Nicely done. That really rocks in a casually sinister way.
I also really really like your voice.

Need to catch up on the latest entries, but in the meantime here is my effort for the month. I cannibalised an old song, keeping the verse and re-writing the chorus and instrumental.

    Lyrics here.

Richard, this is really good. I live in Athens, GA and your tune could win 10 rounds with the sound that made this town famous. Yours really is dream pop. I also dig those elements of Marc Bolan in your voice. Sweetly passionate.
P.S. Sometimes cannibalism is a good thing.

  • @perestroika Nice atmosphere in this track, I like the detuning, makes everything sound a quite weird. You say it's unfinished, and I guess it does feel that way: it's a bit short and lacking a real sense of journey or evolution. The sounds are great though.

  • @Snekula some weird and atmospheric sounds, but not much variety or evolution to keep me interested over the course of four minutes, it would have been nice to hear something more happening in the piece.

  • @orchardman Love the guitar playing here, a bit more muscular and gritty than your usual. Nice breakdown in the middle to give a change of pace.

I like the lyrics as well, and the overall theme of the song - the imagery works very nicely and evokes just the right amount of melancholy.

  • @richardyot

Pretty cool song, let down by technical issues somewhat. The drums are too subdued and repetitive, the voice a bit too loud and a tad tremulous , the bass sound doesn't follow the chords that well in places (I know that's a subjective one), the solo too off-key.
It sounds like I'm being a bit of a meanie here, but as I said, I do like the song. I feel (again !) that I'm swimming against the tide here with any kind of constructive criticism, so I think this will be my last bout of such.

  • @Igneous1 Thanks - to be honest I appreciate criticism, but I agree that it often feels a little unpleasant to be dishing it out. But from my own perspective I find it useful, because the criticism often highlights issues that I missed (it's easy to be blind to your own failings or to miss details in your own work).

My attitude to creation is that the work is more important than my own feelings towards it, so if someone can point out ways to improve the work then I'm grateful. It's about trying to improve the end result rather than giving each other an ego boost. I have a very thick skin anyway, and am very aware of the fact that there is always room for improvement. So criticise away :)

  • Thanks for your reply Richard. I think (if done fairly), recieving helpful criticism (even if we agree with it or not) can be something of a 'nag' to try to address things in future.

I'm old enough to have done a lot of stuff on 4 tracks and the like that never saw the light of day (and that was probably a good thing, in hindsight !), I wouldn't really have wanted to put that stuff 'out there' for feedback, but we live in different times now.

I had a Tascam 4 track in the early to mid nineties, and I have to say that I don't miss it, or most of the recordings I did on it personally. I did however record a demo for a friend, just him and an acoustic guitar, that was so good that I played it for my own pleasure for years afterwards. Then eventually, around the year 2000, my last working cassette deck broke and I never got to hear those songs again...

But going back to feedback, I think there are many reasons why people make music or any kind of art, but it's usually either for one's own private enjoyment, or to communicate something. If you just want to have fun then feedback is not really that important, but if you have something you want to say then you do need to know whether you are saying it effectively or not - I think that's when feedback is helpful: does your music move people in the way you intended, or do you still need to work at it.

  • Hi,

Let me break the rules of one song per month limitation but holidays period is giving me some time and I do really feel curious to get some feedback on this song purely made on Ipad.

    Girl from Mars

Well I met her in a bar
She said she was from Mars
    They planned to kill
    All humankind

Yeah well, I know I should have warned,
But hey you know that girl
    Was hot as hell
Sure you'd have done the same

    Laser thunders shined the skies
    I only watched her eyes
I'm gonna die wearing my best smile

    Radiation filled the air
    like my love for her
    My girl from Mars ,
She was worth every fucking dead.

Funny and sad as it could be.
She got a kind of flu
    unknown to her,
    the aliens died next day.

At last mum she was right
"you are lonely on your own" (she said)
    That fucking flu ,
It took my Girl from Mars.

