What about family members?
Absolutely. If the update was adding features or new modules for existing users I would have swallowed this a lot easier. The fact that this is a “change for change sake” ikMultimedia CS version update really is irritating. Every time they’ve done this CS version overhaul the app in question has shit the bed. Amplitube and Syntronik both had similar problems.
I don’t know who these CS versions are aimed at anyway; I mean if you’re serious about iPadOS music production and a large plug-in suite is released you’re most likely going to buy the full version or not bother. I’m going to download a 350MB app just to use the one compressor that’s operable in CS? No, I’m either buying it or I’m not using it. I’d wager that’s what most of iOS musicians/producers would…of there’s always an exception…but he’s wrong.
@ikmultimedia restored my access after emailing my App Store receipt. 🤩
how did that work?
Submit a Support ticket with IK via their web site and tell them that you’ve been locked out of your Purchases and that the Restore function doesn’t work. And then wait for their reply and follow their instructions.
Seems like they’re patching the issue on their end until they can get an AppStore fix which is probably a new Update to resolve the Bug they introduced on Monday with the Update that caused all of this.
Hope that helps clarify things.
Cheers 👊🏼™️
I’m interested how they will resolve this for people who haven’t updated yet as well. I don’t think they can restore the full app because other people have now purchased the free version.
Quite the drama! 😅
Considering that the IAP came with 1.3.0 it’s should be relatively easy to check the version of the initially purchased app?
I do feel the biggest hurdle here is to make or force Apple to register a ’fake’ IAP for everyone who purchased a version prior to 1.3.0 which would allow the restore process to work.
Don’t know how many promo-codes are allowed in a certain time-period but I guess it’s limited so they can’t just e-mail one to every single person who bought the app.
Another method is naturally to check which version the user initially registred with IK or if the user has even registered it since registration is not mandatoty and If the version is pre 1.3.0 then unlock if not do the IAP circkus.
This is not an easy nut to solve, technically yes but byrocratically no…
Thinking about ow many versions of Amplitube there and how confused I am about what I've actually paid for, 2 apps, one free with IAP and one, full price seems the easy way. That is unless here comes the supposedly never to arrive avalanche of IAP add ons which is possibly what is on the way.
You can’t blame a developer for wanting to sell stuff.
There are so many threads on this forum that discuss why iOS audio is unsustainable for so many developers. Having one of the big established desktop developers on iOS can’t be a bad thing can it? The way some of these threads are going you have to wonder if IK multimedia will end up thinking iOS just isn’t worth the hassle.
IK have a very easy to predict business model. They release a lot of new stuff and charge a fairly high price when new. This new stuff then eventually gets packed into a bundle with loads of their older products and becomes quite a good deal. They then have fairly frequent and predictable sales where you can buy all their older stuff for a really good price and then they rinse and repeat. The New stuff usually gets released very soon after a big sale encourages lots of new customers.
That’s not a bad business model.
Complaining that a company that exists to sell stuff wants to sell you stuff if just plain asinine. You might not like the way they do it, but we all know it’s a hard business.
If you look at the various things IK multimedia have done on iOS you can see that they’ve been trying different things and different methods of selling apps to see what works best. They’ve not just dumped iOS completely when something didn’t stick but they’ve tried another way. This results in lots of moaning and complaining but I like to think they’ve been gradually testing the waters and refining their iOS business model to make sure it is sustainable.
I wish Arturia had persevered with iOS in the same way; they seemed to just give up after the initial burst of releases. I’d love to see more Arturia synths and for them to port their fx to iOS. Looks pretty unlikely.
IK have made mistakes along the way but I’m personally still glad they’re here and releasing cool software for iOS. Mixbox is one of their best products on desktop and it’s great to have it on iPad.
This current saga is obviously a pain in the arse for everybody that fell fowl of the big in the app update but they seem to be trying hard to fix things and have a temporary solution for those of you that already updated.
I also like the new promotion where you can get free iPad software with their hardware. So many hardware products come with loads of desktop apps but nothing of real value for iOS. This new system where you can unlock full features in a free app via their website is a cool development and I’d be happy for other’s to follow suit.
It’s good marketing. I’d be far more tempted to buy say an irig if I got a version of AmpliTube or mixbox for iOS included with it.
So yeah. Rant all you like but don’t then complain if we end up chasing away another developer from iOS. IK probably need us less than we need them. :-/
We definitely need to let them know when they do things we don’t like, but we don’t need to cross the line and make accusations and be generally insulting.
In the past though the CS version was released as a different app, that’s what they did with Syntronik.
Releasing the CS version, with a whole new IAP model, as an update to the existing app was playing with fire, there is just so much scope for error and confusion if you change the purchase model with an app that’s been out for months.
I totally agree. Does anyone know when this might be fixed?
Thanks to the support @IK_Multimedia .I emailed yesterday and today Mixbox is fully operating again.
