    This is a true story.

    Going Home

    I was in the desert
    Saw a plane come down
    Small fighter jet
    From a small base town

    Deep into Nevada
    Sand and razor wire
    Thinking that the man
    Would surely take it higher

    Nothing I was shouting
    Stopped the fall and crash
    All became as fire
    And then became as ash

    Wednesday I remember
    Just before three
Kids in the car were crying
    Just the same as me

Later on we caught a movie
But the watching felt like shame
    In some silent way
We were none of us the same

    Going home, going home
    However far it is
    You go alone

@JohnnyGoodyear I liked this a lot. Had a sort of an Eels vibe to it. I particularly liked the refrain and the end and I thought the harmonies were great.

To my (continuing) shame, Eels I have heard of but not actually heard, but will wander off and see what I can learn :) Thanks!

My contribution of this month , a melacholic tone. This was made with Garage band pre IOS times. Now with the band we play ,uch more rockier but still like the rainy tone still the original version has IMHO.

@AlexB great song. I wasn't sure about your vocals to start but as the song went on I thought they fitted the song well. Production wise I thought you need to pair it back it bit on the chorus. It just felt a bit much, maybe try panning the instrumentation a bit more. Overall though I liked it a lot.

Thanks, the mixing was a little bit a pain in the ass.it was the first time I was working with so many tracks ( only 10 coming from the Drum perfect pro, 22 in total) and did try to make it the best as possible but allways having that feeling that the mix is not perfect. Probably better work on the panning and better equeing would help. But anyway thanks for your comments!

@AlexB I chose to listen to this one of your two tracks submitted. Only because I saw your lyric sheet & "fucking" appeared twice. Shallow reason I know but....... Anyway, good, strong song sir. Got a Bowie feel to this....... I like & enjoyed your vocals. Silky & understated with a tone that is utterly natural. Lovely. Richard Hawley ish.

The very brief warm up at the start adds to the intro, especially when the hats kick in to brighten the snare beats. What are the drums please? Gorgeous guitar sound that cuts nicely through the pumping bass guitar. All adds up & you've created a really good pop tune. Keep em coming.

Hi thanks for the comments and great that you liked it. The drums were made with Drum Perfect pro and some crahes from Cubasis but as this was my first try with DPP I still didnt have fully under control. The app is huge but takes some time to master it.

The apps I used for this song:
    Drums : Drum Perfect Pro
    Guitars: Ampkit
Synths: Magellan ( 2 different synths)
    Bass: Korg Gadget Madrid
    DAW: Cubasis

    All the best

My apologies, I thought you were talking about the second song (Girl from Mars) , my comments were reffered to that song.

  • @marliess Bloody hell there's some terrific tunes out this month. Wow!

This is another one. Good gear. I can't even listen to the words yet because that riff is all over me like some sort of wonderful sound rash. If The Knack had written My Sherona while necking fish tank cleaner, this would still smash it to bits. The riff is good & reminds me of them. Make it even heavier, more stodgy in my book but it is pumping now. The break is sexy....tick, tick, tick......very apt. Like the ooowoo's at 2.30. Provides an even sharper edge to cut with. Nice. Top vocals, clear & delivered professionally. Enjoyed this. Congrats.

Looking forward to hearing what you decide to pull from your musical ballot box next month. "Ken Doll" maybe. Quick listen. Good as well. :)

@studs1966 Brilliant mate. Fair play, you can do that remix thing alright. The reggae/dub taste is delicious. The sax is stunning with all the echoes & effects. Samples work very well. Like that fleeting sound at 4.11. Professional sounding, quality. Groovy & infectious.

For a short time you transported me to Negril beach & everything that is part of that 8 miles. Could hear this pumping from the beach PA as we all complete the water aerobics session. Remember to douse the spliff first. ;) Nice.

Thanks for the great reveiw. I have done quite a few, but I'm only allowed to release one at a time, a month. Respect. ;)

  • Tried to create a dance track. hahahahahahahahaha! Surely this time. It must be cos good old Wendy from the W.I. actually moved a finger to this one. Never happened before. Good sign. That she offered me some of her prize pecan pie only cemented the "thumbs up" she gave. She is getting on a bit so the ears don't get the full audible mess!

Where as Lostboys dancing track this month is charismatic, classy club.........this isn't. More drums without the bass. More slab of concrete than illuminated disco dance floor. I wheeled out Cyclops to try again. Impossible to tame with my very, very limited synth exposure but i love it. Mental bugger. I was getting the shakes after no guitarism for 2 months so a small bit at the end. Even i have standards to keep up......yeah, i know .....LOW ;)

    @Bluepunk Stranger danger anthem!

You are the bastard love-child of Pam Ayres and Aleister Crowley and I claim my five pounds.