    Laser thunders shined the skies
    I only watched her eyes
I'm gonna die wearing my best smile

    Radiation filled the air
    like my love for her
    My girl from Mars ,
She was worth every fucking dead.

    My Girl of Mars (x2)

  • @trackedout that's a much more chilled-our song than your previous efforts, and I like the more laid-back feel and the fact that your voice is easier to hear and follow. The guitars remind me a bit of Pavement circa Crooked Rain (a compliment in my book).

I love the meandering bass line, it's not so much a walking bassline as one that goes around the block and then into the woods for a stroll...

Your voice is great and I love the songwriting and feel of this one - please keep posting them.

  • I'll be away for the next 10 days or so, and I still have a bunch of reviews to write but I will do my best to get the remainder in when I get back. In the meantime @JohnnyGoodyear is in charge - don't let the power go to his head.

  • GAZE UPON THE IMMENSITY OF ME MY PEOPLE AND BRING ME SOFT TITHES ALSO BY WAY OF MOIST CAKE OBJECTS AND THE LABOR OF YOUR AS YET UNBROKEN CHILDREN.

    Erm. Safe travels Boss.

  • You're in safe hands, people.

  • Gulp!........

Man, I gotta say it's a good set of submissions this month, and I'm loving the variety of styles covered by this group. It's about midnight here so I gotta sleep but I'll swing back around shortly and offer my thoughts on 'em gladly. Here is my submission for the month, though...I finally got married on 7/30 to my love of the past 10 years and wrote this for her...as it surely feels like I've been waiting all my life to be this happy. Hope you enjoy!

Edit: Forgot to mention it was made in Gadget, exported to Auria to record Steel Guitar tracks and finally polished a bit in Audio Mastering...so pure iPad joy. ;)

We will be rudderless when you both have a week off from the 10th of September! I've heard that the caves in Croatia are particularly suitable for a hideaway after a Derby demolition ;)

What....no lines this month? Have a nice one gaffer. :)

Good luck Corporal Goodyear. Just polishing me boots & then ready to rejoin the parade.

    Left, right, left, right.......

Really like the vibe of this one. Reminds me of aussie band The Cruel Sea...not the same sounds, but same sort of vibe. Also, reckon this tune would translate really well live ...which sadly is a tough ask for many of us ios dudes who spend most of our time playing with ourselves

I've got a couple of CD's (remember them  ?) from The Church hiding in a box somewhere that jump to mind when listening to star crossed. Great job on the atmospheric production & jangly guitars. Nice job on vox too...i was listening thinking a female vocal to accompany yours might really suit the song...doesnt 'need' it but might add a sonic twist. Great job & well worth a listen.

Big fan of the guitar playing and tone, thought it drives the song nicely. Also liked the narrative in the vocal which made me want to keep listening. i found the drums a little distracting in places as they pulled me out of the song a bit...completely subjective but i reckon more of a groove / simple fills approach with the drums might have added a bit and made the vox and guitars stand out more. Nice job tho, was fun to listen to.

    Hey dudes,

Here's a track I finished a couple of weeks ago! I like to try different stuff as those of you who know me know.On this occasion I was trying to write a club track! :# It came out a bit 90's maybe?? I leant quite heavily on "sessionband deep house" for the drums and bass but I added the strings and the piano & turned it into a song.Im obviously not David Guetta, but I did have fun attempting it! :p The lyrics are no pot of gold but I'm happy enough with them.I wish I knew some more tricks to use on the vocals but I exhausted my skill set.Still any advice, feedback is more than welcome. :) If anyone fancies trying a remix, that would be cool.Any,I hope you like it.

Dude, really catchy tune. Agree with richard that going for a super hi-fi production value might take the catchiness up even further...songs in this genre tend to sound so beautiful that your ears want to jizz themselves  the dude at the recording revolution talks about sweetening - quite useful for enhancing / adding variety to verse / chorus progressions, & reckon this type of aproach might be worth considering / pushing in your mix. But as it is, really great job

    This is a true story.

