Tried to create a dance track. hahahahahahahahaha! Surely this time. It must be cos good old Wendy from the W.I. actually moved a finger to this one. Never happened before. Good sign. That she offered me some of her prize pecan pie only cemented the "thumbs up" she gave. She is getting on a bit so the ears don't get the full audible mess!

Where as Lostboys dancing track this month is charismatic, classy club.........this isn't. More drums without the bass. More slab of concrete than illuminated disco dance floor. I wheeled out Cyclops to try again. Impossible to tame with my very, very limited synth exposure but i love it. Mental bugger. I was getting the shakes after no guitarism for 2 months so a small bit at the end. Even i have standards to keep up......yeah, i know .....LOW ;)

@Bluepunk loving the new musical direction especially when the guitar comes in at the end. As for the vocals, first I thought John Cooper Clarke but half way through "Ernie the fastest milkman in the west" came into my head and I'm still not sure why. :D :D

It's the accent. He slips into a little bit of west country/bristolian there for a second... :)

    @Bluepunk,

Certainly one of the maddest (if not the maddest) things I've heard here. It made me laugh - in a good way !

Kind of reminds me of this classic:

"....it was the freshest move I've ever seen..."

That it reminds you of ANYTHING musical is a Brucie bonus. Thank you. Glad it made you chuckle. Looking forward to hearing your time sig changes again. Very clever. :)

Thank you kindly. Not sure if this direction is sustainable.....or good for my, or any other poor listeners health! Fell out with Cyclops today. Hell of a domestic we had! Caught the mechanical menace puffing away on my last King Edward. The smoke! Everywhere. After he gave me the hiding of my life, I gave in. Ok......one more tune but I'm not tickling his Sub Bass preset anymore. It's really dark & scary in there........ Cheers.....especially JCC & Benny Hill........ones a God.

Accents. Well spotted Mr Goodyear. Can't believe you heard those words that slipped through. Some days (most days) I don't even know who I am let alone where I've been or come from!

Och aye the noo. See! ;)

  • @studs1966 hey man,I really love the original of this song, she's one of my faves.I like the direction that you took,it's a nice vibe and I like some of the tricks you did with the vocal. There are some timing/sync issues and it is too long for my taste but overall I enjoyed it and it's all about having fun right?

  • @raindro hi there,I enjoyed your tune, short and sweet, cool sounds. It always feels good to finish something eh? :) I like the synth that comes in around 1.00 the most,it made me think about my old sega master system and some old ninja game I used to play! :D

The end was a bit abrupt?
    Cheers
    Leo

  • @richardyot hey boss, interesting structure on this one v,c,musicy bit, bridge?,c. I like it! I remember the chorus melody from one of your previous songs,I kinda wanted you to go up a bit like you did on the original,as it is,for me,it loses interest a bit cos it's all on one level.(the chorus is what I'm talking about.) You know me though,I like my big Roxette choruses!!! :D Ive also done this trick of cannibalising old songs to make new ones.I think it's a great idea, especially if I'm feeling a bit stuck for inspiration.

So,yeah...not my fave of yours melodically, but,I do like the lyrics/structure and the singing!

@JeffChasteen, I'll review only the longer one. I loved its guitar introduction: it has a 70's classic rock quality and tone that appeals very much to me. I keep expecting the song to begin at any time, when I realise the intro is the song. Fair enough, I enjoyed it nonetheless!

Thank you for your kind words. Glad you liked it.
It really is just a long intro. Now, all I have to do is write a "Sweet Jane" to go on the end of it!

  • @Bluepunk said:
@orchardman Welcome back both. With lyrics like "I'm back to emptiness smoking in the rain," are you sure you didn't write this on your return from the Costa's? We need the sun again......time for an Orchardman tune. The intro flashed me back to Teenage Fanclub in the white room. Purity. Guitar solo is terrific. Like you poured a pint of ice cold Estrella over the strings & shouted AV IT SON! Contrasted by some lovely, calm keyboard playing from your wife. This adds some softness to complement her gorgeous vocal tone & delivery.

There's a couple of breath sucking snare drags at 1.10 & 4.12. Love them whether on purpose or not. Who's tub thumping on this? Is this slightly heavier feel going to lead you both to that promised land of Siouxsie & the Banshees? Another top tune from you both. :)

@Bluepunk thanks for the feedback I'm glad you enjoyed it. The drums is the guy with beard from GarageBand again. I was going for Drive by Truckers rather than Teenage Fanclub(I"ll have to check them out). I am slowly trying to get the missus to allow our sound to have a heavier feel so we might get to that Siouxsie song one day.

Thanks @LostBoy85. I know it's a bit long. I'm from the old school when I make Reggae/Dub. In the old days I listen to(& still do, as I have virtually every 12" Single) the Jamcian Label, "Greensleeves". Produced by Henry "Junjo" Lawes. I tried to get the Dub production similar to there Sound engineer, "the Scientist" from the 1980's. So it's 12" Reggae version. I think Mr @JohnnyGoodyear may know where I'm coming from? Lol....... Red Records in Brixton, & Dub Vendor in Clapham. :) I'm glad you like tho. ;)

    Sigh.

Red Records. Used to walk down that way to sign on. Funny where nostalgia lurks. And how sweet it can taste...

@JohnnyGoodyear Right up there with my favourite Truckers songs. If you like this check out Jason Isbells solo stuff especially his last 2 albums. We saw him play Bristol earlier in the year and it was one of the best gigs I have ever been to. Probably the main reason we are making the type music that we do at the moment.

    This is a true story.

    Going Home

    I was in the desert
    Saw a plane come down
    Small fighter jet
    From a small base town

    Deep into Nevada
    Sand and razor wire
    Thinking that the man
    Would surely take it higher

    Nothing I was shouting
    Stopped the fall and crash
    All became as fire
    And then became as ash

    Wednesday I remember
    Just before three
Kids in the car were crying
    Just the same as me

Later on we caught a movie
But the watching felt like shame
    In some silent way
We were none of us the same

    Going home, going home
    However far it is
    You go alone

@JohnnyGoodyear I liked this a lot. Had a sort of an Eels vibe to it. I particularly liked the refrain and the end and I thought the harmonies were great.

To my (continuing) shame, Eels I have heard of but not actually heard, but will wander off and see what I can learn :) Thanks!

Maybe start with this classic. Very interesting band. So was the lead singers father.

  • Have to agree, so many great Eels songs. The 'Useless Trinkets' album is probably a great place to start the journey.

  • @Bluepunk @Jocphone Thanks chaps. Used to hate my ignorance, until I realized how dull it would be to know about everything already...

By the by, I have always found (t)his notion "The many-worlds interpretation is an interpretation of quantum mechanics that asserts the objective reality of the universal wavefunction and denies the actuality of wavefunction collapse" very comforting.

Haha yes, very! The parallel universe aspect where Mark feels all his departed loved ones are there waiting. This way of thinking (from his dad) must have influenced his song writing. Some deep stuff. As @Jocphone summarises perfectly...."emotional intensity."

More Daevid Allen than RW, but I have got a squeaky voice.

So let's see: I'll write some existential lyrics with an overlay of end-of-the-pier cockney chatter, @Monzopro will do the music and backing vocals, @Bluepunk is on lead vocals, which I think leaves you Sir @Jocphone on mixing duties....sounds like a plan.

Yes, yes, yes. I'm in! But a little birdy has told me that Mr Joc can throw some harmonies out as well. So all in on the vox. All. If we need some angelic churchy vocals to contrast, my mums staying here in Wales for a week. Jerusalem dum dum! Got it down already.