Seriously, I think you need your own radio show (or is that a podcast series these days?). And I absolutely love the pistols guitar at the end :)

Hahahaha. Brilliant. My old man loved Pam.

Thelema. Every man and every woman is a star. Love is the law, love under will.

Nothing as powerful could ever come from this foul mouth so I think it must be the drugs connection. Bloody genes! Didn't he used to enjoy a dabble at one point in his life as well! Pure gear, so I heard. ;)

Thanks for the Pistols comment. They're part of my DNA so I'm stuck for life. I feel privileged to have been injected at birth. Cheers Pam & Al. I owe ya. ;)

@jbvdb I cranked your tune right up because I'm a sucker for a baggy bass drum sound. Not only that though. I wanted to soak up all the goodness you're pumping out. That crunching beat propels your track up to urgent dance attention required. Good gear this. Sounds like you've found your way around town pretty quickly. Cerebral outro that haunts & teases.

There's another minute or so to fill yet as it cuts out early. Enough to shoehorn in some extra delights. Go on, please fill. Excellent.

    Thanks.
It was a silly loop taken a bit too far in gadget with added drums from both patterning and ielectribe.
Not sure I will be doing anything else with this one tbh.

First ideas done entirely on iOS, with cubasis.
Not really very good but hey I am finding my way through the windy road of figuring out the iPad thing. Not the best wok flow but enjoying it anyways.
I am planning on sampling lots of this and doing more to it.
    Cheers

@jbvdb it's not really my sort of music so I'm struggling to say anything constructive. Like a lot of the electronic instrumentals that people post on here it doesn't really go anywhere. Sorry man.

No worries, like I said it's the first thing I did entirely on iOS. I don't expect anyone to love it or anything!

    Hi, folks!

That's my entry for this month. Enjoy!

@theconnactic great stuff, my favourite of yours by far. Love the the lead guitar tone, those high notes at the 1:49 mark are amazing. My only complaint is that I wanted the fast lead break to go on for a lot longer. It would be great to hear more of your acoustic playing in future as well.

Thank you so much, @orchardman. By the way, four years ago, I used to update an Youtube channel i with my arrangements for solo acoustic guitar renditions of known standards: here it is: https://www.youtube.com/user/oneatheist

If you want to listen to one of these arrangements right away, here it goes:

    Hi Connatic,

Very inspiring! The whole song had a dramatic and sharp tone which I really liked. I like of course the lead guitars ( was it recorded with any amp simulator or directly recorded from a real amp?). The drums sound great even the eq seems perhaps on my taste I little bit too high on the higher frequencies ( but that's my taste). Also directly recorded or done with any app?

    Thanks for sharing! Great!

  • Catching up with the reviews:

@Halftone: nice intro, and the song itself would fit nicely in the soundtrack of a thriller movie. Some nice synth piano songs in there, and the mix is very balanced. Congrats!

@LostBoy85: this is another hit candidate of yours (although, I must say, "My Kingdom Come" remains unbeaten for me). Nice lyrics, nice vocal performance as usual, and a good, balanced mix. Keep it up!

@AlexB, nice ballad! It deserves more work for its drums track. Really loved the vocals: very distinctive tone. Liked the lyrics as well. Very good mix. The final piano/guitar chord could be left ringing a little longer in my opinion. Good job!

Thank you for the review, @AlexB: the guitars were made with a cheap Washburn guitar and Auria's built-in Overloud THM plug-in, which is frequently underrated. The question about the drums was in itself one of the biggest compliments I ever received here, since they passed as real drums for you, when in fact they were laboriously programmed in DrumPerfectPro. About the EQ, I love it bright, and I always reference my mixes against songs from Stevie Wonder's Innervisions (this time, Living for The City) to get my hiHats right and tight.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear: great lyrics as well. Liked the vocal performance and treatment as well. The instrumental arrangement is simple and very effective. Congratulations!

@igneous1: liked the piece, but it sounded indeed like something of a test. Some funny synth tones, and very good musical ideas here and there. Looking forward to listen this one expanded to a more developed song. Nice work!

@perestroika: very intriguing sketch: as with Igneous1's song for this month, I'm also looking forward to listen yours developed to a finished work. Keep going!

May I ask you how is your workflow with DPP? Do you prepare all patterns in DPP and then export them as wav the whole song to your DAW?

How do you make to sync that each pattern fits inthe right place in the song?

  • @Snekula: interesting piece, another one that could make good figure in a thriller movie's soundtrack. Liked the dynamics, and btw the video was very nice and appropriate. Congrats!

@fauxen, an ode to football: how creative! As a Brazilian, this has great appeal to me. Interesting work, and very difficult to classify: spoken words, perhaps? Great job!

@jbvdb, looking forward to listen to a more developed version of this song. There are some great musical ideas there!