    Going Home

    I was in the desert
    Saw a plane come down
    Small fighter jet
    From a small base town

    Deep into Nevada
    Sand and razor wire
    Thinking that the man
    Would surely take it higher

    Nothing I was shouting
    Stopped the fall and crash
    All became as fire
    And then became as ash

    Wednesday I remember
    Just before three
Kids in the car were crying
    Just the same as me

Later on we caught a movie
But the watching felt like shame
    In some silent way
We were none of us the same

    Going home, going home
    However far it is
    You go alone

Mesmerising tune that dragged me right in. Really liked the build and slow burn...would love the build to push a bit harder to crescendo...some call & response background vocals, maybe some sparse guitar notes with delay, jangling hard left then right across the stereo field in time with beat as the notes fade. Theres lots of room in the mix so might slot in really easy. Alternative might be the odd really startling forceful drum beat with a bit of echo. But greart tune (and artwork) already, so take suggestions with a grain of salt.

  • Dudes, my ode to Don & Hillary, "Get Trumped". Went for a chearleader intro followed by pumping, boxing match vibe. My first crack at SOTMC. Vox are a bit sssibilant as i went for the most up front vox i could conjure...note i didnt say 'singing'! Had alot of fun making this one. A buddy helped me out with artwork and i reckon he absolutely nailed it. Hope you enjoy it.

    Hi,

Good job! The production itself is very good and I like the mixing of the song. The style of the song reminds me a little the rap style of the mid 80's. Maybe the only con is that the tone of the song remains allways with the same riff having little variation but good anyway!

guess I'll start the festivities... Back to Gadget for me after a couple of GB submissions the past few months.

I set out wanting to make a more ambient track with some cold, digital synths & a little bit of an industrial edge with some gritty tones & textures.. As I worked on it, I upped the tempo a bit & the track took on a bit more of a dark, digital groove. The icing on the cake was finding an awesome NASA radio transmission from a mission where the pilots started hearing strange music being broadcast on their radio frequency. I used 2 bits from that - the sample in the beginning of track says "Well that sure is weird music". The 2nd sample in the breakdown later says "That music even sounds outer spacey doesn't it? You hear that? That whooshing sound?". The song had me feeling/thinking about space - so this fit perfectly! This is one of those tracks I was just happy to finish finally and when I was done thought it turned out ok - but then I listened in the car afterwards over a few days and the track grew on me more and more. So I'm very happy with this one. Hope you guys enjoy it too. All made with Gadget, with one imported drum loop I had sitting around from somewhere. I used AudioMastering after to do a little tweaking.

I liked the overall feel and the production. The opening had a sort of Massive Attack vibe to it. Ultimately though i thought it was bit one paced, I kept waiting for some big climax at the end, some sort of guitar and keyboard break but it just fizzled out.

@LostBoy85 George Michael eat your heart out. Where's my Wham t-shirt. Great vocal, good production (although for me the bass at the start was a tad too high in the mix) and a nice song. Please go back to making proper music :) :)

My contribution of this month , a melacholic tone. This was made with Garage band pre IOS times. Now with the band we play ,uch more rockier but still like the rainy tone still the original version has IMHO.

@AlexB great song. I wasn't sure about your vocals to start but as the song went on I thought they fitted the song well. Production wise I thought you need to pair it back it bit on the chorus. It just felt a bit much, maybe try panning the instrumentation a bit more. Overall though I liked it a lot.

That's my entry for this month. Enjoy!

@theconnactic great stuff, my favourite of yours by far. Love the the lead guitar tone, those high notes at the 1:49 mark are amazing. My only complaint is that I wanted the fast lead break to go on for a lot longer. It would be great to hear more of your acoustic playing in future as well.

@JohnnyGoodyear I liked this a lot. Had a sort of an Eels vibe to it. I particularly liked the refrain and the end and I thought the harmonies were great.
