Song of the Month Club - August 2016

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. Instrumentals are fine, but songs with vocals are even better. A bad vocal is better than no vocal, so if you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material.

  • guess I'll start the festivities... Back to Gadget for me after a couple of GB submissions the past few months.

I set out wanting to make a more ambient track with some cold, digital synths & a little bit of an industrial edge with some gritty tones & textures.. As I worked on it, I upped the tempo a bit & the track took on a bit more of a dark, digital groove. The icing on the cake was finding an awesome NASA radio transmission from a mission where the pilots started hearing strange music being broadcast on their radio frequency. I used 2 bits from that - the sample in the beginning of track says "Well that sure is weird music". The 2nd sample in the breakdown later says "That music even sounds outer spacey doesn't it? You hear that? That whooshing sound?". The song had me feeling/thinking about space - so this fit perfectly! This is one of those tracks I was just happy to finish finally and when I was done thought it turned out ok - but then I listened in the car afterwards over a few days and the track grew on me more and more. So I'm very happy with this one. Hope you guys enjoy it too. All made with Gadget, with one imported drum loop I had sitting around from somewhere. I used AudioMastering after to do a little tweaking.

  • @Halftone , really nice track! I like how it builds up nicely. What did you use for the bass?

thanks!... I'll have to double check. Think there was a Phoenix at the start, then a Dublin comes in.

  • @Halftone Very enjoyable mate! I especially love that bass line and the sound of it.Nice discovery with those samples, they really add to the ambience and are just a great fit.The track wears it's 5.45 nicely! Excellent work man.

  • Hey dudes,

Here's a track I finished a couple of weeks ago! I like to try different stuff as those of you who know me know.On this occasion I was trying to write a club track! :# It came out a bit 90's maybe?? I leant quite heavily on "sessionband deep house" for the drums and bass but I added the strings and the piano & turned it into a song.Im obviously not David Guetta, but I did have fun attempting it! :p The lyrics are no pot of gold but I'm happy enough with them.I wish I knew some more tricks to use on the vocals but I exhausted my skill set.Still any advice, feedback is more than welcome. :) If anyone fancies trying a remix, that would be cool.Any,I hope you like it.
    Cheers

  • @halftone great atmosphere. Now with IOS music production I am starting to appreciate this electronic groove and actually enjoyed very much the listening!

  • @lostboy85 , Man you nailed it, aboslutely 90's disco ! I like the pianos , where did you get them?

  • My contribution of this month , a melacholic tone. This was made with Garage band pre IOS times. Now with the band we play ,uch more rockier but still like the rainy tone still the original version has IMHO.

  • @AlexB hey man, thanks for commenting on my track. Where are you from mate? I've been trying to figure out the accent...anyway,I love the "I haven't found" part with the harmonies.Very nice and a good hook imo.Id be interested to hear how it sounds with the band? The production on this is nice but some of the samples sound a little dated (the strings mainly) Anyway, that's not your fault is it,so it's a non factor really.I mean you did record it in the olden days before iOS right?? :D

    Nice work mate!

  • Oops...I forgot to answer your question. The piano is from Korg M1,put through some funky preset in "pianoverb" in Auria pro. B)

a solid house track. is that you singing the vocals? pretty good. i don't have much else to say on this one.

i liked the tone this sets right off the start with the piano notes. vocals weren't exactly my cuppa tea, but they work well for this type of track. i was half expecting this song to build up intensity as it went along. would be more interested in hearing the 'rock' version of this I think. Animals - Pink Floyd reference? I think I hear a slight PF influence here.

  • Thanks.Yes that's me singing.

Like it a lot. Samples perfect for the job at hand. Might take a little reverb off the second one. Love the guitar (or whatever it was in these confusing days :)) that comes in towards the end. Would have liked a lot more of that, but then it wouldn't have had the same feel/power when used sparingly like this. Good effort.

Sounds very polished to me Mister Leo. I think sometimes -the better you are- the more that last 5 per cent of whatever it might be feels just over the hill, but I think that's probably illusory, especially to the vast majority of us listeners. I do think, with your style and skills that it would be very interesting to hear a tune like this given over to the hands of a Mastering Boss and see what difference they might make to it. NOT a re-mix, a full spit and polish. I think this track would make for a very interesting basis of comparison. Or perhaps even to just hear what someone like @tarekith would have to say as regards what kind of difference (if any; I dunno) that might make.

As regards the tune itself, again very accomplished for its thingie. Not my bottle of Brasso, but that's not what we're here to natter about :). Good work.