  • @raindro, I really loved the intro. The song is a sketch, isn't it? Keep it up!

@richardyot, nice rhythm guitar tone, reminiscent of The Smiths best days. I'd mix the drums a little but higher. The vocals are mixed quite sensibly for the genre, blending with the instrumental without being buried by it. The noisy pad in the chorus was a nice choice. Dissonant solo, almost psychedelic. Good song!

@trackedout, great musical ideas, and a great bass line that would benefit hugely from some EQ and compression, and perhaps a little adjustment of the timing. The vocal performance was your best IMO, and the melodies are catchy and nice. I didn't understand why it ends so abruptly. There were some crackling and popping here and there, so it's always sensible to check your levels before bouncing. This, despite deserving more polishing, is a very good song. Congrats!

  • @JeffChasteen, I'll review only the longer one. I loved its guitar introduction: it has a 70's classic rock quality and tone that appeals very much to me. I keep expecting the song to begin at any time, when I realise the intro is the song. Fair enough, I enjoyed it nonetheless!

@oddSTAR: Great production work and top notch guitar sounds here. Congratulations for the song and marriage!

@marliess, hahahah... Very good "dissing". I laughed a lot. The production, arrangement and mixing worked all very well, and the "Get Trumped" line is very catchy. Congrats!

  • @Bluepunk, it definitely sounded more like indie rock than dance music, and very enjoyable indie rock btw. Good drums, remind me of Bloc Party. Good lyrics! Great job!

  • @orchardman said:
@fauxen sorry mate but I'm a rugby man myself. Would have liked the musical accompaniment to have been a bit loader in the mix but overall a nice quirky little number.

    Thanks mate!

@fauxen This is football. Tidy work indeed. Is this you on the vocals. Heard a sneaky MOTD line in a deep voice. Just getting my bearings here. Cleverly crafted tune this is. To get all those words & rhymes to fit must have been a challenge. Passed that with flying blue colours. Well bloody done. Got all the relevant things down.....well, all the above ground, legal stuff anyway. ;)

What language/accent are those players gassing on in at the end. Can't quite make it out. At first I thought it was American but then I asked myself why would you combine Football (soccer) with America........ouch! ;) Your team is?

Thanks for the feedback! It isn't me on the vocals, just my partner for the assessment - we had to record each others dialogue.
I do hope I attributed the correct Creative Commons things down. Still a bit new and there was loads of extra samples I didn't include in the final mix.
The last section's audio is the sample from freesound.org user 'klankbeeld' of training at 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. I'm Australian too, so football is always competing with the rugbys, cricket, and Aussie Rules. My local team is Brisbane Roar, but I love watching the NWSL and follow our Matilda's very passionately.

Thanks for the info. Have started to take an interest in what's going on in Football land in your neck of the woods. Of course with The City Groups investment in Melbourne City, it won't be long until the whole football world turns sky blue ;) On saying that, the scousers over here are all buzzing pending the rumoured Chinese takeover. Calm down Jamie Carragher......calm down! Good luck to the Roar this coming season. With Mr Cahill now in the ranks, Melbourne should score plenty. :)

Not everyone's happy with FFA partially bankrolling Cahill's move to Melb City. FFA have changed marquee rules in order for signing him, but league as a whole is struggling. aaaaannnnnyyyywayyyyy.......

  • Was offline for a few days & checked in to find this thread lit up with activity! Thanks to AlexB, orchardman, Bluepunk & the theconnactic for having a listen to 'trump'...geez, you guys said nicer things about it than my wife! As a SOTMC noob, gotta say how impressive the spirit of collegiality is in the thread. After leaving some feedback for a few of this months tunes, i thought, 'geez, i hope i don't piss anyone off'. So it was nice to check in and get some feedback and also see my feedback taken as constructive. Hope to listen to a few more tunes this week.

Wondering whats the spark for you guys for writing / recording a new tune? For me there's a few diff sources. Sometime a riff or bass line has a real emotional undertow that you want to tap into, sometimes you wanna take the piss, & sometimes its just the stupid minutiae of life. My SOTMC song next month is about a driver who flipped me the bird when i gently tooted her whilst she was tapping on her phone instead of moving with the green light. She went nuts, and i thought 'fuck ya, I'm gonna write a song about ya...'

  • @Bluepunk,

Certainly one of the maddest (if not the maddest) things I've heard here. It made me laugh - in a good way !

Kind of reminds me of this classic:

"....it was the freshest move I've ever seen..."

  • @marliess said:

Love that. SOTMC as a revenge mechanism. Good therapy right there... :)

@Bluepunk loving the new musical direction especially when the guitar comes in at the end. As for the vocals, first I thought John Cooper Clarke but half way through "Ernie the fastest milkman in the west" came into my head and I'm still not sure why. :D :D
