I’ve emailed @MoogMusicInc about plans for iPhone support, so will report back for anyone who cares.

Just a question of an old man , how do you do to use an iPhone to create music or work serious audio ?

Personally I can’t too smal for my eyes and my fingers. I use my iPhone to make calls , sms and take photos and mail that a lot 😂.

Asking serious brands make it fit for iPhone screen seems to me a challenge but if that can increase deeply their sales the new Moog management will do it but if it is just for some guys not useful to bother about your iPhone needs. That reality not a judgement.

I use Loopy Pro on iPhone and iPad. It’s obviously small on iPhone but you get used to it. If my auv3s work on both I can start a project on iPad, then airdrop it to iPhone and seamlessly continue where I left off, then airdrop back again. There’s workarounds like committing to audio but who needs workarounds ;)

Moog have always made all of their apps work beautifully on both devices (even model 15!) so I don’t think it’s a big ask. I totally respect their decision to switch to iPad only if that’s what’s happening, but it makes me less likely to buy Mariana personally.

Thanks to explain me. iPhone music is something new for me so interesting to know more even if for practical reasons , my age , fingers and eyes I can’t do that.

I didn’t know even Model 15 is on IPhone , my god it is for me so painful to use it even on an IPad screen. Model 15 is a very big GUI and was made for educational purposes first according to Moog.

Moog is under a new management as you know so nobody know what are their plan. To outsource hardware and software? I hope no as a Moog lover.

Yeah we’ll see what happens. I’m shocked we’ve had such an incredible app like Mariana out of the blue under the current circumstances tbh.

Your hunch is right though - iPhone sales are shown to be far lower than iPad sales, to the point that a lot of devs don’t/have stopped bothering to support it. I like to remind them that just because someone buys on iPad, doesn’t mean they don’t use on iPhone too. I do think I’m in a fairly small minority though - definitely not enough of us to make a decent business case.

Isn’t the idea of a fully airdroppable powerhouse production studio in your pocket alluring though? 😉

Surely no reason to be shocked? Mariana will presumably have been in development long before the current circumstances.

I’ve read reviews on Mariana, talking about it as the ‘first release from Moog under inmusic’ almost implying inmusic will have played a significant role in it. Technically, chronologically, it is the first release but it surely can’t be taken as any sort of indicator of the direction of travel Moog will take under inmusic - it’s what will be developed from scratch going forward which will tell us that.

We had the same thinking , I was very surprised too to have a new major Moog synth under such circumstances but before under the same management we got the full Moog Fx Bundle but not a new synth.

For young people I understand perfectly how it can be powerful to start on iPhone and to finish on an IPad or even desktop. For Middle Ages and older not easy to do but for younger it is more a natural way.

Seems to me that Apple focus more and more on the high end desktop pro market and incredibly powerful new IPad even affordable IPad Air to come in 2024. Music audio is just a niche market compared to video and graphics or 3D for Apple.

Now I can’t see what to propose really more than what you get in an IPhone 15 ?

Smartphone innovation so new sales is at an end or pause even not sure that smartphones so iPhone will still exist in in the future in the next 5 to 10 years coming except for older people a bit like the one using basic Nokia style just to make a call or send sms.

10 years time is like 100 years in actual tech.

You are right , certainly in the pipeline even before the new management and the new management was very keen to release it. And it is too early to know as I told the future of Moog as a hardware or software maker. But for this synth this is a Moog quality.

After messing around with Mariana for a while I'm kinda surprised that there seems to be no way to use the oscillators as 'modulation sources' (like one oscillator from the 'other' synth).

So no way to do the 'Model D' thing and use OSC3 for audio-rate modulation...
The LFO speed can be scared up past 50Hz by using keyboard-tracking and the 'scale' function.

Only LFO's, Envelopes etc. can be used as CV outputs, no Note CV or Gate CV out, as far as I know oscillators should also qualify as CV signals?

Also I do find it a quite weird omission that there's no Arpeggiator/Step-Sequencer built-in.

Over all it's a nice synth and relatively straight forward to tweak.

    Cheers!

If 250 Hz LFO from 103S is not enough for 😎, then try with VCO from 107S, it starts at 25 Hz. Just keep ENV and FM at zero and switch sync to off.

I know, the tricky part is to send Note/Keyboard CV to both of them from Mariana :sunglasses:
Being able to 'side-chain pipe-in' audio as a modulation source would be pretty neat too.

I appreciate your audio knowledge. Hope new updates in Mariana from Moog

  • Sounds rubbish. Honestly, given how good the pedals are, this thing stinks. Reminds me of vsts from 15 or 20 years back. Very plastic, no weight, the resonance is of course very polite because it’s a moot, the effects are decidedly average.

  • Great, great synth. But very sensitive dials, jumps quickly to the modulation menu when tweaking :#

Oh, darn, it was a failed attempt to make you happy! 😅

Is there a particular reason why you want a Mariana internal note / keyboard CV to control anything? You can always insert the FAC Envolver and use the signal from the Mariana to MIDI modulate whatever is needed. Or use the dRambo keyboard to send MIDI to Mariana and CV to something else.

