Funny thing is if we all banned Subscriptions we’d be living in the dark with no water or heat/ac nor be able to get anywhere in life

Yeah, but it depends of the product. Utilities are different to consumer products. When I buy a bookcase or a kettle I don't want it to be sub.

I would get a sub to Logic but any other app? Not sure? AUM pehaps...

Yep. I was just trying to be provocative. Music for most of us is relative as well unless it’s our 24/7 bread and butter.

I’m just happy that we’ve finally arrived here. An amazing moment for this platform.

  • Yeah subscription haters are idiots.

I can’t wait for Logic Pro to switch their desktop payment model to subscription as well!

Pro Tools users are willing to shell-out $99 a month for it. There’s no way the good folk at Apple can ignore a sweet revenue stream like that!

    Sign me up! 🤓

  • I wonder how many Logic subs (& money) Apple expects to get each year?

    10,000 subscribers?

    100,000 ?

That's honestly not too bad. I was half expecting that they'd leave my M1 iPad Pro out in the cold. Now I just have to keep my mind occupied for the next two weeks. I guess I'll see how many projects I can get started in GB before then

I’m hopeful that apple will allow you to choose between buying or subscription eventually. If you think about it, they’d also get a lot of hate if they released it at $200. People were just complaining about pianoteq pricing even though it has desktop parity.
If we’re honest, a lot of people use iPads because it’s a more affordable computer, and this puts logic within reach of more people.
This is a way to release the product AND avoid serious sticker shock for people used to paying $1-5 for most apps and games.

A very small niche of people would be willing to shell out two bills for a pro ipad app.

My guess is that Apple is taking the opportunity to demonstrate to other "pro grade" app makers that a subscription model is viable on the iPadOS platform. Given that, I expect them to stick with it unless it turns out to be a giant failure in the market, and I don't think it will be.

Now back to my other pipe dream: C'mon Arturia! Let's get V Collection on iPad! Or at least Pigments and MiniFreak V!

Who knows... some of today's DAWs might not be around in 12 months time...

  • Amazing. I'm an Ableton (and Cubase) guy, but still ..

  • Assuming iPad only and not universal? Couldn’t see any mention of phones in the article.

  • I've never used a desktop DAW (apart from Cubase on an Atari when dinosaurs roamed the earth) so probably a dumb question but are folks expecting all the things we've been missing?

Tempo change, time signatures, proper audio and midi routing? Other things?

Of those, all but the Pro

  • Subscriptions ARE stupid, not the idiots who dislike them

I mean if they don’t offer a license, especially for current users, I guess I will have no choice but to subscribe

Still, huge news for Mac and iOS

Are you asking if they’ll offer this on iPhone? I think not. You do have GarageBand on iPhone, so those projects could graduate to iPad Pro and desktop eventually.

I'll stay with BitWig and Reaper, non-subscription 😅😅😅🤗🤗🤗

    iPad?
    No, thanks

Bitwig is subscription though. You pay per year to maintain updates.

I think we’re in total agreement that this is a fair pricing model, but you know as well as I do that subscriptions are tricky to discuss around here.

For those that are automatically dismissing this based on the subscription model: Bitwig and Loopy Pro operate more like a magazine subscription, where you keep what you have and only need to pay for new content. Apple seems to be going full software-as-a-service, where you aren’t paying for a product that you can keep; you’re paying for the value that the software brings you every month or year.

I’m a strong proponent of SaaS models for this type of app — the casual user can pay month-to-month and pause their subscription when something new and shiny comes out; the professional user can easily evaluate whether they’re getting enough value to justify the outlay. And at $50/year, it would take something like five years to meet the price of buying LPX up front (I haven’t checked recent prices or done the USD-CAD conversion but I paid $300 CAD for LPX in 2017ish).

And of course, I’m not trying to bully anyone that doesn’t like SaaS models — we’ve seen a lot of poor value propositions over the years. But this looks very promising and fair IMO.

Cubasis will still be the leading non-subscription DAW on offer. That might become their niche...

  • I knew it'd be subscription, but what I didn't know was how ridiculously cost effective it'd be. Here I was expecting $9.99/month USD. It's only $4.99/month? To those who complain, just mark it in your monthly or annual budget. I for one am glad I don't have to pay $100-$200 right off the bat. Phew! 🤣

And one month free to see if I like it. Welp sayanora Auxy Studio Pro.

Well, let’s see who can afford it.

I’d be damned if I find myself editing my multitrack logic sessions on 11” as opposed to 27” screen but if it’s affordable enough…

I’m not sure about that. Among existing iPad users, some, yes. I personally wouldn’t hesitate and I think many would be in the same boat. Logic Pro for a year for the cost of one Pianoteq instrument? No brained, and that’s not a diss on Pianoteq.

But the far bigger community is the new people it will draw in to the iPad ecosystem from desktop. I think tons of desktop people would happily pay a $50 sub a year for Logic Pro on an iPad. And then they will discover all the other great - and relatively cheap - iPad apps we have available.

This move will almost certainly also make many existing iPhone only iOS musicians upgrade to iPad, which I’m sure Apple will be happy about.

I still can’t believe how soon this is happening. Mad! Glad I didn’t put a bet on with anyone about Logic Pro arriving on iPad this year lol

  • Wow. Big news. I’m gonna read through this whole thread with interest, but by the looks of it everyone seems to be excited about Logic on iPad.
I’m the grinch here. I’m afraid about how it’s going to change the whole iOS app ecosystem, and I don’t think it’s going to be in a good way. As much as I’ve been wanting a “proper” daw on iOS I believe this is going to do more harm than good. Hope I’m wrong.

Something else occurred to me. With the latest iOS update you can use an external monitor by plugging in your iPad Pro. You’ll still be able to do your projects on desktop with this.

Can’t be done, my iMac is 2011 pre air play model. Still, another issue I think may be the device overheating and high power draw damaging the battery sooner but maybe I’m just being paranoid.

Good timing though as I just picked up a second hand pro 11 3rd gen.
