not about money, more about owning a product forever rather than having it on loan.

Most of the time it's a distinction without a difference, but when you buy e.g. Ableton Live Suite, you don't "own" the software, you own a license to use the software (which can be revoked for whatever reasons they cite in the EULA).

You can resell your Ableton license.

Ableton Live Suite isn’t on iOS, last time I looked.

Well, maybe, if recent predictions around 3rd party app distribution on iOS come true. Of course, license transferability is not a guaranteed feature of perpetually-licensed software.

  • One side benefit of having a multitrillion dollar company release an app is that they have way more coding resources, intimate knowledge of the O/S and it is much more likely to become abandonware. Worth the minimal subscription fee IMHO. Many of us "own" apps which have not been updated in years.

Nothing wrong with this subscription based model.

Absolutely everything is wrong on subscription.

I assume/hope that it will be free for the MacOS Logic Pro owners?!

Don’t think so, it that would be the case they would already communicate it.

I’m generally anti-subscription, but this is a rare case where I’m going to strongly disagree. For the price, it represents a huge value and competitive advantage.

For me it is not that much about particular price (even through imagining i pay 500€ to apple for 10 years of using it isn’t completely pleasant) - i simply don’t pay subscription for apps. I pay subscription for services (github copilot, netflix, amazon, hosting for my website) but not for apps. I want own app, not rent. I would easily pay 200€ for LPX on iPad and then anorher 100 for eveey major update once per year or two - but i own app.

Subscription is for me absolute showstopper.

Dendy, you don’t have to “rent” Logic Pro to iPad…
When you stay in the past we others will having fuckin’ great & fun time using Logic Pro - hold in mind, it’s the full fledged Logic Pro, so, 50 bucks a year is nothing to complain against…

Hell no! Go to hell, Apple!

    I hate subscription, but
50$/ years is better than a 1 time 500$ fees. Not sure what would be the 1 time cost of LP.

I didn 't think this would ever happen. I'm so happy to be wrong.

I'm actually more excited about FCP, I use it on desktop, but I like an iPad for working with images and videos. Luma Fusion is great but I like the results I get with FCP.

I'm curious to find out which Logic instruments and effects will be included in the iPad version. I'm excited to see what it will be like and find out the specs.

All of them. They're all being included. You don't lose anything by using the iPad Pro version, reportedly.

Anyone worried about not owning apps probably best read the terms and conditions in the App Store, there’s a reason they’re cheaper…

All software is licensed. This is not new. The difference is the subscription model versus a one-time payment for use of the software. But you don't really "own" your software anyway. You cannot repackage and sell hundreds of copies of your personal copy without risking getting arrested or sued.

$5 a month? I think they're being more than reasonable.

I guess I understand what you mean now, it was a reply about "desktop software".

My confusion was not understanding what that has to do with any software that is sold on iOS, much less Logic for iPad? There is no scenario with any software on iOS that you can resell it. So all dev's, if they are going to play in this playground, are in the same boat.

  • Can we stop being Debbie downers about subscriptions and talk about what features LP has that we haven’t seen on iOS yet?

Tempo tracks? Time sig changes mid song? Stuff like that?

The mind boggles. A person will have all the firepower of a full-fledged studio at hand wherever they go now. It's just amazing.

  • Damn I’m gonna need a new iPad. What I’m really happy about is all the fodder the iOS YouTubers now have with this announcement. Should be solid for at least a couple months

Even just to finally have a great true physical modeling synth on iOS - Sculpture - it is so worth it for me.

Now, now… Should we put Sculpture above all the other Physical Modelling synths, from Pianoteq to GeoShred? ;-)

I do agree that it’ll be great to have access to the exact same first-party “instruments” on macOS and iPadOS. Plugin versions cause significant issues in roundtripping projects between platforms, even when the same plugins are available on both. The way Korg solved this for Gadget is… interesting. Many people are unsatisfied and I haven’t heard of many people doing much with Gadget for desktop.
I get to wonder about the potential side-effects of having so many useful modules inside a crossplatform DAW (with no availability for these modules as plugins). Many of us expect major players to release more AUv3 plugins. It’s also possible that some niche players will refrain from releasing on iPadOS because of Apple’s competition.

At any rate, I do welcome the news.
(Yes, I’m among the people who find subscription models problematic, especially with “subscription fatigue” and high inflation rates across the board. Still, I’ll probably pay for the Logic Pro subscription because, unlike many other subscriptions I’ve had, it’ll bring enough value to justify the expense. Sculpture isn’t my go-to Logic synth. Alchemy would be closer. Overall, though, it’ll be about trying new “workflows”.)

I've only begun to scrape the surface of Sculpture and find it loaded with possibilities. It's such a great piece of software.

The opposition to subscription model seems to be rather visceral.

£50 a year is nothing if you’re really using and benefitting from software. Be it commercially or as a hobby. I only accept this as a valid moaning point if coming from a geographically disadvantageous position.

Otherwise, I really think it’s a bargain and shows lack of understanding of how much work, creatively and otherwise, it is to piece together such a monster of software.

It would be very interesting to find out what people would be prepared to pay upfront for this.
