And Mister Rim.

  • A ton of factors goes into all of this. I tend to see just as much internal division over ios at big companies as there is in the marketplace with some people loving mobile and others rolling their eyes and writing apps off as toys. This may create internal drag on inovation on development. Of course there are also simple economics to deal with. They allocate x amount to various areas/projects and then see how much comes back. Then market research and yadda yadda gets involved. Anyway, i say hats off and thanks to any company or individual who simply tries. not every horse is a winner and not every horse cares to run the same race.

  • ^AudioGus, you are correct, hats off to anyone who tries to succeed in Apples marketplace, but Propellerheads have failed where their customer support is concerned. They charged premium app prices for Rebirth , and to leave a product broken for more than a year is unacceptable. Ok figure is now free, but I paid for it, along with many others, and the product development has not gone in the direction I would like to see. They also actively blocked further access to editing with the 3rd party app 'Figaroo' which allowed basic editing of each track in the figure timeline. Miserable gits in my book.

  • I guess Propellorheads are happier being kings of their own lucrative closed system than mere subjects & taxpayers to Apple's .
For me the disappointment is that the Props led the way in low CPU instruments which is what had them leading the PC software market in the early stages of computer musicmaking with the low specs of yesteryear's cutting edge computers .
They were ideally equipped to blaze development on the early specs of IOS, but it seems their own Racks environment got in the way. They may yet deliver , but most aspects of Reason are now otherwise covered by others , & the Ipad CPUs are now running on a par to PCs , so there is no longer the wow factor of the early days of PC Reason.

I would mention Waldorf as a big name , if not company , who are at least trying on IOS , although with their products covering so many markets it seems the software dev/s can't keep up . I'm still hoping for fullfillment of promised features for Attack .

  • I was really desiring reason on iOS (and it didn't have to be cheap). However, that was a while ago. Gadget fills that role for me quite nicely. I haven't used reason since version 4, started on version 2, and it was great for me then.

I only used figure once in a while as a therapy tool at work, but not in a long time. Actually imaschine has done well in that role. It is what it all is though.

With auria pro and gadget, and now the updated garageband I'm not lacking in tools to make music quickly and smoothly.

  • Propellerheads came up with Rewire in 1998 and I don't think they have made any significant changes since. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Compare that with all the innovations for linking synths and DAWs together that have happened on iOS in the last few years, or even the last few months with Link.

For me companies are just grey amorphous blobs and I never really expect anything from it nor does it get my respect or loyalty. Individuals within them to a certain degree but a company is 'like any other machine. Its either a benefit or a hazard.' Wink. just logos in the end. An Ai made of people who are slave mechanica to it. Not that I want to go down that rabbit hole with that hat.

But yah if it wont invest in customer support for products that it is selling then fuck it, the shark hath been jumpethed and stay clear of that ring of fins etc... Losing metaphorical foundation beep, buzz!

  • Well I have to say with Midi Sync Link, that Rebirth syncs up very nicely to Korgs Gadget, other other Linked apps. Much better than before. It would be nice if Propellerhead made Figure a link able thing too. Once IOS DAWs get linked up, it will be a hell of a lot easier.

  • Right, Korg, Yeah.
So, how do I share a project from Gadget with another band member or writing partner ?
AND without having to dig into data in iTunes.
They ALL see the iPad as nothing more than something to drive us to the desktop and more expensive apps.
Most of the bigger companies can barely disguise their condescension.

I was with Reason since the beginning up until v5 + Record. The best thing about it was it never ever crashed on me. I only stopped upgrading when Nanostudio on the iPhone came along and the stripped down simplicity gave me a new lease of life.
Can you imagine propellerheads getting something so powerful to work smoothly on an iPad?

    I can't! Probably why they havn't bothered.

  • I've been saying that Props jumped the shark since Reason 8 was released, and I'm glad there are people here who also know that. Figure and Take should've been left in the dust, so that ReBirth and Thor can be updated. It's not fair that the free apps get all their attention while all of us who paid for ReBirth and Thor get ignored. Reason 8 and all it's point releases have been subpar at best, and still haven't been worth the $129 to upgrade from R7. Rack Extension SDK development has been stagnant as well. As a result of that, many major devs are not onboard, and some have left. I haven't bought any REs since 2013. I'm not enticed by them when their VST counterparts are 10 times better at the same price. I don't care for VST support in Reason. But I'd like to see REs improve to the point where they're of equal quality. For the past year, I feel that I'm getting more value for my money with iOS apps. But definitely not the ones I paid Propellerhead for.
