I'm so torn on this one. The price seems mostly reasonable and I love pretty much all of Hainbach's creative work.

It's just that I have so many freakin' apps now. Most off of them are excellent in their own ways. I'm embarrassed to say that I don't think I could run out of creative audio play time if I never got another app for the rest of my life.

    And yet...

Is this one at least fun in a way that no other app is?

The app is a great drone source, combine with Monoke MPE control and Perforator for hours of fun.

How could you set Monoke to control Fundamental?

Match the scales in both apps or not. Send the MIDI out from Monoke to Fundamental. Press the different pads in Monoke. Look at the lower left corner of the screen shot for some MPE settings in fundamental.

  • Now I need to try mononoke too, cool.

Here’s my hot take, trying out a few presets with old friends Droneo and IVCS3 and a lorra lorra reverbs:

Bit of a head scratcher but in a good way, nice for drones.

Turn ‘trig‘ button on top right hand side on (yellow) to get noise out, there’s a sync to bpm button top left, the rest is all about dragging sliders around and seeing what happens. (Well, that’s the way I do it. If I knew anything about music theory and/or acoustic science, I’m sure I could do something a lot more considered, But, ah... I don’t :) )

No concessions have been made for IOS screen size so the rate sliders etc are small and fiddly, and you’ll have to full screen the AU to see all the controls. Try the presets - L & S, L for load, obvs, and you have to turn Trig on again after loading) with a huge reverb - I’m using Stratosphere Cloud Reverb and EOS (so far...) Wild!

Think it’ll slot in nice next to Droneo, Mononoke, and iVCS3.

  • totally unusable. falls into the audiodamage ui fail category.

  • @Charlesalbert will be checking it out later and reporting back, don't worry 😋

@dreamrobe : I feel your pain, but it definitely isn’t totally unusable, (I just used it, after all, on an iPad Air 2018, tweaking the rates and mix with my fat fingers on the sliders - it’s just fiddly).

Definitely would be assisted by pairing it with external controllers, and pretty much everything is addressable from AUM’s parameter list, so in lieu of the Sensei Morph I can’t afford yet, I expect as I go deeper with it to be using Art Kern’s MIDILFOs and Mononoke a lot. It’s definitely a Marmite app though - you’ll either love it or hate it, depending on what kind of noises you want to make. Me, I’m all over it like a cheap suit. :)

  • I love Marmite

I think that I need a @Gavinski tutorial👍 After 5 minutes of playing with it at least I was able to make it emit a sound😂

Your screenshot looks like you can sequence it?!? Play with AUMs onscreen midi keyboard?

    Presets for desktop
    https://www.sonic-lab.com/Fundamental/PresetBanks/

Does the iOS app not come with those presets?

  • edited August 2020

@Gavinski : yes, the IOS version comes with all those presets - arranged in four banks, top right of the screen, press the L button to open the bank window to access the individual presets.

    Nice!

  • I'm definitely going to be doing a bid on this, but it might take a few days. I haven't been able to do any betas due to a problem with my test flight. One thing I'm really going to be looking into is how well the mpe works on the seaboard. I'll be really interested to get feedback here from any mpe users about whether you think it is working well on your device or not. Cheers folks.

Wait, what? Which is the UI fail? Droneo or Fundamental?

  • I think he is referring to the fundamental UI which is clearly more suited to desktop use. @skiphunt

  • By the way, I asked Sinan from SonicLab about the mpe implementation and I will post his response here, it might help ppl who are using mpe controllers and clarify some things:

'It should work on any MPE controller, not just the Morph.

I have also a Seaboard Blocks, and the first tests have been made there. You have to see [sic - should be' set'? ] the appropriate MIDI keys, that’s all. All MPE press, Y and X components will work instantly.

On Morph you can assign the pads to anything, from simple CC’s to MPE dedicated messages. But the Seaboard is basically a keyboard.'

Truth be told... my beloved Dhalang MG is likely a bit more suited to desktop as well.

  • Both of these still look a lot more amenable to finger stabbing than something like Thesys 😋

  • My first impression of the screen, BTW, is that it's easy enough to slide things, seems fine to me.

  • Is there no manual? :D

  • edited August 2020

Can't see a way to connect bt midi in standalone. No help page in the app. No manual link on the website. Manual link listed on the app store blurb doesn't work...

  • Eh not for me

Is Dhalang still working for you? It doesn’t produce any sound anymore. No idea why. Contacted dev, no reply.

Yes. I hadn’t used it in awhile, but I just tried again to verify. Took me a few minutes to remember how it works, but it appears to still be working fine for me. However, I vaguely remember a period that it did stop working and I don’t recall any updates since then. I am running the latest iOS though. 13.6.1

  • Is this very cpu heavy?

Excellent. Working again here as well. Gracias and back on topic.

  • Here’s the Fundamental manual, link seems to be working now: : https://www.sonic-lab.com/Fundamental/Fundamental_manual.pdf

  • Can anyone check if this happens for you: when I select the ‘break me’ preset in standalone, the app crashes immediately (yup - appropriate name for this preset lol)

That preset works OK for me - the thing that's a little disappointing is that the standalone interface doesn't fill the whole screen on a 10.5" iPad Pro which makes the sliders and such like even smaller...

  • Agreed, I’m on an iPad Pro 12.9 so that is even more noticeable.
