MidiStep - Aleatoric Step Sequencer by 4 Pockets (Released)

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/midistep/id6680182647

MidiStep is a powerful and inspirational polyphonic step sequencer, and a dream for lovers of complex rhythms and generative music creation tools. The program uses sophisticated, user-controlled randomization to generate notes and chords with a variety of parameters, including note values, note length, chords, patterns, velocity, gate, dividers, repeats, swing, and many more.

You have complete control over what, when, and how much is randomized on a step-by-step basis. You can easily create patterns that have little to no variation, patterns that maintain a recognizable pattern but have some degree of variations to the notes, velocity, etc., all the way to patterns with extreme randomness with every pass - the degree of randomization is completely under your control for every parameter and for every step of a pattern.

  • Wow! Thanks…

  • wow this looks perfect. how soon?

  • New video out today. Can’t wait to try it.

  • Fun, like Quantum but AU. Also looks like PolyBud a bit.

  • It's like Thesys for humans :)

  • Looks amazing!

  • Looks like another of Paul’s apps I’ll have to buy!

It's amazing how he can pump out a new app every few months with so many features and ideas packed in. His stuff is stable out of the gate and well maintained. Truly a brilliant developer!

  • I’m looking forward to this Mr. Paul

  • Don’t get it. Why is Aleatoric (aka random) good, but AI bad?

Because he reuses all the graphic elements and probably a lot of the code - seems like a good plan to me.

  • I love the MIDI drag and drop feature. Great for getting your sequences into another app. It will be very interesting to see how this works with input from chord generators like Scaler 2, ChordJam and ChordBud 2.

  • I always thought Stepic by Devicemeister - https://devicemeister.com - would be great on iPad. Well, here it is.

Take my money! It looks amazing. Is there a slide feature? Also, does it only have forward direction or does it also have random, pendulum, or other pattern direction modes? It looks nice, but not sure about the chrome 3d knobs. Flatten it down.

  • Was waiting on a MidiSTEPs update.. Seems it will be a brand new MidiStep…
    Neon, why these common names?

    Thanks..

I think Paul's Neon came out before the other recent Neon sequencer, right? But yeah, Midistep is a poor choice of name given there is already the almost identically named Art Kerns sequencer midiSTEPs on iOS, definitely.

I agree..It should have a better and fresher name.

For me AI has two core problems:

    • an AI system uses data = creative works from third parties as training data. This is often from people who have not consented to this use of their material.
    • The use of AI to fake artworks or even worse news.

In most cases these are AI related problems that cannot be observed in purely algorithmic or random systems.

  • Love the enthusiasm for its release, dude seems really cool and can’t wait to create with it

I did not see any 'performance features' (Looper, Gate, etc.) in the video.
Skip, Reset, etc. (from MidiSteps) could be nice also..

Should work well with iBassist’s Chord Output…

  • is it soon yet? 😏

  • Looks fantastic . (I think one of the best devs on iOS/mac…)

  • This looks incredible! Can't wait for it to drop.

One thing I'd love love is 'trigger condition' a la Octachron - to be able to have a note/chord play only on bar X out of 2/3/4 has been game changing for me to quickly write interesting patterns even before going to song mode.

  • When is this coming?

Paul said yesterday, “I’m guessing early next week, if all goes well”. (YouTube)

  • anybody heard anymore on this one? is it still on track for early next week! i’m really pumped for this one

Looks amazing…I’m definitely up for this……I have to say that Paul really knows how to pack in flexible features without sacrificing simplicity/usability.

Hoping for good transpose functionality and draw mode for faders.

Looks like a winner though with the UI showing most important important things at a glance.

Should be perfect partner for Art Kerns sequencers … MIDIdreams especially as it seems to follow a similar pattern based approach. Slightly ironic since Art also makes a MIDI sequencer app called ….MIDISteps.
    Anyway, looking forward to this!

    4pockets for president!

I don't understand why 4Pockets would use the same name for an iOS midi sequencer? This is a pretty small community so it doesn't sit right with me. It's probably unintentional and too late to change but it's a bit of a shame IMO.

Great, one more sleep... and maybe one more look at the video. It may be one of 4Pocket's best... Amazing.

    Thanks.