    No worries :sunglasses:

What I was after was to do 'Analog FM' (On a Moog Model D the 3rd oscillator can be used as a modulation source).
In order to keep the FM somewhat in tune the keyboard CV from Mariana could have been handy to control the frequency of the 'Mooger Foogers'.

Does anyone know if we can add text to the note section that opens when accessing presets?
The only way I was able to get the keyboard up was to press the + sign on top left but then it goes into Init mode.
I’d like to make notes for the preset I’m using as it applies to the song I’m using it on.
    Thanks for any responses.

Plus sign on top left? Do you have a screenshot of that by any chance? Or maybe you're referring to the desktop version, because the auv3 doesn't seem to have a + sign anywhere on the UI, sadly.

If you tap the preset name at the very top of the UI a section will open on the right with preset info. Just above “preset name” on the top left is a + sign. iPad version.
I’m wondering now if that is for developer notes only and can’t be changed.

Ah, sorry, I totally misunderstood - I was looking for a way to access a keyboard as in midi keyboard - you’re talking about access to the iPad keyboard for typing, got you.

Has anyone managed to get another Moog AUv3 keyboard to send midi correctly to this one? I tried just now with sending from Animoog Z AUv3 and I got it working, but once I switched my Mariana settings to Duophonic for that patch, I was not able to get normal behaviour when using the Animoog Z keyboard to trigger. I need to play around more, it, tbh, this shouldn’t even be necessary.

@MoogMusicInc do you guys have any workaround to suggest to us? Could we please just get a keyboard option added to the Mariana AUv3? With an expressive instrument like this, it is genuinely really problematic not to have a keyboard in the AUv3, as most hosts do not have a suitable keyboard for AUv3 playing. Love the app but this omission is bothering me a lot. A separate keyboard app that can be loaded as a midi AUv3 and moved freely around the screen, including on top of other apps, would be most useful.

The AU lacks the standalone’s kb? That makes no sense. The Animoog kb is the best thing about the moog apps.

There are 2 synths in one in Mariana, so there are also 2 Glide knobs, 1 in each synth engine, so you can set separate amounts for each, so that is not a problem at all, it’s better that way, in this case

  • Finally jumped on this after being on the fence for a while. Stellar piece of software. Just as I thought I was done getting new apps this year 💀

I wholeheartedly agree with @Gavinski and others re: built-in keyboard. It’s such an expressive play surface that will be very tricky to replicate in other hosts. There’s also no recording function in the standalone app to get around it….

It’s a horrible omission, no question. Probably a good thing for people to request - if enough people express their frustration at that omission, it might get added in an update.

I’m not suggesting it’s an acceptable workaround because it’s not at all practical, but you can set it up to use the keyboard in the standalone as the MIDI source to control the AU version in your host!

  • Love this synth, but it sends my ipad pro 2017 to the limit, so it's more suited to newer devices....

  • Just came here to say that I think Moog was especially generous with the factory presets. Well I create my own patches, I like demoing presets to see what a synth is capable of.

Agreed. I may even end up using some of the factory presets because they’re so good. Maybe with a few minor tweaks.

At least some of them were done by Lisa Bella Donna (according to her IG) hence the quality.

This makes 🌊 LOW Tones by Tonebooster/Cyclop my #2/3in ios, guessing i instabroke my app fast for this, your correct Foogers benefit, i enjoy these, insane modulated bass , check 😂
😊 the higher CV resolution (try cutoff sweep slow) is cool plus a added iap can summons a Melange Spice worm on Arakkis. "Muab Deeb" yes it is a deep bass that warms the soul's sensibility and with the apropos name! Soulumesence inducing when instanciating cymatic r3sonance under water 💧 Wow 🤩

Haha, are you saying there is a preset called Muab Deep inside an IAP pack? I didn't see any iap preset of that name, what's the actual name of the patch?

Definitely one of the best things about the Moog synths is the quality of the presets, whether IAP or factory . Staggeringly good, usually.

engine, Bob Lives! A krellish nirvana attained with nerdy precision, imo sonic superiority in the space isn't clear, much developers work i appreciate and actually bought 😂 to suppose satire is accurate hyperbole that is apparently a weapon of moog mass production 😉
*appreciated your videos are A very insightful bunch of work, in great courses can students grow wiser.

  • Yeah some nice presets in there :)

Ah! She’s excellent! I know she’s worked with Moog a fair bit so that definitely makes sense.

  • Will Moog Mariana do C64-Style Chip Arpeggios?

Yes but it's quite tricky to keep them in tune (~8% per semitone) and no way on the iPad (unless using a mouse?) to type in LFO speed manually.

More often than not when I try to modulate a dial it jumps to the modulation section, is it me? As far as I know there’s nothing wrong with my fingers..