Quite a few musicians I know would happily just pay for a few of the compressors at $9.99. Let's not forget the normal price of MixBox, not the BF promotional price.
The folk the frequent the AB forum are power users that are aware that most of the big-ticket items are discounted a number of times each year and are prepared to wait for those discounts in many cases. But we're a small proportion of all music app users. As @richardyot said, having both a CS version and a normal version would have ensured this recent problem wouldn't have occurred in the first place (much like with Syntronik and Syntronik CS).
A separate issue is that IK needs to better communicate what CS actually means. I personally answered this question at least 5 times on forums I frequent recently. The whole Custom Shop product offering makes far more sense on the desktop because the fully stacked versions of Amplitude, Syntronik, T-Racks etc are a major investment to purchase at full price. Some folk prefer to first purchase a few key modules, and then have the option to upgrade to the full product at some later date (with a promotional discount).
I prefer there to be just one app. I’ve had a few apps where there were two or more versions and it gets confusing knowing which one to keep as the canonical version.
It would obviously have been better had it been like this from the start but hey. iOS. I’m not surprised that IK have tried different ways of making things stick in iOS.
Free with IAP to unlock full version seems like a good way to me. And at least the free version of Mixbox has some useful modules.
Not to say this hasn’t been a shit-show, but it’s only a plugin. Keep calm and carry on up the Khyber.
Believe it or not but I have auto-updates disabled.
The reason I decided to update MixBox CS was that I had some stability issues and the new update promised 'General reliability improvements' and never even imagined an update could generally mess things up the way this did
(I've never in my 10+ years of using iOS experienced this kind of 'mess' with an update).
Yeah, bring on the pop-corn, this will be fun ride to follow...
Maybe releasing a separate free+IAPs app would have been a better way, just maybe..
that makes more sense, I think overall the free + IAP is a better strategy. The big problem is the painful (and unresolved) migration for the current users.
I am back in business. People, convert your negative energy into sending a request to IKM Helpdesk to restore your product. I got the response within less than half a day. Mistakes happen, RELAX!
Do your saved projects with MixBox load fine with the plugin, please?
Update allows you to restore purchases to standalone but its not reflected in auv3. Why submit an update to apple store if this is still broken?
Mine works fine in standalone but all Cubasis projects saved before the update are broken
New update:
As you may have noticed, we released a version 1.3.1 update. We can confirm that this unlocks all gear correctly in the standalone version of the app. However, you may experience locked gear in AUv3. We’re working on another version update that aims to address this issue and plan to release ASAP.
For now, if you wish to get everything unlocked, you may still contact our support team who have been assisting users in restoring their purchase and all custom presets.
We do not recommend reinstalling (by removing and downloading) the app, as you will lose your presets. If you're currently on version 1.2.0 or earlier, you do not need to update and we can recommend staying on that version for now.
Thank you.
And to the more philosophical posts in this thread, the update was actually to accommodate giving users the choice of either the desktop or iPad version of MixBox free with hardware purchases like in a current promotion and generally be able to do so going forward. The stars, though, did NOT align even though everything worked well in TestFlight and we're working to make sure we get you all sorted and thank you for your patience while we do so.
What about existing users of whom saved projects seem no longer work after your ‘personalised fix’?
Will this issue be addressed?
Of course any issues were being addressed and are now fixed with a new update.
Here is the official announcement:
We’ve resolved an issue that started on MixBox CS v1.3.0 where ownership of the previous app version (v1.2.0 and earlier) was not correctly unlocking the “upgrade to full” in-app purchase, therefore not restoring the full app, AUv3 instances, nor custom presets.
We’re happy to report that this issue is resolved with MixBox CS v1.3.2. Please update to this latest version to restore your purchases and all presets. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience in resolving this issue.
At this point I’m not sure if you are ignoring reports, misunderstanding the problem or mitigating public disaster...
I guess good job and thanks for your efforts!
PS: I love you too, a little less every day but still
Thanks!
What does it come free with? Do hardware purchases come with a code to activate IAP?
How can you give it away for free when it is already free. Wouldn't the only way to give it away for free have been to keep it the way it was and give users a code when they purchase X hardware? Sorry but I just don't see why this had to be done to "give" it away for free.
You’re right. That’s a logic fail on their part.
It’s not a Logic fail.
What they’ve done is make mixbix free with an unlock available for the full version
If you buy any of their hardware over €99 you can go to their website and unlock the full version. You get a choice of either the desktop or iOS version of mixbox.
The interesting thing here is that it unlocks the full version outside of the AppStore. You register the app inside the app itself and then it appears within your account page on their website.
They’ve used a similar mechanism to sync AmpliTube apps on iOS I think, so you can get all your IAPs in one app even if you bought them across multiple apps.
they need to do it this way to be able to give away iOS apps as it’s not practical otherwise and it also Keeps the giveaway with the same account as the hardware purchase.
It’s a clever way of getting around AppStore restrictions if you think about it.
The fallout-fiasco obviously not so clever.