Like the tone too and I can hear PF here a little, but maybe moreso (oddly maybe) Mark Knopfler. I like the gloomy rainy edges and your world-weary delivery. If anything I'd like to hear you take that yet further (but don't forget I'm a miserable bastard...). Well done.

Typing as I am re listening
This is quite cool! I like the bit crushed pad ish sound. The opening sample feels too loud, could use more reverb and delay to my taste
I like that super saw sounding chords bit too and the transition to it is quite seamless.
That little drum break after the second sample is simple but really spices things up!
I do find the lower end of the sounds, especially the bass are a little light maybe.
What are you using for synths to get the gritty sounds? Every thing I do in gadget sounds too nice I find.

    Good job

    Good job

For the gritty sounds - a Kiev for the distorted guitar type sound. I used a Helsinki for pads, and a Phoenix doubled with a Wolfsburg for some lead. Also a Berlin in there too. And there's a Chicago in there too. And Maseiile and Chiang Mai also.

  • Some of the above also used the new fx in Gadget.

Yeah I figured, with the bit crushed sound, but still woefully lacking good distortion!
I wish Korg added all the insert effects to gadget that are in the new electribe!

  • Hi, folks!

That's my entry for this month. Enjoy!

    Hi, folks!

A song with two faces or two hearts. One I sit on the hillside with drinking a small glass of something very dry, the other comes by with large powerlines and rips my heart out. I find it confusing but accomplished :)

    This is a true story.

    Going Home

    I was in the desert
    Saw a plane come down
    Small fighter jet
    From a small base town

    Deep into Nevada
    Sand and razor wire
    Thinking that the man
    Would surely take it higher

    Nothing I was shouting
    Stopped the fall and crash
    All became as fire
    And then became as ash

    Wednesday I remember
    Just before three
Kids in the car were crying
    Just the same as me

Later on we caught a movie
But the watching felt like shame
    In some silent way
We were none of us the same

    Going home, going home
    However far it is
    You go alone

  • just a short notice
5 different tracks, each one nailed it in it's very own, particular way, great
I much appreciate the tasty, non-loudness driven mixes - makes listen a pleasure
(details following with a longer time slot appearing...)

    cheers, Tom

  • @Halftone Give me that darkness sir. Go on....oh yeah! Think this the broodiest piece I've heard coming out of the gates of Gadget. Works & feels very good....different. That bass riff you're pushing out is effective at keeping the deep metallic undertones flowing. Always there reminding that this space travel excursion thing does come with the threat of alien created music shredding the ears from you! (Only alien, I hear you say, ;) ). The light, spacey jingles you play send my mind off out into the ether.

Like the part at 2.33. Depeche Mode on the Vindaloos. Top stuff. Nice rhythm, especially the hats. They have a certain flick quality - "chicca, chicca, chicca," technical term! I listened to this as a huge dark grey cloud blocked the light & warmth of the sun. Perfect conditions to get the most from your trip to the black. Thanks for inviting me on board Captain. Is this one the loo door? NNNOOOOOOOO...DONT OPE..... ;)

  • @JohnnyGoodyear hey man, lots to like here man.The story and the telling of it are very powerful. The melody and the harmonies for the going home parts are well done/catchy and upbeat to contradict the darker subject matter. What a thing to have seen!

Nice work man.Ive got that chorus in my head now!

  • Created in Gadget, using six instances of 'Kamata', drums are from 'Gladstone' and acoustic bass from 'Madrid'.
Mastered in Auria Pro, using the Fabfilter MB compressor and Q2 Eq.

It was originally something of a test to see what I could do with Kamata, At first I was rather underwhelmed by it, but I warmed to it more so over time.

  • @Halftone A pleasure to listen to as usual, love that dark hooky bassline, with those really fat synth sounds. A brooding and sprawling piece, full of atmosphere, interesting melodies, great textures, and a funky beat to go with that bass.

It's got a very different feel to your Garageband output, much more electronic sounding, and the drums don't have the dynamism of the GB drummers, but it's good to hear a change of pace. It's also quite refreshing to hear something so dark coming out of Gadget.

  • @LostBoy85 In terms of genre it's definitely not my bag, as this more of a hands-up-in-the-air-with-a-glowstick-and-a-whistle kinda tune rather than I'll-hide-behind-my-floppy-fringe-and-gaze-at-my-shoes one, but the vocal is very accomplished and it's good to hear you trying out a different genre every month. You should however probably consider forging your own identity at some point to really make the best use of that voice of yours, something that can make you stand out as an individual artist. I actually think your 80s style stuff might be the most authentic version of you, and it's quirky and memorable as a style.

You will however have to lose a couple of points here for stealing a lyric from Like A Virgin: "your heartbeat next to mine" :)
