😂👍🏻😂
I'll happily take your wording over mine, it's a better description. 👍
Appalling.
You should report it to the EU immediately...
I think we’re all guilty of not paying attention to what we say sometimes. Yes, the terminology could have been better, but hopefully there’s a learning experience now that it has been pointed out.
Well, batting it aside with jokes is certainly one way of dealing with male entitlement. 🙂
I don't know about you, of course, but I keep discovering stuff that I internalised through my life and never thought twice about them, but on closer inspection I now realise it's probably time to become a bit better, personally 🤷
Fair enough.
I don't feel the need to correct people on every slight non-PC thing they might utter.
I fully agree with this last sentence.
That’s true and I certainly don’t either but I also think there’s nothing wrong with pointing it out. It’s fine to joke about and know it’s a joke but also helps to reflect on yourself and things you’ve internalized, so it doesn’t become more than a joke.
Being made aware of the exclusionary way that many of us use to express ourselves is a way that we can become better and more considerate. Calling things “PC” and “woke” strike me as something people do to avoid accepting that we can do better.
Exposing the woke does make the world better.
Generalizing all attempts to become better people with one word is not going to make the world a better place. I agree that jumping on all minor infractions and publicly punishing all peccadilloes is not helpful either.
We would probably all do better if we looked for the middle ground and started having more dialog. The term ‘woke’ isn’t really helpful, as it pretty much immediately evokes responses that divide people.
I think this thread has run its course… I started it to share some info 6 months ago, not expecting it to be resurrected and turned into a melange of dev-bashing, celeb necro-humour and casual male entitlement.
I don’t mind the Viz jokes though… I’m very proud of the two letters of mine that Viz has published.
Why are we going to pay more? Most of my audiodamage plugs are unpredictable in both Logic and in beatmaker3 so I’m confused about this. I really don’t care what you charge…if the plug is a must have and if it KEEPS WORKING we are good here.
Hahaha, props! 😂
Agreed. I keep seeing “go woke go broke” everywhere and it’s doing my head in.
Yes, you hear & see it a lot. I think it is like the old rule that "for every action there is an opposite reaction". The companies that "go woke" get the support from the left but also get grief from the right. That is to be expected.
The saying I keep hearing repeated over and over is "diversity is our strength" .
I read a news article the other day where someone said "words are bullets". My reaction was to laugh and think "tell that to people in Ukraine. Or people shot in the daily shootings in US cities".
Yeah that's over the top. But perhaps a better analogy could be that words can be triggers - to someone else's gun. Or sparks that can set everything on fire. Those analogies would be valid, I think.
Can you post them here so we can see which ones?
Uh, of course. Really?
If you said," I'd love to have sex with (insert some name)," should I ask if you were talking about rape? That's similar to the question you are asking me here, and I find it odd that this would be the first thing that occurs to you.
Plus you're wondering if the hypothetical "cutie" would have any say in the imaginary 10-year relationship with me. Do you know a lot of people in 10-year relationships, where one person had no say in the matter?
I generally give my words enough consideration that they are not susceptible to being undermined by half-baked "gotcha" questions intended to illustrate the questioners greater moral standing. In fact, since you are trying to make an ethical point, know that I studied ethics when I got my undergrad philosophy degree at UC Berkeley, and it almost certainly is going to take more effort than you put forth to catch me in an error or self-contradiction. So I invite you to take another try.
I'm not upset or offended, by the way. I love to argue. I don't think this is the place for that kind of argument, though. Do you?
@erbin
If this casual misogyny you’re referencing is something you’re attributing to me, I am left with several questions about your prejudices and assumptions. If it’s not directed at me, you can skip the rest
Let’s start with my first q.
You seem to be assuming that the cutie down the street I hypothetically describe is a woman. Am I right? Why this assumption? Certainly without it, a charge of misogyny against me is not supported by evidence, right?
I won’t pepper you with the other questions yet, I’ll just wait on your answer to this one which I assume won’t be forthcoming in any defensible or coherent form.
Your turn.
I appreciate your response.
Yeah, the only offens I thought someone might legitimately take is if the developer read here that his app may be dead or dying, words I should’ve put in scare quotes.
My actual take is that any app that works at all is not dead, and all apps like all living things are dying. It’s just a question of when that process is complete.
@Gavinsky
Too tacky? Does the girlfriend in a coma you’d eagerly diddle agree with that assessment?
Words can start fires, figuratively speaking. So can finding fault with someone else’s statement only after you’ve added necessary details and assumptions that are entirely of your own creation, don’t you think?
Words can figuratively start fires. Especially when those words consist of assumptions you've added to someone else's statement in order to find fault with it, don't you think? It's poor argumentation/comprehension at best, bad faith communication at worst.
Let the battle comnense! I'm a philosophy grad too, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this debate develops. Well spotted about Ervin's casual assumption that you must surely be straight! They schooled you well!
(Calls Ervin to the Headteacher's office - nearly said headmaster there but managed to catch myself in time - grabs popcorn)
@gavinski Well, bi at least.
I would love to have a good old philosophy back-and-forth. Maybe not here, as they generally devolve into what appears to outsiders either nonsense or wankery. (Maybe in the 2023 App Sales thread, which apparently has no restrictions, and that's just a joke.)
Plus, presumably as a fellow philosophy student, you also understand the difference between an argument and a fight. Not everyone appreciates that distinction.
(I can't think of a real point of disagreement we've had that would be adequate for the exercise of our obviously mighty powers of ratiocination, but one can be found if needed!)
@edit: I see you weren't offering yourself as a combatant. Boohoo...
Ah damn, you got me again with the bi thing. In fairness it is very late here and really time for bed. Well spotted once again!
So appalling that no one should wait for the slow wheels of EU justice to catch up with a criminal like me.
I must be stopped by direct vigilante force before my words can be misrepresented again. Until then, there's no telling how much harm a wildly contorted version of my opinions might cause.
You’re in fine fettle today - have you just been rewatching the Uncle Monty scene from Withnail and I? 😛
That’s one I haven’t thought of for a long time. I haven’t seen that movie since it came out. Didn’t the same guy make How to Get a Head in Advertising? I’d watch that one again.
