…there is a set of video companion guides which (as of today) includes all of the videos #1 - #7 for MidiStep.

Thanks for doing this! Really well laid out. Amazingly helpful.

    +1 👍

    Updated..

    Thanks..

  • I swear this is a clown fart synthesizer disguised as a comprehensive/feature rich midi note step sequencer.

    MidiStep Lab..

The Loopy Pro ‘Snapshots’ is interesting..

  • It's a challenge to keep up with all of the features that keep being added.

  • What an awesome update! Thanks again Paul!

I seriously didn’t realize how deep Helium was, and it’s made me a super huge fan of Pauls apps because they all carry that signature. dude is a deep thinker and it shows in his wares.

  • MidiStep is amazing. Combined with Helium it is phenomenal. Not to say it was impossible before, but now I finally feel I have a great workflow with a combination of tools that I can use to finish full tracks in AUM.

  • Most likely a very stupid question, but how does one save the key with a pattern?

  • edited December 2024

From the hamburger menu (top left), Save Preset saves the state of the plugin including scale and key, which can subsequently be reloaded with Load Preset.

If you save MidiStep as part of an AU host session, its settings will be recalled when the saved session is reloaded.

Love how you can save ‘Key and Scale’ with presets.. you can just change the key and scale in other projects (with another key and, or scale) and it fits … add some variations, etc..

Can we get some preset sharing in here?

One of the best for 2024..

    Thanks..

Thanks @GRiker although I meant per pattern rather than project. So for instance patterns 1-8 could be in C and then you could switch to F at pattern 9.

Does MidiStep have other direction modes than forward and random? If not, a pendulum would be nice. It's an amazing sequencer! So much love and dedication went into it that I couldn't resist not buying it. Thanks

The most direct way to accomplish this is to assign a Chromatic scale, giving you complete control in each pattern. You can then assign any chord at any step.

You also have the option of disabling the Apply Scale button which allows you to select chord notes outside the scale, but it still has the same 7 scale notes options for the tonic notes at each step.

Another option is to incrementally add one or more notes to your initial scale by customizing the scale. Long press the Scale button until the Scale Editor displays, then add additional notes to customize the scale, adding to the available tonic notes at each step.

Really appreciate your tips and tricks here @GRiker. What I would like though is an easy way to do a simple key change while keeping the scale. I am guessing the Key option is global. I really think the ability to store Key information per pattern would be super useful when creating a sequence of patterns.

  • Didn’t one of the latest videos cover exactly this? Pattern key switch, where the pattern key make the step notes relative to that key.

  • … swipe down on Key button and select pattern key. It is in masterclass 6.

@bleep you’re a gem! I’ve watched a bunch of the videos and this thing is so deep I’ve forgotten half the things I learned :) Will watch/re-watch that video and have a play today. Thanks again!

For anyone else interested, it was covered in MasterClass 4 -

    Now to change some keys!

  • Oh, good correction. Actually, I based my masterclass 6 answer on the companion docs you can read to refresh your memory about all the details in these videos:
    https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/63003/updated-4pockets-rough-guide-video-companion-docs-and-more/p1?new=1

@EdZAB looks like your links to MC #4 and #6 are identical, the link to 6 needs a fix.

@bleep - Thanks for the notification. The link has been corrected.

  • Oh goodness I completely forgotten your docs @EdZAB. Downloading now. Thanks so much for all the effort there, makes it so much easier for reference than having to resort to the videos.

  • Would it be fair/unfair to say that MidiStep is quite similar in functionality to StepPolyArp?

  • This is now on sale so if you're prevaricating now's the time.

    https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3977106845903253&id=1704410769839550

Just picked it up. Looks deep but worth spending the time to get to grips with it

Nope, it's more like Quantum sequencer as an AU.

Ah right, thanks. I'll probably get it, but was just thinking (weirdly) "do I need it?" :D

    No, you don't need it.

Will it make you create musical compositions much more quickly? Yes.

Is there one other app that does everything that midisteps does or more? No. It is unique in that regard, however I would always push someone toward StepBud if the concern was pricing, but MidiStep cannot be beat in terms of the sale price/functions. - all of Paul's shit is absurdly deep and well thought out.

Ah, cool, thanks. Already have Helium and StepBud. Had forgotten about the "Buds", have a bunch of them I notice, but will get MidiStep then.

Otherwise I am currently exploring what I can/can't do in Logic Pro as I notice the issues I had with Auria Pro, which I was using last time I was around, still kind of exist (as it hasn't been updated "for real" in a looooong time now).

  • One thing I wanted to check about MidiStep. If you generate an interesting sequence, can you shift or scroll it to change the starting position like you can in Riffer? It's one of Riffer's best features so I wondered if you can do if in Midistep. So, for example, the 5th note becomes the first note and notes 1 to 4 move to the end?

Yep, you can do that. Long press on the random jump button to see the rotation controls
