The biggest problem with Garageband is that if you want to separate your tracks you need to solo them one by one and send them out

Yes that is a bit of a drag, but it doesn't take that long to solo out the tracks and export them one-by-one. Stem export would be killer though.

Agreed. Never quite understood why they wouldn't allow the bundle/zip approach. Still hopeful they will. It is a terrific app, no question. I try to imagine if it just arrived as is from some unknown developer (let alone for free). Think folks would be pretty impressed....

It's Apple though, not some unknown developer. Which means we probably never will get stem export, because you can open the GB project up in Logic, so why would you possibly need to export stems? Walled gardens are where apples thrive, apparently.

  • Here is a quick-ish run through of some of the new features and stuff, I think this is great.

It's funny, the update is getting hammered over on Discchord.

Then a few weeks later I listened to that little demo project again and decided that riff could be turned into a song, just needed some words and a melody. This is what I ended up with, it's pretty much 90% GB, even the guitar solo was played on the virtual guitar in GB:

You illustrate the point I was trying to make far better than mere words on a forum.

The demo song sounds excellent to me. :) Equal in imagination and excecution to a live recording with real world instruments.

I am inspired to put in more effort, and hopefully do more than dabble with GB.

  • The constant snark over at Discchord gets old after a while.

  • Don’t think the update is actually being hammered at Discchord as such. Only the fact that it is IOS 11 only, and is therefore used to force people to upgrade. Which is true.

Yes you are right it is more about iOS11 and I'm guessing that it's probably true but this does make the update worthwhile for a lot of people and I suppose there are worse things they could have done to get you to update

Well said. So maybe I should get Logic. We'll see what that next update looks like soon, i'm sure.

Yes I agree. And the timing is not bad, just after the release of 11.1. Just took the plunge myself - and not because of the GB update. That was just a nice bonus...
    Thanks for demo, btw.

So much in there that it’s almost overwhelming. Add the new Model 15 AU...and it put me in virtual sugar coma. Still trying to recover enough to write some music!

I think the beat sequencer is one of the best in iOS. It's really easy to use.

What I was impressed by is the ease with which I could discover, access and understand every feature within the beat sequencer, without any instruction whatsoever. Making software intuitive is an art, and the Garageband devs are better than most in this area.

In this case, it means that I will likely return to this drum machine and use it often as there is zero mental friction involved, unlike some where no matter how many times I use them, a break of several months means relearning the interface which makes me less likely to open the thing in the first place.

I do wish it had an option to play pads, thus removing all math from my life, however momentary.

  • In general, Garageband iOS feels to me like hanging out on the couch with a good friend you've known forever; comfortable, relaxed and sure to generate some entertainment. Whereas with some other apps, it feels more like going to work; put on your best face, get in the right frame of mind, put up with some annoyances, etc.

Can you imagine a melodic sequencer built around this concept?

Wish they will open up the program to export like Beathawk do (Midi/Audio)..

Isn’t that what @brambos is building? I hope so

Well you can open the GB iOS project in GB Mac, too

  • Nice update. I mean it´s free. Also a nice update for the Logic remote app where i now can use soem of the Garage Band touch instrument as midi output to Logic instruments. Connected in a second without a cable and with surprising low latency via my network.
I can say what i want about Apple but they offer some great things about music and their things just work together.
(Try that with a windows and a smartphone).

Oh dude, I apologise for unintentionally hurting your feelings. By uninitiated I meant people who haven’t got a clue about working with DAWs, that’s all. I didn’t realise my comment was so broadly open to interpretation.

I find it very interesting that there is sometimes a perception that those trained to play a musical instrument have automatic superiority over those who are untrained. Today, those with sonic imagination have the tools - such as GB - and are able to flourish like never before.

I’ve heard works from trained musicians which are wonderful, but it is never a given. The same thing is true for those working with imagination and serendipity as their major skills. The lines have become blurred, and even those brand new to IOS music can knock out a decent tune almost immediately using GB. Then, all being well, encouraged by that, allowed into the world of music making - initiated if you wish - they can get other apps, learn DAW’s, etc. This is surely a good thing for music, and bringing people together.

I didn't for one second mean 'trained musicians', simply novices to digital music, which might include musicians trained to a highest grade.

I get your point though albeit there's amazing artists in both camps. Interestingly a very good friend of mine and a very good, trained drummer recently told me that ever since he's learned to read and write music, a part of his creative musicality has died.

Also, I think anyone, especially seasoned songwriters could benefit from GBs chord function. After a while it is very easy to fall into the usual few chords and stop going beyond. This is why GB and Novation Curcuit are a godsend to me among others.

  • This update is completely sick.. I’ve done more in 30mins of the new GB than in god knows how long with BM3 lol..

Drum patterns,, DJ FX... it’s fucking awesome.

  • It’s the little things in gb that make me happy like a timeline line when your are moving your loop around so your not guessing what bar your putting your loop at. One thing I like to do is duplicate and separate the drummer so I can channel each pattern the drummer is using so I can get rid of the drummer track so with the new drum seq it’s so much easier to duplicate.

Just wish they would of put some love into the sampler but bm3 can solve that for me with the file drag.

+1 for automation +100 for moving projects from logic with midi. I can only dream lol

The app store is showing me the new GB if I search for it, but just has open and not update on the button. Maybe it just needs time. I hope you can select more effects for the built-in guitar, it has always bugged me that there are lots of options for real guitar players but the built-in guitar has always had severely limited options.

Ok it’s letting me update now so I can check this for myself.

The update wouldn’t show up for me at first either, even when I rebooted my IPad Pro. Ending up having to drag down on the update screen to force it to search for new updates (which I didn’t know you could do before and found by trial & error). I guess I’ll have to start doing the force update check all the time now, lest I miss out on any others in the future.

  • I love the garageband update...more instruments are definitely in the chute!
For free, GB mobile gets pretty close to 3500.00 v-synth-gt articulative phrase synthesis!
I love the new smart instruments! Love the update to 24 bit! LOVE the possibility new alchemy sounds will be coming more frequenctly! Love that my garageband projects open up in Logic Pro X!

I think with the addition of more alchemy sounds, and import of alchemy user sounds...and some stem output...I'd be even more excited.
